Lily Allen ‘can’t remember’ how many abortions she’s had

Article in the Fail today about this.
I am pro choice but it did make me a bit uncomfortable. After a while a string of abortions - too many to remember - would surely leave its mark physically and emotionally not mention the cost on the NHS.
Everyone should have a choice but is there not an element of personal responsibility to just take precautions after the first few times?!

I'll start by saying that I am pro-choice. I used to provide abortion care and there would be questions over why a woman was returning for multiple terminations. There would be concerns around her current contraception regime and how it could be improved (is the method not working for her and if not, why not?), concerns around her safety (is she being coerced into pregnancy?). There would be concerns about her mental wellbeing both re the potential impact of multiple terminations (though some women find it significantly less traumatic than others), and in terms of the potential underlying causes for the repeated unplanned pregnancies.

How many times a woman accesses legally available healthcare is not for the general public to scold her and gossip about.

This.

I am similarly pro choice but there comes a time when concerns should be raised about her contraception choices (and std risk) as well as relationship concerns eg coersion into not using alternative methods of contraception/sexual abuse?

She's also a high profile young woman, some of whose fans will inevitably see this as a green light for being slack about contraception - remember in HUGE parts of the world yes America, I'm looking at you abortion is illegal so there needs to be a message about safe sex for more reasons than preventing pregnancy.

Gaslighting straw man argument

HairsprayBabe · 03/07/2025 10:28

@ItsAllLogic I got pregnant on the pill and on the coil when I had my abortions. I'm currently on the implant, and we double up with condoms too.

If I got pregnant tomorrow I would 100% have another abortion.

The only way to 100% avoid pregnancy is to have no sex at all, and I'm fairly sure that no one wants that.

Beeloux · 03/07/2025 10:30

Digdongdoo · 03/07/2025 10:24

Why 3? And if they can't afford private abortion number 4? What do you suppose should happen? Forced birth and an unwanted baby? Who is that better for?

We live in a country where we are very lucky to have free access to many forms of contraception.

I used to live in a country where contraception was extremely expensive and only available if you were married. An implant would cost well over £1000.

In my opinion, there is really no excuse to have multiple abortions when we have such easy access to contraception. Like it or not some, woman see abortion as a method of contraception.

She did also talk about the fact that she is on her 3rd IUD... so she absolutely did address contraception too.

Ontheedgeofit · 03/07/2025 10:31

To all those posters who are simply shutting down the OP and telling her to mind her own business… You do know what an anonymous Internet forum is for?

But once you're pregnant it's too late to use contraception. So at that point the choices are abortion or birth. So why do you think 3 is the magic number? Based upon what, and for whose benefit?

HairsprayBabe · 03/07/2025 10:31

@Beeloux are you just choosing to ignore all the people who get pregnant despite using contraception?

Flamingos89 · 03/07/2025 10:31

Absolutely the wrong message to be sending to young people! Abortion should be the LAST option if contraception fails - not THE option for contraception.

If she said this to her platform of followers - what a prick. I hate how people with no common sense are put in positions of influence

Beeloux · 03/07/2025 10:31

CurlewKate · 03/07/2025 10:24

I don’t believe you.

You don’t have to ☺️

Itsjustmonkeyssingingsongsmate · 03/07/2025 10:31

Can I just clarify something OP? Is your issue with her being allowed to have multiple terminations or is it with her showing off about it? Because these are entirely separate debates.

BeachPossum · 03/07/2025 10:32

As far as I'm concerned, abortion should be available to all who need and want one without restriction.

Lily Allen likes to make statements intended to shock and provoke, so I would take what she says with a pinch of salt. And I don't think unverified comments from one shock-jock style celebrity are any reason to worry about abortion policy in general. The overwhelming majority of women are not having countless numbers of abortions. If there are any who are, they should be treated compassionately, since it's highly suggestive of significant underlying difficulties.

ArmySurplusHamster · 03/07/2025 10:32

Katiesaidthat · 03/07/2025 10:13

If you use contraception and are not pregnant with an uwanted child in the first place you won´t be carrying any pregnancy to term will you? So your gotcha isn´t the gotcha you think it is. Also contraception is cheaper than abortion in every sense. Contraception all the way. This is 2025 not 1950.

You and logic aren’t close friends, I can tell.

If a pregnancy exists, termination statistically presents a lower risk to the woman than continued gestation and birth.

Itsagreatdaytosavelives · 03/07/2025 08:12

why read the daily mail for your news?

you do you

not my business

She was giving an interview when she said it, so it's all over the media. Even here in the USA. She and the interviewer had quite "the talk" and it was pretty disgusting and was about other things also. Not just her abortion count.

@Beeloux are you just choosing to ignore all the people who get pregnant despite using contraception?

If you read my post, I literally said I have fell pregnant on the pill. Hence I went on the implant to not have another unplanned pregnancy.

Realistically, what percentage of abortions occur when a woman is on the coil or implant? Of course it does happen but I can imagine it’s a very small percentage.

TesChique · 03/07/2025 10:34

You dont get to be pro choice but also judge how that choice is used.

Wait, this is mumsnet, home of the "your body your choice unless I dont agree with it" crew! Of course you do!

On what planet would you think something like this is reasonable to have an AIBU natter about it.

you didn’t need to mention her name.

This is someone’s life.

Edited

Then Lily Allen should have kept her big mouth shut and not announced her lack of memory of how many abortions she has had to the world during an interview. Along with some of the other shite she said.

You’re thinking of how many martinis to have at lunch.

Usernamenotavailable19 · 03/07/2025 10:36

ExtraOnions · 03/07/2025 08:19

Not your body, not your business

Then why did she say it out loud in public?

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 03/07/2025 10:36

I don’t understand why she felt the need to go public about this - unless she just wanted to be controversial.

cowpattern · 03/07/2025 10:36

Her body, her choice. End off.

I'll never understand why anyone has an opinion on what other people choose to do with their bodies.

CreationNat1on · 03/07/2025 10:36

I don't think she was BRAGGING about it, just talking about it. Those particular reckless choices seem to have been in the past, when she was a teenager and in her 20s.

People love to judge.

andthat · 03/07/2025 10:37

Morgenrot25 · 03/07/2025 10:20

According to your judgemental approach perhaps. It's nothing to do with you though.

@Morgenrot25 What a ridiculous come back.

The PP can have any opinion she wants… judgemental or otherwise….about an article in the media related to a public figure, where that public figure has willingly spoken about her private life.
