The law of attraction

Do you believe in it? Has it helped your life in anyway by trying to put it into practise? I read the book a few years ago and have been thinking about it. Interested to hear views or 'testimonies'.

Edit: I have been going through a really hard time of late and I guess im trying to find comfort where I can.

It works, but not at the toxic positivity level of The Secret.
Ive had some incredible results from it, but a lot of it is mindset, connection and being open
This is Mumsnet though so lots of people will be along to tell you it’s a load of shit

Ooh I am so interested. Can you please tell me some of your results

Grapewrath · 12/07/2025 20:02

It’s not something I want to share on Mumsnet as it’s very specific (a lot of it) and outing. There are lots of success stories around though if you search :)

@NotEsther I will take a look at those podcasts. Have you had any success with manifestation? Obviously out with the depression and anxiety, which is amazing by the way x

I have, I’ve had a few holidays out of the blue, no cost to me, which were real trips of a lifetime.
I get loads of synchronicities.
I don’t focus on anything money related, as there are too many hang ups there, but my outlook on life is totally different, certain relationships have changed hugely, which was very welcome.
I was always very logical and science based, didn’t believe in anything like this at all, but got to a make or break stage and had nothing to lose. I also have weird energy things going on which has led me in a completely new and woo-woo direction.

Ok cool dont say what it was, but i can ask you the technique you used.

Did you just spend time visualising yourself having something.

And then it happened?

I hope The Secret book is better than the film.

Not sure if it's still on, but I watched it as it was on Netflix. Totally laughable, why for example would you get a cheque in the post by manifesting it, when you're not due any 'out of the blue' or 'surprise' payments at all.

When I was feeling low, alone and wanted to meet someone, I tried to manifest someone and wrote down etc what i wanted in a partner. Didn't meet a single person, let alone a potential partner.

Vision board though - I've never done that. Has anyone else? I could just imagine creating one then DC or a visitor to the house asking what on earth is that? And having to explain it.

The Secret is awful! Film or book.

I think you have to become an energetic match for what you want- which can be hard when you feel low. Lots of people sit in poverty feeling shit and try and manifest wealth, or from an awful job trying to manifest a better one. You have to take aligned action to raise your vibe from a’woo’ perspective but also to take small actual steps yourself and not expect everything to land in your lap.
examples- if you want a nose job, instead of obsessing over how much you hate yourself, know that when you do get the nose job you need to heal and be the best version of yourself. Concentrate on getting good sleep, taking care of your skin with spf and eating well so you are ready for the surgery. Shit example but yanno.
If you want a new job, don’t think about how much you want it because your currrebt job is shit. Be the best you can in your current job, to prepare yourself for the employee you want to be. Be organised, hard working and concentrate on what you do like about what you do.
The key is to think about what you do want, not what you don’t and to improve your life right now, as though you have all of your desires. It will improve your outcomes and in the short term, your life as it is

I absolutely hate my job. Its too much responsibility. But i have to give three months notice and i feel a bit trapped.

What should i do loa wise. Should i visualise myself in a new job?

Learning to meditate helps.
It calms your brain, helps to raise your frequency, increases mindfulness.

When you’re in the habit of meditating 15/20 minutes a day you can start to introduce visualisations - I write my own with a few self-hypnosis steps. When visualising immerse yourself into it like you’re really there (or have whatever it is), and remember how that feels.
Repeat the meditation a few times a week, try to recreate the feeling throughout the day.

You can also practice gratitude - I have a journal app for it, I take photos of things that have made me happy, write down good things, reframe bad things so I can think about what they’ve taught me rather than wallowing in the crap.

Learn to control your reactions - things that usually make you flare up with anger, learn to accept them, being angry and stressed isn’t going to change anything and could negatively affect the outcome.

Basically live your life seeing the good in things, feeling love, knowing that no matter what you are getting through it.

Do things that make you feel good, as much as you can. When you’re inspired to do something, do it (I find this really difficult!).

Sorry, I know you didn’t ask me, but I’m on a roll 😬

Focus on what you enjoy about the job, even if it’s something like “I enjoy the drive to work” or “I love X colleague, we always have a laugh”.

Focus on the things at your new fictional work that you’ll love, feel them as if they’re happening now.

Don’t allow yourself to think all the rubbish things about work, even if you have a list of good things to distract you from the bad stuff.

See how you get on.

leakycauldron · 12/07/2025 20:31

I've listened to an Abraham hicks, I find Esther's voice very calming and listen to one of her you tube affirmation videos most mornings.

As previous poster says it's not about writing a wish list and then expecting it all to be delivered as if it's a Christmas list,

So for me, I worked in the financial industry. Hated it. But had been working in it since I was 19 and no experience doing anything else. Plus to start over in anything would mean a pay cut which we couldn't afford.

I knew I wanted to do something in graphic design/ marketing. So I started doing courses , only short ones, but ones where I learnt how to use Adobe etc. I was made redundant and had time and money to do a slightly longer more involved course. Ended up back in the financial industry only to be laid off again.
Round this time DD was starting school and I wanted something to work around that but again still thought I didn't have skills to get a marketing/graphic design job.
But then something came up which I thought I have nothing to lose, so applied. Got an interview.
Was rejected.
A week or two later they called back and offered it to me as the other person had pulled out. I've now been there two years.

It didn't happen over night, but if you'd said to me 2.5 years ago I would be working in this field I would've laughed! I may never believed it would happen but I kept doing the odd course to gain the skills in the belief it would happen one day.
LOA teaches you not to ask how it will happen but to have belief it can happen and you deserve it.

I was just about to ask you that question actually, so maybe i attracted the answer :)

So instead of thinking
I hate my boss
I hate one of my colleagues
I hate working 6 days some weeks
I hate having too much responsibilty working alone

Because that will make me more miserable

I should try and think some Positive things about my current job.

Like
I like one colleague i work with
I am getting paid

Etc. Try to think more positively about my current job?

Yes exactly!
Build up the story about how much you love xyz and ignore the rest.

Disclaimer: not if you’re in a toxic or dangerous environment. In abusive situations the priority should always be to leave. In a tolerable situation learning to love yourself within that environment can open doors you’ve never even thought of!

Let me know if you need any help on the meditation front - feel free to pm me.

What’s the thinking about say, the people of Gaza? Are they just not manifesting hard enough?

NotEsther · 12/07/2025 20:46

Focusing on the bad stuff feels like a very human thing to do, and I know I spent my life doing just that - overthinking things that had gone wrong, creating scenarios in my head, preparing for the worst all the time and telling myself I was being a realist, when actually I was torturing myself.

I’m not a natural optimist, but I work on it, and I am so much happier for it. I expect things to work out, if they don’t I look for the lesson and move on quickly.

Dont wait for people to rescue you, or for a situation to happen so you can feel ok. Learn to create the feelings then the rest tends to follow.

This goes into far more spiritual stuff than is appropriate for MN I think, and can get into real clashes of belief.

The LOA I’ve come to follow never says that people have brought this stuff on themselves, or those who are raped, are ill, or have accidents. It’s more about the individual and how you manage your own life, but doesn’t stop you having compassion and doing what you can to help others. I know that’s a really inadequate answer though when it comes to atrocities and people living tragic lives.

They have to stop voting for terrorists and forget their hatred for the Jews and try and live in peace with them. That’s manifestation too.

If you buy into the popular version of "the law of attraction" you have to accept that things like cancer, rape and being involved in war or natural disaster are your own doing, that you have "attracted" it. (Rhonda Byrne writes this in the original book "The Secret". It's a dangerous psychological game to play with yourself.

I have had odd incidences of things turning up when I most needed them, but I'm damn sure I didn't attract widowhood, and an absolutely relentless string of hard luck over the last few years.

It's used alot in MLMs to avoid the fact that if the business model doesn't work for you, it's not the economy or anything else. Oh no, it's because no matter how hard you try, you're not vibrating hard enough and you are a failure.

The low level fun stuff is all well and good, but be aware that it can mess with your head big time. Just my two cents worth, based on experience.

As a fellow widow I thank you for making this point.

I’d work out what sort of job I needed, what skills I’d need to get it, and then make sure I was looking every day for opportunities to hone and demonstrate those skills in my current job.

While doing that I’d be looking on LinkedIn etc for jobs that matched my needs and wants, maybe connecting to people linked with those roles to find those opportunities. I’d reflect every night how I’ve got closer to my goal of a new job, remember 3 months was no time at all, and try to negotiate an earlier leaving date when I had found a new job.

No ‘woo’ just practical steps to reaching a goal.

Isn't this just having the right mindset? Don't get me wrong, I think your examples are absolutely spot on and I fully believe that when you make an active decision to change how you think, it can be transformational. But it isn't 'woo', it's just acknowledging that the stories we tell ourselves about our emotions and our experiences are much more important than what actually happens to us. This goes right back to the Stoics.

TriedItDidntLikeIt · 13/07/2025 00:33

I think I avoided reading the secret due to previous experiences with manifestation etc.

I have the same experience as someone upthread with writing down desired qualities in a partner, then ending up thinking if only I’d written something else. Multiple times.

Also visualised myself opening the door to my first house over and over. Managed to buy one, then had to sell at a loss due to major problems with it.
Asked the universe to send me a sign what to do with my life. Something terribly unfortunate happened right out of the blue.

Did some mad thing about manifestating cash where you had to sniff paper money, can’t remember what else. A favourite unique possession went up in flames that day, leading to (inadequate) insurance payout.

My current position on manifestation etc is Feck That Shit.

Yes exactly! It’s about a mindset shift and attracting more of what you want by matching it- whether or not that’s woo or not, I have no idea but I know it works
