Is Pride exempt from public indecency rules?

DD (aged 14) went into London today with a friend she is staying with. I can only assume friend’s parents didn’t realise it was pride weekend and we don’t live anywhere near London so had no idea.

Aside from the fact that it was a complete ballache getting back out because tube stations were closed, DD said she was shocked at some of the things she saw in terms of arses on display with men just wearing “thongs”.

How is it OK to have such sexualised stuff going on in view of young kids?

Sexualised behaviour in public is not appropriate. Sex is great, but it belongs in private, not in public spaces in the middle of the day.

Wearing a thong isn't sexualised behaviour

Charming.

You said I know, but quite frankly, all you have to do is use your eyeballs 😅 when I pointed out that Pride events generally promote themselves as being family friendly and gs r no 18+ earnings on their website.

Yes I’ve been to a Pride event.

I have no idea why I have to read some ‘well written texts’ on the history of Pride in order to point out that public nudity and fetish is nit ‘family friendly’.

Anyone who doesn't understand what the Pride march is London is like and wants to go with their kids,

Are you suggesting that despite their claims, we should assume that Pride is full of men displaying their sexual fetishes and is therefore utterly unsuitable for children? I

According to Pride history, gay men worked hard to dispel any links with paedophiles and inappropriate behaviour around children as a myth though??

I'm not claiming or suggesting anything. You, by contrast, are saying a whole lot more than anyone asked for 🙄

Once again, people can and should do their own research. You obviously do not think that London Pride is suitable for kids. I don't either, particularly. I do think Pride elsewhere can be very family-friendly. Not all Pride events are the same. You seem to be struggling with understanding that part.

I'm also really not sure why you seem to be under the impression that I personally have any influence on what the Pride organisers say about their events?! I didn't design the website. I also don't really care what it says. I'm aware of what I might see there, just as I'm aware of what I might experience at carnival or at a concert or a rave. If you take offence at their claims, you're welcome to email them directly. I'm sure they would just LOVE to hear from you 😊

Also, your assumptions are just getting bolder and bolder; I've never seen public nudity at Pride?! A naked butt cheek does not consitute full on nudity. And for some reason you seem desperate to suggest Pride is connected to paedo's and so on. I may as well take the opportunity to say I disagree strongly and find it super distasteful and weird that you keep suggesting such things.

I'm just refuting the argument that it's something new

But it's also obvious there is an undercurrent of homophobia even if people are acting like there isn't

Ah there we go. Resorting to the age old ‘you’re homophobic’ thing when your argument falls apart. It doesn’t wash anymore. Try harder.

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:42

Don't bring your kids to pride then!!! It's very bloody easy.

Why shouldn't kids be able to attend Pride?

I mean if they are used in a sexual act, then yes, yes, it does.

They weren't having anal in the street 🤣

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:55

What the actual....so gay people are cowards now as well as everything else they've been accused of on this thread.?!? I despair.

No I'm not saying that.

Ultimately groups of people will all stick together, protect their own. It goes back very far in history. But these straight women so desperate to virtue signal will be left very high and dry when they're expecting their pat on the back and their thanks.

TempestTost · 05/07/2025 22:57

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:44

When did kink and gay pride become synonymous? I'm sorry you had that experience that's horrible. Kink is not what pride is about.

Most gay people I know are no longer going to Pride, if they ever did. It just doesn't have anything to do with their lives, they find a lot of it offensive and reductive, and they don't like the assumptions that they find about their politics. They don't think their sexuality is among the more significant elements of their lives and personalities.

I think that is really common, and Pride has kind of been left to the people for whom their sex life is not just an element of their private life, but in a lot of cases, it's their hobby, and most of their social life, and it dictates their politics.

The idea that anyone who isn't keen on publicly celebrating adult's sex lives in public is homophobic only works if the second group is really what it means to be homosexual. But it isn't, so it's not.

IButtleSir · 05/07/2025 22:58

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:44

But you are the one telling everyone that, if we don't want to see people dressed in fetish gear, we just shouldn't look. So is kink an acceptable part of Pride or not?

HundredMilesAnHour · 05/07/2025 22:58

Branster · 05/07/2025 22:38

@HundredMilesAnHour why would I want to take my children for a day out at a time of the year when every time we did this in the past we were faced with things I did not want them to see and I certainly didn't expect to find. Massive flag of a dildo flying from a bus as one example.
Going to work on a Monday is not a family day out and because you are going to the office it implies you are an adult.
Big difference.

The pearl clutching runs strong in this one. 🙄Best keep the kids at home in isolation with no WiFi, TV or social media until they’re adults. And avoid those buses too. 😂

SquishedMallow · 05/07/2025 22:59

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:48

Yes. That exactly the same thing. Christ. You're disgusting to even suggest that.

She's not disgusting. She's a realist. This is a very apt comparison.

lifeonmars100 · 05/07/2025 22:49

What are your thoughts about all the men who go around bare chested as soon as the sun comes out.

Unrepeatable.

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 05/07/2025 22:55

Wearing a thong isn't sexualised behaviour

Wearing a thong under your pants isn't.

Wearing a thong in the street to celebrate your sexual orientation is sexualised. That's the point.

RufustheFactualReindeer · 05/07/2025 23:00

where did she say gay?

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:35

Thankfully someone has a brain. Jesus, this thread is scary. It's like something from the 70's.

It’s the reactions from you two that are scary. Honestly it’s not ok.

Why are you defending this??

DaniO2 · 05/07/2025 23:01

UsingAMansNameInAWomensWorld · 05/07/2025 22:57

They weren't having anal in the street 🤣

No one suggested that.

To remind you of the actual convo - You said arses aren't inherently sexual! I said gay men might disagree. You said straight men like them too.

So I'm pretty sure we've reached the conclusion your first statement was incorrect. It's so nice when people can talk things through amicably and end up agreeing.

Horseebooks · 05/07/2025 23:01

SquishedMallow · 05/07/2025 22:10

I don't see females parading their whole unknickered arse at pride. I've never ever seen it.

for lady arses, you should’ve gone to Beyoncé. Jaysus the arses. Arses for bloody days

IButtleSir · 05/07/2025 23:01

JaneEyre40 · 05/07/2025 22:56

It's obvious the people that don't actually have close friends or family that are gay. They've all moved on and are trying to live whilst cringing at the 'pride' thing. It's only kinky straight male lesbian and fetishist that are left being shouty MC shout face at pride. (Oh and the blue haired ones with poor mental health and square glasses ) Oh and of course the straight women shouting behind them and spitting at other straight people.

The number of people defending men displaying sexual fetishes in public on Mumsnet is incredible at the moment.

This is a photo from Pride in 1978

Leather and thongs have been part of Pride for as long as there's been Pride

Exactly, thank you. This is why I keep asking if any of these people actually know anything about Pride. It's like they've never actually even looked up what Pride means, where it came from, why it's important, what concepts are included, the history of the culture... and then they're surprised?!

You seem gleeful about the argument from PP that pride has always been about fetishes.

Oi... some of us boring, Pride-avoiding lesbian mummies with normal-coloured hair wear square glasses, too! 😂 (Although mine are more rectangular, now I think about it.)
