Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

@Lioncub2020 there isn't contraception fails people all the time, and many have unpleasant side effects for different people.
I got pregnant on the pill and on the coil when I had my abortions. I'm currently on the implant, if I got pregnant tomorrow I would 100% have another abortion.

IShouldNotCoco · 03/07/2025 10:01

YANBU - I don’t think there is any excuse for people to have multiple abortions. It shouldn’t be used instead of contraception.

If she didn’t want people to discuss it then she should have kept her mouth shut about it.

I think while Lily may be a disturbed person (I don’t know) she has put this out there when she absolutely did not have to. I personally find her attitude and Miquita’s disgusting.

If pro choice doesn’t come with a but, then I guess I am not pro choice.

She didn't have to, but equally if she wants to talk about her life and experiences why shouldn't she - or anyone else for that matter?

Far, far better to have these debates in public and openly, than hiding things away for shame like in the past. Breaking the stigma of around choices like this can only be a good thing.

ThisWayLiesMadness · 03/07/2025 10:03

Her parents must be so proud.......

crumblingschools · 03/07/2025 10:04

Surely better to not get pregnant in the first place, abortion should be last resort. Yes better than 5 unwanted babies. 5 abortions to me would show someone is not in a great place and we should be doing things to help people to not get into that place in the first place.

There is a reason abortion counselling exists. You don’t get counselling for wearing a condom

Oh I agree, I think she absolutely can and probably should discuss it. I was just saying that because of that I don’t think we can have a go at OP for barging into someone’s personal/private business.

crumblingschools · 03/07/2025 10:06

@KateMiskin a bunch of cells with a heartbeat

funinthesun19 · 03/07/2025 10:06

Having 5 abortions just makes me think a woman has some big dark problems within herself to keep allowing this to happen to her body and to her mental health.

HairsprayBabe · 03/07/2025 10:06

@crumblingschools you don't have to have counselling to access an abortion, they offer it but you can still access care without it. For many people it is an easy choice with no hand wringing or trauma, it's just healthcare.

crumblingschools · 03/07/2025 10:09

@HairsprayBabe I know you don’t have to have counselling but it is there. It’s not offered if you buy condoms.

ScholesPanda · 03/07/2025 10:10

I don't understand the logic of an arguement that says 1 abortion is fine but 5 is abhorrent.

If you believe it's a medical procedure and a fetus doesn't enjoy separate person hood, then surely the number shouldn't matter? You wouldn't say it's ok to murder one person but not 5 would you?

Unless it's about policing Lily Allen's sex life of course

vovov · 03/07/2025 10:10

her comments also make abortion sound like it’s no big deal. It’s horrific and can have long term medical consequences. She absolutely shouldn’t have said it and I wonder whether she did it to be like Katie hopkins - getting money by saying awful stuff

Healthcare is using contraception, abortion should be the last resort as it can have serious repercussions if it goes wrong, like any medical procedure can. That this has to be explained to fully grown women in 2025 is gobsmacking.

HairsprayBabe · 03/07/2025 10:12

@Katiesaidthat carrying a pregnancy to term has far higher risks than an abortion, especially one done before 10 weeks. That this has to be explained to fully grown women in 2025 is gobsmacking.

RepoTheGeriatricOpera · 03/07/2025 10:12

If she was on the podcast crying and praying and asking for forgiveness there wouldn't be as much hate directed towards her.

It's because she's talking about her abortions without enough emotion.

God forbid that a woman access safe and legal medical procedures without the appropriate amount of guilt and shame.

Maybe they should start issuing public lashings alongside abortions, that might make the anti-choice crew happier.

TheAutumnCrow · 03/07/2025 10:12

So much misinformation on this thread.

PreetyinPurple · 03/07/2025 10:12

I won’t watch it because I think she’s an attention seeker anyway.
But I think it’s wrong to say you’ve had 5 abortions and not recognise that there is some trauma associated with that. Everyone I know who had them still has complex feelings about it, especially when they went on to have other children.

Abortion is meant to get women out of a bad situation. Any of us can end up in a bad situation once, twice. So it’s fine to have an abortion. But 5 times - then it starts to look like the situation is more of a choice than a combination of unfortunate circumstances.

blossoming56 · 03/07/2025 09:29

Of course it’s not of my business. I don’t know her, even if I did it’s none of my business. But she has gone public with something very topical and like it or not people will talk about it. I’m not judging, I don’t care about it enough to judge but it does open the floor for a discussion.

I am very happy that women have the choice and that she’s been able to safely have abortions in this country. But I do think there has to come a point for women to just think ok I’ll get myself (or my partner) on some reliable contraception so I don’t keep having to do this.

It's irrelevant what you think about her life. 🫣

If you use contraception and are not pregnant with an uwanted child in the first place you won´t be carrying any pregnancy to term will you? So your gotcha isn´t the gotcha you think it is. Also contraception is cheaper than abortion in every sense. Contraception all the way. This is 2025 not 1950.

The repercussions appear to be other women judging her, not sure why, perhaps it makes them feel better about their imperfect lives. 🤔

Google is your best friend. A friend of mine is infertile due to a botched abortion.

Who says that abortion is meant to get women out of a bad situation? Why do you think that is what it is for? And why do you feel qualified to judge what a bad situation is or how many we can find ourselves in one?
