I swear I'm not a pearl clutcher but slightly shocked at the amount of little girls at the Sabrina concert

I was at Sabrina's concert at Hyde Park yesterday and a good segment of the audience were little girls think between 8-12). Not only are most of the lyrics not really age appropriate but many of them were wearing hot pants and make up. Even my teenage daughter (who I was accompanying) thought it was a bit odd. The show was very PG (and there was a parental guidance disclaimer), so at least she's aware of who listens to her music.

the arena show was pretty sexy, I did wince a couple of times there, but agree kids don’t make much of it and I grew up with my mum playing ‘short dick man’ at parties with her mates and I’m alive.

What I do find absolutely crazy is how many people are paying the prices these concerts cost to take kids under 10! Under 5 sometimes! they won’t even remember!

Be a little bit wiser baby
Put it on, put it on
'Cause tonight is the night when two become one

Excuse me while I cringe in retrospective embarrassment. Oh my goodness I sang along to that...

Whaaaaaaat! Which one was that? I never noticed.

2 become 1. Never noticed until I was older it was about sex 😂

Bet you're not a regular mom, you're a cool mom 😎

Nope, definitely a regular mum.

My children are all well behaved, healthy, very academically successful, kind, have regular bedtimes, do chores. I just dont panic about them overhearing the odd swear word.

I'm thinking of the Sabrina who sang 'boys, boys, boys,' the video was pretty racy, or is this someone else?

OMG
Get with the programme!!!😂

I feel like this has always happened though. I certainly remember loving Madonna and singing along to Like a Virgin at 8 years old with absolutely zero clue of what a virgin even was.

For me it was lady gaga hahah, let's have some fun this beat is sick I wanna take a ride on your disco stick 🤣

LittleMonks11 · 06/07/2025 18:15

It wasn’t an Oasis gig. The demographic was as expected (including by Sabrina). I was there.

Caligirl80 · 06/07/2025 18:18

It had a PG cert and a parental guidance disclaimer - what's the problem??

If you're actually worried about the content of her songs then why are you even allowing a teenager to the concert? Especially if under the age of consent?

BingoWasHisNameOo · 06/07/2025 18:23

I remember singing ‘I wanna have sex on the beach’ and ‘I’m horny, horny, horny, horny’ and many others when I was 5 through to pre-teens with no concept of the sexual nature of the lyrics.

NevilleBigBottom · 06/07/2025 18:24

It was toned down to comply with the licence

GingerBeverage · 06/07/2025 18:27

Curious, hands up who wore hot pants ages 8-12?

I definitely found attracting male attention when that age extremely gross and chose to wear clothes that didn’t reveal my body, but maybe I should have?

Maybe you should have? What do you mean Mother Superior?

It’s fashion/dress up for a pop concert in the context of this conversation.

Mushybut · 06/07/2025 18:40

but maybe I should have?

bit weird @GingerBeverage

care to elaborate?

MissAmbrosia · 06/07/2025 18:47

I remember there was a song by the Goodies in the 70s called Father Xmas don't come near me. And every verse they missed off a word. I thought it was hilarious. I had no clue :)

Oh give it a break. This is a thread about girls not boys. Don't get me started on teenage boys!

If you think the world (and children's development) hasn't changed since you were young, you must be about 15. You're not going to help it by saying it's just about misogyny.

I’m guessing you are too young to remember mini-pops.

Jellycatspyjamas · 06/07/2025 09:06

Music has always been a bit edgy, I certainly sang some very dodgy lyrics in my childhood - Relax! anyone? It’s great for young girls to get out and see live music, and most of the sex stuff doesn’t connect in the way it does with adults. I remember seeing Grease as a 10 year old and then again as an adult - certainly not the happy, innocent high school movie I thought it was.

Relax was banned by the BBC at the time though.

notSure2024 · 06/07/2025 22:15

Well I can remember having my take that video confiscated on Xmas day because the dancing in ‘do what you like’ was too raunchy….and getting it back on Boxing Day after my grandparents left - this has been happening in music and music videos forever. At least Sabrina is a strong woman not bowing down to men - yes there’s some sexual references but I would honestly prefer that to the lyrics we grew up with where women were mostly sat around daydreaming about men and how much they loved them. Or missed them. And waiting around for them.
Man child for instance is just brilliant. Much healthier messaging.
I was there with my 12 year old and we both had a great time. The show was toned down, and I feel far more comfortable her singing lyrics from an EMPOWERED female than I do the stuff like I did - where its the female waiting and hoping for the man. Far more the damaging message I would suggest!
the only thing that surprised me slightly is the parents that bought their kids the cropped merch t shirt with 69 on the back….my daughter without me saying anything said she didn’t want it for that reason because she understood the reference - more damaging where these conversations are not happening and sexual references are taboos I would suggest!

DD is 20 and saw the show a few months ago. Unless she's changed it, it's not PG unless simulated sex with the dancers is PG-rated. DD did say that most of the sex references went right over the heads of the smaller audience members.

Sabrina Carpenter made her name in wholesome Disney programmes and is now trying to shake off the Disney and appeal to grown ups. Parents with half a brain would be aware of that.

She toned it down for Hyde park, also reported by bbc as such

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/07/2025 22:26

What like this:
“why so sexy if so dumb
and how survive the earth so long
if I’m not there it won’t get done
I choose to blame your mum”

Blaming the mother for a useless man is hardly a feminist message.

wtftodo · 06/07/2025 22:39

I was there yesterday too with my 9 and 11yo daughters. As predicted, any sexual innuendo be it in the dancing or the lyrics went over their heads. Given the furore and the “are you sure” from family members I was half convinced we were walking into a X rated show. It really wasn’t. They had a great time, as did the other kids around them.

As others have said… Madonna, etc.

If we want to nit pick. I haven’t used the word feminist, I’ve used the word empowered.
I would imagine the lyric is making the same point that many women do the world over about their other half men children. The one I was married to was still Molly coddled by his mother into his 30’s, who regularly let herself into our home without invitation to iron his clothes, and generally tend to his every need. I very much blamed her for his man child
state of mind! And I don’t see that as anti feminist. I see that as making perfect logical sense. I also don’t think I’m the first woman to have these thoughts, nor is Sabrina carpenter….i did not say her lyrics were a glowing example - just I’d rather that than the messages I grew up with such as
Oh, I wanna hear you tell me
You don't want my love
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me it's all over
I won't believe it 'til you
Put your hand on your heart
And tell me that we're through, ooh, oh
Put your hand on your heart
Hand on your heart
and that’s not to complain about Kylie as i still
absolutely love her. I just think the sexual references go over the kids heads mostly but I think they do pick up on the don’t mess with me vibe….thus at least they’re empowering

Rallentanda · 07/07/2025 09:08

I don't particularly love Sabrina Carpenter, I think her recent image on hands and knees in front of a man is awful actually, but honestly pop music has been relying on sex, sexual imagery, sexual innuendo, thinly-veiled references to sex, deeply buried references to sex: forever!

Pricelessadvice · 07/07/2025 09:25

Rallentanda · 06/07/2025 15:37

Hit Me Baby One More Time was literally about getting fucked!

No it wasn’t. ‘Hit me’ (from ‘Hit me up’) is slang for ‘Call me’.
You hear it in a lot of American films.
