To do something at work I've already been bollocked for and received a warning for twice?

I've name changed for this but here goes.

For the last 3 weeks I've been doing something at work that hasn't impacted anyone at all and nobody has noticed...until Monday. On Monday a senior manager discovered what I'd been doing and was angry and asked my supervisor to have a word with me. The supervisor had a word and told me not to do it again. I apologised and said I wouldn't even though I don't really have an option but to continue doing it.

However, the very next day (Tuesday, yesterday) I did it again. I didn't expect anyone to notice, as like I said, I've been doing this thing for 3 weeks and nobody's noticed. Well, obviously someone was keeping an eye on me because I got caught and this time I got a proper telling off and a 'record of discussion' is now going on my file.

Now, my AIBU is, I really don't have much choice but to continue doing the thing, at least for the time being, so would it be really that bad to do it again on my next shift which is the weekend, where there will be skeleton staff who won't know I've already been in trouble?

Just to add, many staff members are doing a very, very, similar thing openly but slightly differently which I feel is unfair. And, to clarify, it's not office based; we are an establishment that is supposed to be all about supporting 'the thing' I'm doing.

Seriously - trying hard to keep crows, magpies and pigeons alive??? Magpies decimate our garden birds, pigeons are a disease carrying pest in urban or country areas, and crows are more of the same. And not mention avian flu….

I would ask them what bird flu protocols they'd accept, and that you had assumed they were cool with this given it was THEM who handed you the bird to look after and they should reasonably understand what that actually entails!

Also I am extremely very jealous as I have always wanted a magpie (I realise hand rearing one should not mean it is a pet as the goal should be to re-wild, but shh, I can dream of a friendly, convenient, tidy, non-destructive corvid buddy).

I love magpies they're just always around but don't annoy you. Unlike the gull's. They literally stalk car's at our local McDonald's drive through.😂😂😂

Some people have empathy.
You should try it sometime.

This is him/her. Baby magpie.

Look at his face like hello I'm the cause of all this trouble. 😂😍

BetterWithPockets · 09/07/2025 21:36

OP, not sure if it’ll help your case, but our local wildlife rescue centre is still taking in birds atm, despite bird flu — other than gulls, that is (which you said colleagues at another branch were hand rearing — if they’re allowed to hand rear gulls, I don’t see why you’re not allowed a magpie!) — so I don’t think the risk can be too excessive. Although I guess it does depend where in the country you are…

They're part of the food chain I witnessed a beautiful sparrow hawk eat a pigeon in our back garden. Not nice to see but it's nature that bird needed to eat.

Which is why the abandoned chick should have been left alone.

This thread is reminding of the time a poster got unfairly refused some sort of ointment at the chemists but didn’t mention until further down the page that it was, in fact, for her pet centipede,

Something like that, anyway.

ClareBlue · 09/07/2025 21:46

Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 makes it illegal to keep a nesting bird in captivity unless registered. That might be the concern of your employer. You are breaking the law. Bringing your dog to work is not the same.

I may as well tell you.

I am hand rearing a baby bird who needs to be fed ideally every hour but when I'm at work I can stretch it to 1.5 hours between feeds. The feeds take literally seconds and I get comfort breaks at work so I've been feeding it then.

I've got nobody to look after it at home. I mean maybe I could ask my son (16) but he normally has plans.

What the actual fuck? Soooooo weird

Awww, cute little fella ain't he?

I hope you can sort something. Sadly a lot of people dont like to help corvids, which is a shame.

If you get some advice from a rehabilitation centre, could you get some mealworms and put them in a shallow bowl so he could have a go at pecking at them? If he can do a bit of the work if he's feathered, might help take the pressure off?

BeesTreesSeas · 09/07/2025 21:55

This is one of the best threads I’ve read on Mumsnet! On a serious note, I agree with your plan to pay your son to feed Maggie, OP. Or even better, ring around some rescues. 😍

I was with you until you put the photo up, I was already having a bad day and now you've given me one for sorrow? 😭

Well done you. The little guy looks really well!!

I can't understand the fuss at your work. It's madness.

I dont think you should risk your job over it though, so can someone else do the feeding at home? You mentioned your son... cheaper to give him McDs money than lose your job x

PS Bird flu is caught from one bird to another. This fledgling isnt mixing with other birds so the risk of bird flu is negligible imo.

Apha don't care about that
They've culled birds in completely seperate buildings and mammals in completely seperate buildings simply because staff were working in both without showering in between (but did have footbaths and clothing changes which didnt matter)

I highly doubt that it would be classed as a quarantine by apha standards if he is in the same building

Oh god, I sooo hope you’re a member of your local FaceBook group. It’s absolutely the place for your little foot stamping, lack of knowledge, gammony outrage.

Dellow · 09/07/2025 22:14

To use the excuse of ‘bird flu’ shows how ignorant they are and a vets practice should know better !

One would hope for a bit more compassion from a vets. If the bird had had bird flu it would be dead by now. I presume you are keeping it indoors and not exposed to new wild birds / being shat on by random passing wild birds? I’m guessing your vets is not an avian specialist with such a ridiculous knee jerk reaction to a buzz word like ‘bird flu’

Therefore just keeping it clean and totally separate from clients pets would be more than adequate. What exactly does the practice do if an actual disease risk comes through the door? Parvo. dog maybe 🙄?

Anyway, very clean and separate should be more than adequate. He looks of the size now that could have bigger feeds less often which may make your life easier.

If your job is at risk would one of the other ‘bird feeders’ from the other practice be willing to step in and help?
