to ask you what things people spend money on that you just don't understand?

This isn't a judgey thread or a bashing thread. People are absolutely free to spend their money on whatever they choose. Horses for courses.

But that said.. what expensive things do you see other people spending their money on that you simply don't "get"?

Mine is personalised numberplates. Cannot compute why anyone would care what combo of numbers or letters is on their car.

Interested to see what others think!

Buying an outfit and then buying shoes and a handbag to match it.

Thindog · 07/07/2025 16:37

Those little sticks in jars of synthetic scent.
Butt lifts.
Labiplasty.
Coffee shop coffee as a daily take away.
Expensive flash cars.
Reiki.

Hodgemollar · 07/07/2025 16:38

It honestly doesn’t bother my what people spend their money on, I find it weird to care this much.

Peclet · 07/07/2025 16:39

Very obviously logo'd designer items, I always think FAKE! Money screams and wealth whispers etc etc.

Fresh flowers- the admin that goes along with I can do with out. I am gracious when given them as a hosting gift (but it is a bit inconvenient) for a dinner party. I cut flowers from my own garden when the mood takes me.

Disney

Farrow and Ball- colour matching is available from other less spendy suppliers

Because you want a puppy and want to select a breed you know will fit your family.

This sounds like marketing spin from someone who wants you to pay hundreds of pounds with them.

Kitchen roll. I can’t understand why you spend money on something you immediately throw away, just use a tea towel, or a dishcloth, or a napkin, and then wash them.
I spent 5 minutes trying to think of an alternative to toilet roll, but that was a bit too grim.

We have largely replaced toilet roll in our house 🫢

I'm sure some people do think it's grim. It started for us with reusable nappies and cloths for the children, and then we came to the conclusion that toilet paper is disgusting. If you got shit anywhere else on your body you wouldn't be satisfied with wiping it off with paper. So now we use a bidet attachment / reusable wipes combo. The wipes go in a wet bag inside a sealed bucket once used, then the whole lot goes in the washing machine when the bag is full. I find it so much more hygienic now but I expect others would need some time to come round to the idea.

We do keep loo rolls on hand for guests!

Isittimeformynapyet · 07/07/2025 16:40

People that can save £3 on a meal deal and say don't worry.

@Iloveeverycat What does this sentence mean please? Do you just mean "£3 meal deals?"

Botox, lip fillers, hairdressers, manicures, big eyebrows, fast food, private education, big weddings, big stag and hen nights, huge TVs, anything with a logo on it. But I’m sure there are lots of things I spend money on that other people wouldn’t understand.

You don't get why someone goes to the hairdresser? 😳

Globules · 07/07/2025 16:41

I've bought brand new cars. A great deal per year when you consider the cost over the 15-20 years you keep it. Particularly when bought on a 0% credit card.

I don't understand buying a car on PCP. Why pay £100s a month for 3 years to not own a car at the end of it.

I've also bought brand new houses. They were definitely worth it when they were comparable prices to existing homes AND the builders were offering massive incentives, such as deposit paid, and new carpets and white goods.

My issue is people not getting the best bang for their buck. Why buy an item for £100 when a 2 minute Google tells you where to get an identical item for £50.

I think light-hearted may have been missed from @FeelinTwentySixPointTwo's original post 😉

I’ve had personalised number plates explained to me, so I can sort of see why if someone is into cars (I am not) it is appealing.

I can probably sit and rationalise why anything already listed might appeal to someone even if it isn’t my thing, anything except Frey Bentos tinned pies.

Catsandcannedbeans · 07/07/2025 16:42

I was going to say horses… but then I looked at our cat. Sat on her flowery cat tree… that was pretty pricey. At least you can ride a horse I guess, she’s just a spoiled cat. Mind you better a spoiled cat than a spoiled child.

Don’t really get super expensive wine, but I’ve only had very expensive wine a handful of times.

We don’t really spend much on kid clothes. Especially when they’re little. Good coat, good shoes, cheap stuff for the rest. They just grow so fast or muck it up. I really do not understand designer clothes for kids.

bohemianblasphemy · 07/07/2025 16:42

New phones when the previous one does exactly the same more or less (and it's a pain to log back into all the apps when you switch over.) Concert tickets, ridiculous amounts of money to see a tiny figure miles away 😳

AvidJadeShaker · 07/07/2025 16:43

I can’t think of anything, I’m into spending a stupid amount on holidays and not interested in expensive clothes but I totally understand that we are all different.

DriveMeCrazy1974 · 07/07/2025 16:43

Expensive handbags.
Expensive shoes.
Gaming - some of those games are £80 now!
Weddings abroad - and then those same people getting annoyed when not everyone wants to go their destination wedding!
Coffee shop coffee - seems very expensive for what it is.
I'd never judge though, because we spend a lot of our spare cash on getting as many UK holidays as possible and nice food and drink.
It'd be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff!

Yes, this was what i was considering, but I couldn’t bear it! Fair play to you, you have a stronger character than me :-)

Easyjet express boarding 😂

Gerwurtztraminer · 07/07/2025 16:44

I don't get people buying stuff they can't afford and will put them in major debt and yet it's a want not a need.

Anything that is just to 'keep up with the Jones's' or to try to fit in with a social circle rather then be your own person.

I think that it's daft to use credit and have no savings just so you have expensive flashy cars, massive houses and holidays to Dubai or similar. If you can't afford it, cut your cloth.

Ridiculous eyebrows, puffy lips and tasteless tattoos they can't afford, just to be a clone of their 'mates'.

If you are wealthy and money is no object and you have pensions and investments to fall back on, then spend away on all the tacky stuff if you wish, no harm done.

But making yourself or family miserable or unwell worrying about unnecessary debt is the height of stupidity. Risking your future self to spend in the moment now is also crazy and most people will regret it one day. That flashy car now versus being able to put your kids through uni with no student loans? A more modest house and mortgage now so you can have a good pension when you are older?

Some people are just spenders not savers. I just don't get it.

A lot of people are loyal to one breed so marketing doesn't come into it.
You can pay thousands for crossbreeds with no pedigree these days, so it is far better to go for a purebred from health checked parents and know exactly what inherited traits you can expect.

PinkyFlamingo · 07/07/2025 16:46

This is just turning into a list of things people don't like, not "dont get". I struggle to think anyone for example doesn't understand why people like holidays!

gottalottodo · 07/07/2025 16:46

ShiverMeLogs · 07/07/2025 15:55

Takeaways are delicious and easy, so totally get that.

Private school I don't get though.

You don’t understand why parents would want their child to be in a class of 15 rather than 32? With a teacher and 2 support staff? Ok!

TeenLifeMum · 07/07/2025 16:47

Luis Vuitton level of pricey handbags - but this says more about me and how clumsy I am and just chucking my bag in the car/floor etc.

personalised number plates I’ve never understood the appeal.

Cleaning their house roof, unless there's some sort of issue that requires it

I am unaware of anyone having their roof cleaned. I've never seen that service advertised either. I'm sure it happens, but how come this evening occurred to you?
