To think that even this horrendous tragedy won't change America's stance on climate change?

I'm just reading about the dreadful flash flood in Texas and all those poor little girls who have drowned. So sad.

But, just as endless school shootings make no difference to America's attitude towards guns, I don't think this will change many people's minds - and especially Trump's - on climate change. Deniers will continue to argue that flash floods have always happened, as have wildfires, without any recognition that the frequency and intensity of these weather events are affected by human driven climate change.

So
YABU. - this will be a wake up call for the US government
YANBU - the US will still refuse to work towards carbon reduction/net zero

Hotter weather = the air can hold more moisture = bigger rainfall = more damaging flash floods

Climate change doesn't feel that urgent in the UK, but it does in areas with Mediterranean climate - California, parts of Texas, Australia and of course the Mediterranean. Increased frequency of severe flash floods, forest fires, prolonged heatwaves in the mid 40s, temperatures 5-10 degrees above average for large parts of the year... some areas on the planet are at the thin edge of climate change, to the point that they might be barely habitable in our lifetime.

KeepCavey · 05/07/2025 07:32

Yes, too much old money, - and too many angry OLD men - in control of and propping up the system.
OK, I'm an octogenarian myself - also a mum, so popping into MN to hear the views of the young and younger generation.
These old men will not be around to suffer the resulting mess they are continuing and re-creating, it will be my adult children and grandchildren and everyone else's children / grandchildren who will pay the price and pick up the pieces. F**k the old bastards.

StandFirm · 05/07/2025 07:58

America and MAGA are too different things. The problem is that this administration does not care how unpopular they really are as long as they can make their billions and grow their stranglehold over US institutions.

AuntyHistamine · 05/07/2025 06:09

What makes you think there's anything to convince? The weather has always been chaotic. That's what planet earth is.

I don't think many people in the UK realise how severe a lot of weather in the US is. Tornadoes and floods are not uncommon and never have been.

Indeed it is a much more extreme climate in most parts of the US but that's why compounding such borderline hostile weather with the devastating effects of climate chaos caused by humans is nothing short of criminal. Despite the tragedy in Texas, in his 4th of July speech, Trump dissed renewables and blathered on about 'coal is back' and how coal is 'beautiful and clean' (puke emoji).
US administrations were never perfect, but this one... there are just no words.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 05/07/2025 06:37

As I said in my OP, there have always been extreme weather events but the frequency and intensity of these is increasing and that is due to climate change.

The last major flood happened in 1987

Even the Club World Cup this summer in America keeps getting games suspended due to torrential rain, while in most games players are struggling in the stifling heat.

Where? In Texas? A quick google will bring up a few examples, such as Hurricane Harvey in 2017.
Elsewhere in the US they're getting more frequent. I was personally caught up in pretty bad ones last year. It's scary.

The US govt (at any level) doesn't seem to care about its children. School shooting after school shooting, yet the rights & demands of the NRA come first.

This is the same. What's a few drowned school girls against PROFIT. Apparently, it happened before in the same area. 10 teenagers drowned that time, yet they carried on running summer camps there. No flood warning system in place.

“The National Weather Service issued a flood watch early Thursday afternoon that highlighted Kerr County as a place at high risk of flash flooding through the overnight. A flash flood warning was issued for Kerr County as early as around 1 a.m. CT on Friday. A more dire flash flood emergency warning was then issued for Kerr County at 4:03 a.m. CT, followed by another one for Kerrville at 5:34 a.m. CT.”

flood warning systems aren’t in place - who told you they’re not?

Fatalities reported in catastrophic central Texas flooding | CNN

Widespread rainfall of 4 to 6 inches, with some reports of over 10 inches, has fallen since Thursday evening, prompting multiple flash flood emergencies.

Yes the last major flood event for the area in question.

This is such sad news, but you're not wrong at all. I saw this today - blew my mind...

I actually kinda agree with that sentiment though.

BlueJuniper94 · 05/07/2025 08:29

OP, I said you were BU, because even if people did believe in climate change - then what? Its too late. We're past the point of no return. To have any chance of trying to mitigate what's coming we would all have to revert to premodern lifestyles and there would be no possibility of the planet supporting the life it currently does. So ... yeah moral grandstanding isn't going to fix anything.

Instead of burying our heads in the sand and waiting for the ecosystem to collapse around us, we should start voting for people with a sense of duty for a change, not for narcissistic idiots who want to hoard the maximum amount of money (at our expense).

Echobelly · 05/07/2025 08:50

Yanbu. The current regime only cares about money for their chums in coal and oil and will never accept climate change. They'll just keep pretending its 'just cyclical change' despite the actual facts

Voting? 😂

Forgive me, you think voting will fix this?

You think anyone who will do a fraction of what needs to be done will in any way electable? Let alone get as far as being on a ballot. YABVU

This.

Try the natural history of the planet. You know, like successive ice ages and big thaws every few thousand years, long before humans existed. I wonder who was causing climate change then?

You are showcasing your ignorance really well.

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 05/07/2025 09:06

@BlueJuniper94 it's not about "believing" in climate change, it's about understanding that it's happening - as it always has - and the impact that human activity has on the speed of change.

It’s a cynical strategy to sow doubt in people’s minds about the cause of the climate crisis. Or else this person is a useful idiot.

Despite people assuming that America is the centre of the universe, and controls everything, there are hundreds of countries who also do nothing to help stop climate change. Everyone needs to do something for it to have any really relevant effect. Even the UK doesn’t do everything it should do.

I'm not sure what the distinction is that you're trying to draw

Promo981 · 05/07/2025 09:43

Ignoring the is it or isn't it causes by climate change (I'm a believer in CC) America gives no fucks about their people unless they are white and rich. Unless something benefits them then nothing will happen.
