Photo of husband posted on Facebook group with allegation - legalities?

Earlier I was alerted to a post by a woman on our town’s community Facebook page. It is a rant about a flat in her block being used by a group of prostitutes which is causing issues at unsociable hours and how the landlord isn’t doing anything about it. Under this there are photos of various men at the entrance of the block of flats and one of them is my husband. The insinuation is that these have all been visiting that flat.

I want to know the legalities of this woman posting such an allegation as she is outright refusing to remove the post. It is obviously extremely humiliating for me (friends and no doubt colleagues have seen it) and there’s so many comments underneath. We’ve been on a ‘break’ due to various issues but still living together and haven’t been intimate for nearly a year so I don’t need a lecture on how I shouldn’t have married such a man.

Is it me or is someone putting up a post like this without any thought for the consequences on various families etc utterly disgusting?

OP posts:

She may well be right but sounds like she’s pictured them all by the main entrance they could be going into any flat

It's only libel if it is not true. Truth is an absolute defence to defamation in the UK. If the men are not using prostitutes they can sue for libel.

And if they are using prostitutes then they have no reason to hide anything at all since obviously they think that's ok.

And if their families believe these men are degrading and harming them by using prostitutes they should throw these men out.

Anyway, the OP can very easily find out if it's true or not - she just has to go along to the "physio" with her husband and it will all be sorted out.

Obviously it's not libel if it's true. The woman posting does not know whether what she is implying is true or not, though.
And I agree, men who pay to rape women are the pits.

Imogene · 05/07/2025 20:36

You can’t really blame the woman posting.
The thing is that my mum, as a single woman, lived in a building where one flat was occupied by a prostitute, whose ‘visitors’ at all hours included drug dealers & unsavoury types which made the flats unsafe for my mum and the other women who lived there.
This was in 2000 before the days of social media so they just reported the prostitute to the landlord who ended her tenancy (who then apparently moved to another block of flats before anyone feels too sorry for her).
The men who regularly visited the prostitute obviously just carried on seeing her in the new block & I imagine the cycle carried on.

Imogene · 05/07/2025 20:39

Ps year 2000 prostitute woman was an older English lady so not trafficked & did not seem to have a pimp but who knows. Her clients were middle aged to elderly some drunk / druggy types.

Wind your bloody neck in ffs

Where the hell have I laid blame at anyones doorstep?

Or do you just want a pop because Im not braying for blood and demanding she leaves the bastard straight off. When she already states they are separated and dont have sex?

Her post is more about her feelings of shame that her shit show of a marriage is now posted on SM for all to see

But hey, lets slag a sex worker earring money and a man rather then having an affair using her services then look at what is actually driving the post

his lack of sex has sent him to a sex worker

You were 100% saying the OP hadn't had enough sex with him and this caused him to go to a hooker. So yes, that is blaming her. If that wasn't what you meant to convey you worded it very badly and you might want to rephrase it instead of being outraged at me for commenting on it.

Your last paragraph makes no sense to me. No idea what you're trying to say there or what it has to do with what I said.

A man who pays money to rape women and doesn't care whether they've been trafficked is not a decent man! JFC!

Edited

It must be down so deep that nobody will ever find it.
Imagine being with a man who is a prick because you think that deep down, he actually isn't a prick. You'll never see the part of him that isn't a prick, but by God, you know it's in there somewhere!

As far as I understand it visiting a “escort “ is not illegal. Running a brothel is. Not sure how that factors in. I feel for you and your family, it is humiliating for you.
Pay no attention to “your husband is a demon posts.” That has no bearing on you. Enormous amounts of men use call girls.

Yes. Enormous amounts of men are disgusting, far too many. It's why I don't date.

MuckFusk · 05/07/2025 21:48

Foolsgold74 · 05/07/2025 19:33

Enormous amounts of men are low life scum who hate women and have zero regard for their health and well being and are happy to pay for access to their bodies.

Ding ding ding! This.

crazeekat · 05/07/2025 22:07

As much as it disgusts me I don’t think it is fair for this woman and any kids to be tarred with the same brush. The photo is out of order and this is the reason that so many fights, breakup and lies are made. Yes he was prob visiting a prostitute but his kids don’t need to be involved with this and they are the ones that suffer.

Yep I love being single, I get stared at and asked out by married men constantly and I feel so lucky I don’t have to worry about that, the poor women don’t have a clue. 99% are sleazy

Worker suggests that they are subject to employment law, legal rights, health and safety etc and this quite clearly isn't the case. Prostitute is far more accurate.

Ugh. Being hit on by married men is so gross.

'The woman posting on FB said she knows none of them live there and according to the OP they were seen seen arriving and leaving a known prostitute within the space of an hour. And the woman posting on FB has had support from other residents, according to the OP.'

It could be gossip, it could be malicious, it could be bullying. We don't know. This is not the way of doing things. There are official channels. What next a bag of dog shit through the letterbox that'll tell 'em!

Came back to see whether anyone had clarified the approved way of doing things and the official channels.

Nope? What a surprise. @Gloriia, please do educate us on the way of doing things when you want to discourage men from using prostitutes in your building of residence.

What would be the official channels? They've complained to the landlord, who doesn't care. They could report the brothel for 'profiting from immoral earnings' to the police - and perhaps they have - but the police have a very light-touch policy regarding sex workers, and it sounds like their owner runs them from a distance. In the same vein, it would be very difficult to establish tax fraud or money laundering, given the industrial manner of the women's deployment.

It's not yet a crime in the UK to use prostituted women. There is NO official channel to be explored here. There is, however, local media - which the residents seem to be using quite cleverly.

I can't believe how many PPs have said this 🤣🤣 A steady stream of men arriving on their own, no women or children in tow, at a block of flats housing a brothel, each man leaving after one hour.

Your Occam's Razor needs sharpening.

Came back to see if there were still some women trying to defend men who use prostitutes - sadly, there are. You're right. I think facebook woman and all the other residents who backed her is an absolute hero and I hope she keeps it up. Chances of legal action? Zero. The men will just try to ignore the fuss and find a different brothel.

what your saying every single man Who has entered that block of flats has gone to a prostitute
so if you lived in that block of flats and your dad come to visit you he would be photographed and put on Facebook as visiting prostitutes

nobody is disputing it not grim but the potential to get this wrong and the impact for the person she gets it wrong with is enormous

She didn't say "every single man". She said men who arrive alone and stay for one hour.

Gloriia · 06/07/2025 08:31

'nobody is disputing it not grim but the potential to get this wrong and the impact for the person she gets it wrong with is enormous'

Exactly. Just so inappropriate and dangerous to be taking pictures of men and posting with serious allegations.

Yes using sex workees is indeed very bad, they could well be trafficked but we really can't take the law into our own hands and post such serious and life damaging allegations. Sherlock on FB could get it wrong.

Fargo79 · 06/07/2025 08:03

Which again doesn’t prove anything who they went to and what for

hats off to the woman for trying to do something but you needed to do it right
rather than drag people into that you only presume and think they’ve been to a prostitute rather than know

Gloriia · 06/07/2025 09:48

'There is, however, local media - which the residents seem to be using quite cleverly'

Oh yes how very clever. No room for error is there with these vigilantes!

As an aside I can't imagine if anyone was using a sex worker they'd loiter outside for selfies. I bet they'd have hoods up and be in and out very quickly. Maybe some of these people actually live there or are visiting, how on earth do the snoops know?

This is a great response 😇But some women will do ANYTHING to protect men, even when those men are at no risk of anything at all. Literally nothing will happen to any one of these men, except their families may find out they use prostitutes.

But I sincerely hope the Facebook woman isn't being harassed and abused too much for trying to protect her children from grimy, sleazy, dangerous men.

Gloriia · 06/07/2025 09:57

'But I sincerely hope the Facebook woman isn't being harassed'

She's probably too busy harassing others to care. I wonder what her next sting will be, maybe alleged drug dealers? Anyone entering a block of flats then leaving is a crim.
