To ask what you think about Starmer’s plan to stop the boats?

1000 replies

WhereIsMyJumper · 10/07/2025 22:30

I cannot see how his ‘one in one out’ plan is going to help. I also can’t understand why France is cooperating with us. What’s the incentive?

If you don’t agree with this plan, what would your answer be?

Starmer says 'one in, one out' migrant deal with France to begin within weeks

He says small boats migrants will be returned to France, in exchange for asylum seekers who have not tried to enter the UK illegally.

Border Force have had the power to seize the boats since 2023 amd have so far seized 600ish boats.

On the first 6 months of 2025, nearly 15,000 crossings have taken place.

So I'd start by recruiting and funding Border Force to use the most effective powers they have. Given the public opinion of the situation, I'm pretty sure they could recruit volunteers.

There aren't an unlimited number of boats.

I would destroy the boats. Imprison the pilot and any other employed or part of the gang.
Detention centres with dormitories, basic food and showers once a week. Not allowed out so can’t work illegally in the black, often criminal, economy - where they are totally exploited anyway and live in awful conditions for £1 ph wages.
Britain wouldn’t be so attractive then.
Also, actually employ enough staff to process applications.

I think the Refugee convention of 1951 doesn’t reflect the world we live in today and needs now to be updated.

9 billion is 0.00075% of the total amount the government spends in the U.K. By that metric it is a tiny number.

Oh what a relief to know that. When you put it like that it really doesn't matter 🙄

I'm not commenting on the policies or whether they were implemented or successful. I'm saying exactly the same as you: people will vote for what they want to hear.

People don't want immigration when there is a squeezed pot. If reputable politicians don't grasp this issue, it goes further up peoples agenda and people get angry and vote angry.

I'm already aware that Reform supporters vote for what they want to hear. That was obvious with Brexit; you're just stating the obvious.

This applies to Labour. I’m not sure why people think it wouldn’t.

Inspired by this thread, I've decided to burn my passport and pay someone to smuggle me across to <insert country of choice> where I know I can live undetected and not pay any tax. No visa application required!

Because it doesn’t. There are very few Labour voters who are pleased with what they’re hearing right now.

Get the army on the shores and turn them around. Stop benefits for illegal migrants. Pretty simple really.

Yet the governments proposed welfare reforms were deigned to save just 3.4 billion, which is dwarfed by the asylum seeker hotel bill.

Why bother if it’s such an insignificant sum?

I thought that was what the navy was for. If these people were in military boats dressed in military uniforms they wouldnt be getting anywhere near the UK. What they are doing is illegal and breaking the law yet they get taxied in and given the red carpet treatment. How many 1000's of people in the UK sleep on the streets, struggle to feed themselves, cant access dental treatment or have to wait for NHS treatment but turn up in a dinghy and it's all there.

Its taken a while before the inevitable "Shoot them when they land" comments appear....

How else would you turn them back without using lethal force, when they refuse?
Would the Army be ordered to standby if migrants sank the boat?

Tricky in law....

TopPocketFind · 11/07/2025 14:23

How will anyone illegal be able to claim benefits 🤔

MidnightMeltdown · 11/07/2025 14:25

Indesperationrightnow · 11/07/2025 13:47

They need to be put on a coach as soon as they are brought here, taken to the airport and removed back to France as would happen if they attempted to get into the UK via an airport. If they are genuine asylum seekers they would seek asylum in the first safe country they arrived in. They are paying 1000s to get here... where have they got that money from if they are all pleading poverty? The Home Office posting up lists of 'This is what you will get' doesnt help either. Asylum claims and appeals taking forever also makes it worth their while to come here. I am sure the usual mob will come on here shouting about racism but this is an absolute disaster and people are sick of it.

Not to mention the fact that many have already applied for asylum and had it rejected by multiple other countries, so they decide to try their luck in soft touch UK. Like this selfish idiot who killed his daughter doing just that:

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-68930088

I have no sympathy whatsoever for people who do this. People who believe that these people are genuine are soft in the head.

The same way anyone else is arrested without using lethal force.
Detain in the Channel and take them back to Calais.

SammyScrounge · 11/07/2025 14:32

This is true, I think. All their plans to stop the boats are just a way of.delaying any real action. Precisely nothing has been done to stop them landing, or to detain them in custody until they can be shipped back home.
No government can be so incompetent that it can do nothing.in a crisis like this.

If they come from France we should treat them on the basis they are French citizens attempting to enter illegally. So we turn the boats around and say off you go.

Yes. We just roll over every time. We used to be a strong nation once with borders.

We used to disregard other countries borders and are now upset that people from those colonised countries want to seek refuge here.

Geminijes · 11/07/2025 14:50

BoredZelda · 10/07/2025 23:14

“Whatever else they get”? What they get is 9.50 per week, if they are in “hotels” where meals are provided. That’s it. Those meals are not good quality, often aren’t enough and are mass produced. They are not living it up in 4 star hotels with room service and a spa. I’ve been in these places. One which used to be a 4 star hotel, but had been closed for a few years before they took in asylum seekers. Very little work was done to reopen it. There is damp and mould everywhere. Rooms which previously were lovely double rooms how have 4 single beds in them. They have no access to any of the amenities in the hotel. Frankly, I wouldn’t let my dog sleep in one of these places. Mobile phones are not provided to them by the Government, but there are some refugee charities who provide old refurbished phones to some refugees so they can remain in contact with the agencies who are supporting them and dealing with their applications for asylum.

Where should these “detention camps” be? Is it reasonable for this to be for years because they are way behind in processing applications? The government has statutory duty to provide accommodation. Nobody gets to choose where they live, if they don’t accept what they are offered, they won’t get any financial support.

The reason this is costing billions is A) the companies who have these contracts for food and shelter are largely Tory cronies who are taking the piss and B) the departments processing claims have been woefully under staffed.

In reply to whatever else they get..

Free NHS prescriptions.
Free dental treatment.
Free NHS sight tests.
The full value of a voucher towards the cost of glasses and contact lenses.
Free NHS wigs and fabric supports.
Refund of necessary costs of travel to receive NHS treatment.

More than what an OAP receives!
