To think it's actually OK to recline your seat on a long haul flight?

I always thought it was just one of those things, but this poll seems to make out it's anti-social behaviour. And that hack is just batshit.

Best life hack to stop air passengers reclining their seat | Chester and District Standard

Flier shares 'best life hack' to stop passengers in front reclining their seat

Traveller shares her 'best life hack', involving a tub of Pringles, but is branded 'pathetic' and 'a horrible person'.

It’s anti social except at night

It’s the fucking worst actually - I fly a lot and am quite serene in airports etc, but this puts murder in my blood

Yep, we’re taking an 18 hour plane journey in about 10 days. Too right, as soon as meal service is cleared I’ll be reclining as far back as possible. If the person behind feels that restricts their space, then they’re quite at liberty to recline too

I might be getting up to go to the loo and accidentally dropping my open water bottle in your crotch. Sorry!!

Do you have feral kids too? Extra points for that.

itbemay1 · 04/07/2025 19:53

I was on a 2h BA flight recently and the guy in front reclined the seat!! My DH asked him to put it back up and he did but I couldn’t believe it. I don’t think seats should be able to recline on short haul. Yes to long haul as I’m guessing there’s a little bit more leg room.

Someone did this to me when I had a toddler on my knee..they didn't like it when my toddler kept knocking into the seat due to lack of room everything he moved. Think before you recline, if there's a toddler on a knee there will not be enough room to do it.

Sorry, but book your toddler their own seat & if they want to sit on your lap, sit sideways. It's easy enough, even with another in a sling. Your children are not other people's responsibility. Nor should you be allowing them to knock/hang off the seat in front.

Gymmum82 · 04/07/2025 19:53

I really don’t get this. If the person in front has reclined just recline yourself. Then you still got the same amount of space! If everyone reclines everyone has the same space still. It’s really not worth getting angry about. I have no issues reclining or with anyone else doing it regardless of time of day

MidnightPatrol · 04/07/2025 19:47

I’d say the flight dictates when is day and night time by when the lights are on / off and meals served actually.

Kind of, and people should not fully recline during meal times, but I don't think it's realistic to expect a person not to recline at all.

But people have paid for a seat that reclines. Your toddler should have had its own seat and after meals nobody should have what is behind them stop what they have paid for.

I’m the opposite. I’d rather nobody reclined and still everyone would have the same amount of space. And people can then get out to go to the toilet and use their tray if they want to.

Didn’t the toddler have their own seat ? Confused

The toddler wouldn't have done a 10 hour flight without cuddles on my knee

This is always my thought process too!

Plus, I've never been on a single long haul flight where the attendants haven't told everyone to put their seats upright at meal times.

Themomentsheknewshefkedup · 04/07/2025 19:57

It’s especially annoying if you have a lap infant too. I would have to ask them to move their seat back

No. If you want to recline then pay for business.

🤣 nope. There's no reason not to recline a seat in economy. That's why they gave the function!!

A toddler wouldn't sit in own seat fur a 20 hour flight, they need cuddles and interaction.

Elbowpatch · 04/07/2025 19:58

I only recline my seat if the person behind has reclined theirs.

No. If you want to recline then pay for business.

Or alternatively, if you want extra space and are going to moan if the person in front wants to recline then you book business.

TBF reclining seats exist in economy because they want people to drink too much and go to sleep and not give them any bother.

But if you need to work, it’s infuriating.

Well that is for you to sort from the seat next to them. No way should people who have spent £££ not be able to use what they have paid for.And if you want to do it in your seat you can comfort by reclining yourself.

Badatmostthings · 04/07/2025 20:02

At least have the courtesy to let the person behind you know you're about to recline. I nearly had my dinner on my lap due the person in front of me suddenly reclining. And please put your seat back up if you then bugger off for a leg stretch for half an hour.

Caspianberg · 04/07/2025 20:03

I find the seats really annoying reclined. I rarely sleep in flights, especially if it’s daytime flights I’m likely working or keeping child entertained, which is very awkward when I can’t use table as someone has decided to recline and sleep at 10am for 8hrs..
My child has own seat, but if the seat I front is reclined then it’s awkward to use table

SameOldMe · 04/07/2025 20:04

I think it's selfish to stop the person in front from reclining. We are on a night flight and the person behind but their knees up to stop me reclining, so I had an extremely uncomfortable journey. In the end i had to speak to the cabin crew so I could rest. Lots of huffs and puffs later they let me recline and I could sleep. Generally speaking recliners are only available on long haul that you have paid a LOT for, so of course you be able to use the facilities paid for.

Laserwho · 04/07/2025 19:57

Then break the journey up. Don't book a 20 hour flight with a toddler and if you do, book your toddler their own seat then use the space you have paid for, not the space others have booked & paid for.

Flupflup · 04/07/2025 20:05

I am flying long haul in a few months time to Australia.Have paid for extra leg room on all the flights. Too expensive for premium economy but hoping the extra £400 on economy will make a difference 🙏

It might be infuriating to you, but you've booked travel between A&B, not office space. Book business if you need more space.

This doesn't work though, because the very back seats don't recline.

Yes, undoubtedly, but your needs don't outweigh theirs.

it might be 10am to you, but it might be 3am for them. You might be working on the flight, they might need to sleep to deal with whatever on their arrival.

everyones needs are different, seats recline. People are allowed to use that function. If you fly alone, book a bulk head seat.
