To think it's actually OK to recline your seat on a long haul flight?

I always thought it was just one of those things, but this poll seems to make out it's anti-social behaviour. And that hack is just batshit.

Flier shares 'best life hack' to stop passengers in front reclining their seat

Traveller shares her 'best life hack', involving a tub of Pringles, but is branded 'pathetic' and 'a horrible person'.

Saggy face emoji?
You mean the one with the hands up to the face, aka facepalm?

Oh, didn’t have my glasses on 😁

I expect an airline to get me to my destination safely, along with any checked luggage.

I do not expect any serious considerarion from other passengers, though obviously I expect we will all be polite and reasonable. I don't expect to be particularly comfortable in economy.

Recline if you like. I will wake you myself and ask you to put your seat up for meal service. I will recline my seat the moment the person in front of me does and I will put it upright for meal service if they do.

People getting in a twist about this baffles me. There are obviously good reasons to recline your seat. Go ahead and do that if you want. From the moment the seatbelt sign is off if you like. It's not rude. It's a function of the seat you purchased.

If you cannot handle a reclined seat, you should not be seated where that might happen.

No, the problem is YOURS. You will be the one complaining about your seat being knocked, not the mum & not the toddler. Hopefully moved on as well for everyone’s sanity.

Nope, it's your problem, but entitled parents often fail to see that.

Morgenrot25 · 05/07/2025 13:15

caffelattetogo · 05/07/2025 10:03

But with a parent with a child on their lap, the slightest movement is going to be felt if you recline on top of them, surely? It’s unreasonable to expect anyone not to need to move, stretch, go to the loo etc on a long flight.

Still not my problem.

Well if it’s not your problem, what would you have to complain about?

I have no problem with a slight recline during the day on a flight, but fully reclined (basically totally horizontal), during the day and when people are eating/drinking and CANNOT actually sit in their seats is selfish. I don’t have anything else to say on the matter.

What airlines do you fly with where recline makes you basically horizontal?

notimagain · 05/07/2025 14:08

Good question, FWIW I"ve certainly never seen that arrangement for economy or economy plus type seating.

I do know of flat bed type seats in business and First on some airlines but those cases the whole seat and cubicle is designed ro ensure the fully reclined seat doesn't impinge on the space belonging to adjacent seats...

saltinesandcoffeecups · 05/07/2025 14:28

In fairness, I was once sitting behind a seat that I believe was broken as it reclined far more than the one next to it and really was right in my lap. (I’m short so no knees to stop it.

I just tapped the man on the shoulder and said ‘excuse me sir, if you get any closer I’m going to have to ask that you marry me’ 😁. His buddy laughed who was sitting next to him and the guy did bring it up to the normal recline level. In the end I thanked him, everyone got a good laugh and that was that.

Aside from that I think FAs are going to hate this ‘hack’ it’s no different than that little clip thing that was being sold for awhile that prevented reclining. I think that was eventually banned. Now, anytime a seat doesn’t recline it’s going to be the flight attendants looking for pringles cans and water bottles.

This whole thread is so annoying if you are a recliner which you are allowed to be and you also happen to be a considerate person who thinks of others .
I would be inclined to not want to get into a confrontation with the passenger behind me, especially if they have a child, however, most of my friends wouldn't give the shiniest of shites , so I would be sat bolt upright and my friends would be🛏️.
There needs to a standard that everyone agrees to and not just the free-for-all that we have at present . It's like putting the outdoor smoking area right next to the dining area or children's play area - its just creating conflict for no good reason.

The only way to get everyone to agree is for the airline to make the final recline/no recline decision.

I don’t think they’ll ever stop reclining because flight durations can vary so much and they want to offer what comfort they can without affecting their profit. They can’t remove the recline function for short flights and have the recline function for longer flights because they need flexibility with the aircrafts.

Great question! I have asked upthread which airlines have these magical, reclining horizontally in economy, seats. SPOILER: there aren't any

Please can someone come on and clarify, then I won't need to shell out ££££ for business class next time we go long haul.

I'm not holding my breath.

i have not read the entire thread, where are the posts saying that seats recline horizontally? I don’t remember seeing them but I may well have missed them

I agree, it needs to be taken out of our hands and not just left up to the renegades - like giving people a choice whether or not to mask up in public during the pandemic is ridiculously futile - the selfish/inconsiderates always win.

I don’t think reclining is selfish or inconsiderate 🤷‍♀️. (Not even the super reclining guy I mentioned in a previous comment)

Just putting that out there…

As I said in my previous post, you are perfectly within your right to recline smoke in your own garden and not wear a mask in public but lots will see this as selfish - I understand there's a massive difference in all of those scenarios but it's a question of your own personal stance. And this creates conflict.

notimagain · 05/07/2025 15:22

Bit background in the link below, it expands on a point I made way back that there's a whole sub industry dedicated to seat/cabin design and might also explain in part why business and more especially First Class fares can be as steep as they sometimes are:

Yep, we’re taking an 18 hour plane journey in about 10 days. Too right, as soon as meal service is cleared I’ll be reclining as far back as possible. If the person behind feels that restricts their space, then they’re quite at liberty to recline too

100 same when we used to fly cattle class !
Business or premium economy now but if reverted back due to cost - you betcha that seat is going back every time

Lardychops · 05/07/2025 15:28

caffelattetogo · 05/07/2025 08:09

Surely if you reclined your seat onto a child (even of 18 months) on top of an adult in a pretty cramped seat pitch, you’d pretty much be touching the child with your seat, so would inevitably feel their every movement?

Even so deffo expect parents to manage that I absolutely do not expect to feel kids bashing my seat - although complaining about it several times did get me upgraded once which was ace !

Deedledee1976 · 05/07/2025 15:29

I only recline my seat if the person behind me has already reclined theirs.

Lardychops · 05/07/2025 15:29

SumUp · 05/07/2025 09:14

So why didn’t you recline your seat too to create more space for yourself?

or upgrade
Or don’t fly
