I swear I'm not a pearl clutcher but slightly shocked at the amount of little girls at the Sabrina concert

I was at Sabrina's concert at Hyde Park yesterday and a good segment of the audience were little girls think between 8-12). Not only are most of the lyrics not really age appropriate but many of them were wearing hot pants and make up. Even my teenage daughter (who I was accompanying) thought it was a bit odd. The show was very PG (and there was a parental guidance disclaimer), so at least she's aware of who listens to her music.

“Like a virgin, touched for the very first time”

I think that’s pretty tame compared to “come right on me”.

You are not allowed to think this!
Children must be encouraged to be sexual from an early age. If you don't believe that you're a prude blah blah.
Sarcasm obviously.
Patriarchy rules. Sabrina is just another tool for it.

Aspanielstolemysanity · 06/07/2025 15:44

My daughter Iikes Sabrina. She listens to the music on Spotify. She hasn't been to a concert.
I don't think she understands half the words so I am not very worried about the content
She also plays with dolls and Lego and likes colouring in and climbing trees and having water fights

Yabu to assume you know everything about a childhood based on a snapshot in time

PersephonePomegranate · 06/07/2025 15:45

But it's not just the sexual references that go over their heads, her songs are expletive ridden! Every song contains the work 'fuck' at least once!

Cattery · 06/07/2025 15:45

Think yourselves lucky. We had Gary Glitter 🤢

I was listening to the Spice Girls singing about putting a condom on during sex when I was 7 and I turned out fine.

Which song is that Shock

Song lyrics clearly go right over my head!

I was a tween when Madonna was at her peak and cheerily sang along to "like a virgin" and if I thought about the lyrics at all I think I just assumed she meant like "the virgin Mary" and I wasn't too sure what that meant either, so I just sang along obliviously

PreciousMomentsHun · 06/07/2025 15:48

Aww. I was 8 when I was screaming " we don't need no water let the mother fucker burn!" and "if you wanna be my lover" and "I would twist my knife and bleed my aching heart."

Kids sing songs and laugh at jokes they don't get. Who gives a shit.

That said, I find parents who dress their prepubscent kids in hot pants, bralets, bikinis, thongs, stripper heels etc weird as fuck and I can never shake that.

My daughter isnt going to go into meltdown and become a delinquent because she heard a naughty word.

I"d say Sabrina's lyrics are better.
At least she sounds a bit feisty.

One could argue Madonna was playing into the whole "virgin fetish" some men have

I feel like this has always happened though. I certainly remember loving Madonna and singing along to Like a Virgin at 8 years old with absolutely zero clue of what a virgin even was.

I didn’t even know what the wilderness was never mind a virgin 😂

I'm from the Britney times and she was sexy, but at least the first albums were not really sexual. (Maybe I'm a slave 4 u) And yes there was the kiss between her and Madonna etc .. but that was for an older audience and AFAIK didn't do it at her concerts

‘Hit me baby one more time’, in her school uniform ? Really ?

stayathomer · 06/07/2025 15:52

Even when you think of her song ‘taste’ - all very young adulty (I find even the idea of that song horrible!) but yes as people said I suppose you can’t get away from artists having older material than the people who are into them!

I'm not debating that, I've already said I like her music and I think she's funny, but I wouldn't want my young daughter singing it and I wouldn't take her to see the concert!

whynotmereally · 06/07/2025 15:53

My dd loved candy shop and blow my whistle (radio friendly versions) when she was around 8 she’s fine now . This has been the case for many decades. If anything it’s sweet Sabrina is doing a pg version to acknowledge her younger fans.

NewGoldFox · 06/07/2025 15:54

I think it all goes over their heads.
Look and listen to the old Britney videos/songs it’s all much the same.

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 06/07/2025 15:55

Bananalanacake · 06/07/2025 10:35

I'm thinking of the Sabrina who sang 'boys, boys, boys,' the video was pretty racy, or is this someone else?

Definitely someone else - that song was late 80s!

girljulian · 06/07/2025 15:58

My sister and I were obsessed with a weirdly curtailed version of The Beatles’ white album on which our favourites were Ob-la Di Ob-La Da (long time child friendly classic) and, er, “Why Don’t We Do It In The Road?” When I was seven it never even occurred to me to wonder what “it” was in the context of “no one will be watching us, why don’t we do it in the road?”

Personally I find SC’s lyrics a bit offputting but I guarantee her child audience doesn’t register any of it.

My school’s religious education was obviously lacking, because at that age I thought a virgin must be someone who has had sex, because the “Virgin Mary” had a baby, and you can’t do that without having sex therefore Virgin couldn’t possibly be someone who hasn’t had sex.

Same here, @tammienorrie singing "I'm horny, horny horny horny" as a kid. Maybe I thought it was about unicorns.

Edited

I innocently thought it was 'honey honey honey'. Probably for the best.

@Ethicaldebacle what is a pearl clutcher?

Speak properly.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 06/07/2025 16:09

You can’t blame the girls for being there. It’s the parents of the girls who have made the decision that hyper- sexualisation is acceptable for their primary aged kids.

Basically a Mary Whitehouse character.
