I swear I'm not a pearl clutcher but slightly shocked at the amount of little girls at the Sabrina concert

I was at Sabrina's concert at Hyde Park yesterday and a good segment of the audience were little girls think between 8-12). Not only are most of the lyrics not really age appropriate but many of them were wearing hot pants and make up. Even my teenage daughter (who I was accompanying) thought it was a bit odd. The show was very PG (and there was a parental guidance disclaimer), so at least she's aware of who listens to her music.

Agree with @MrsEverest.

@PrincessOfPreschool, your list of what a girl’s good/mature attributes should be is depressing and sexist - caring for others, cooking, knowing they are not at the centre of things, and working even when exhausted…… ffs.

MrsEverest · 06/07/2025 08:56

there’s no change at all in the misogyny you’re spouting.

Teenage girls cannot do anything right.
As ever.

Their interests are facile, they’re too grown up or not grown up enough, they’re not spending enough of their time on domestic or caring tasks, etc etc.

There really is nothing new under the sun.

Oh give it a break. This is a thread about girls not boys. Don't get me started on teenage boys!

If you think the world (and children's development) hasn't changed since you were young, you must be about 15. You're not going to help it by saying it's just about misogyny.

How do you know I don't think that about boys too? I do, however, think there is much more pressure on girls to LOOK grown up very young.

I was listening to the Spice Girls singing about putting a condom on during sex when I was 7 and I turned out fine.

This! I used to sing My Sharona without a bloody clue

ShesTheAlbatross · 06/07/2025 09:57

I think there’s a point where a child is too young to understand the references so it doesn’t matter much. But I wouldn’t take an 8 yr old to a Sabrina carpenter concert because I’d assume the general vibe would be quite adult - I mean, you said she’d taken out the simulated sex position bit, but you wouldn’t know that in advance. I wouldn’t turn it off if it came on the radio, but a song about sex with lyrics “come right on me” doesn’t really suggest child friendly concert to me.

The comparisons to Madonna - did many 8 yr olds go to her concerts?

pollytunnelanna · 06/07/2025 09:58

What about the young girls who were obsessed with Madonna or Britney? It’s not something new

dairydebris · 06/07/2025 09:58

Ethicaldebacle · 06/07/2025 08:33

She actually did change it. So no simulated sex, but there were obviously some sexual references

The problem is those sexual references might go over their heads, but she's still an idol to them, they will ape her ways, and then you have weirdly sexualised kids not even knowing what theyre doing. No way I'd let a pre teen go.

I dont think youre a pearl clutcher. 8 - 12 is too young.

That’s been the case for all of time in terms of sexual references in music. The thing that’s shifted the goalposts is unlimited online access to material much more sexualised than anything you’ll find at a pop concert.

Really? For 8 year olds? So glad I grew up when I did ( and find it very difficult to work out what's best for my young ones )

I'm from the Britney times and she was sexy, but at least the first albums were not really sexual. (Maybe I'm a slave 4 u) And yes there was the kiss between her and Madonna etc .. but that was for an older audience and AFAIK didn't do it at her concerts

I grew up loudly and blissfully obliviously singing all kinds of songs including some VERY explicit ones.

Meh.

Bananalanacake · 06/07/2025 10:35

I'm thinking of the Sabrina who sang 'boys, boys, boys,' the video was pretty racy, or is this someone else?

oh op

Either way my only contribution is stop passing on this kind of judginess to your 14 yr old!

MiloMinderbinder925 · 06/07/2025 15:04

I was just reading a review and apparently this concert was toned down. It's well known that she's very sexual, simulates sex and wears lingerie on stage.

“Like a virgin, touched for the very first time”

I recall singing this at the top of my voice as a very young girl in the early nineties

Late 90s, aged 7/8/9ish, we were all singing ‘I wanna have sex on the beach’, just as all the parents were collecting from my friend’s bday party 😆 actually happened a couple of years in a row, that family loved that song! I remember at the time thinking it was pretty inappropriate and I was under 10! Same friend I had to explain what ‘I’m horny, horny horny horny’ meant a couple of years later so I think her parents just felt safe thinking every kid was cluelessly naive!!

As a parent now I definitely feel uncomfortable about kids being at Sabrina Carpenter, IDGAF if that makes me a pearl clutcher 🤷‍♀️

purpleme12 · 06/07/2025 15:14

I definitely remember me and my sister singing 'i wanna have sex on the beach'
I would have been 12 sand by sister would have been 10
I distinctly remember us singing it in the car and mum going 'ugghh that's so vulgar do you have to sing that' 😆

Hit Me Baby One More Time was literally about getting fucked!

Rallentanda · 06/07/2025 15:39

I remember being that age and the absolute glamour is what I loved. Madonna was like catnip because we could dress up like her. So was Boy George, come to that. Debbie Harry was my childhood idol. I couldn't give a stuff what the songs were about, it went over my head. To be laughed at in later years!

MonteStory · 06/07/2025 08:21

Wait little girls like pop music?!

Have you actually heard the content of her lyrics?! Not child friendly at all!

I like her music and think her lyrics are funny, but they're not appropriate for that age range, which is tricky as it sounds like bubblegum pop which kids are attracted to.

Mushybut · 06/07/2025 15:40

Even 2 years old were welcomed!!
