Gosh, imagine having human beings in charge!

I'm enjoying (if that's the right world) having leaders who will admit they don't always get it right and take steps to change things rather than digging in their heels. Also people who care enough to cry over it.

I mean, I don’t disagree with your sentiment entirely of course. But I would hazard a guess that the majority of the electorate want to feel like their politicians have control and show confidence.

So out of her depth in that role. As is two tier.

Agree - so worried for the future of the country.

Solaire18381 · 02/07/2025 13:00

She seems to be very unpopular. Has she made any decisions people have been happy about yet? Looks like she's about to p*ss more people off, according to Martin Lewis, soon.

Jellycatspyjamas · 02/07/2025 12:55

e.g. taking away the winter fuel allowance - first announcement for the new government - saved a pittance and was terrible optics impacting on those just above pension credit - they could easily taken it away from higher rate taxpayers - much more acceptable

You realise higher rate tax payers means anyone earning above £43k in Scotland - hardly earning a huge salary.

Well the whole point is that salary shouldnt be relevant, as in you can't claim WFA until you're pensionable age anyway.
If you've retired and still have more than £43k of income coming in every year you can definitely afford to heat your own house!

Jellycatspyjamas · 02/07/2025 13:00

AInightingale · 02/07/2025 12:58

Well on a human level that's dreadful and I'm sorry for her, but the Chancellor crying isn't something I want to see. Reeves could resign and resign her seat tomorrow and she'd still have wealth and a very generous pension. I'm more worried about what this means for the rest of us.

Well the rest of us will pay ever more taxes to cover the cost of a high welfare bill that everyone knows is out of control but no one wants to realistically deal with - at least not if it affects them.

Piknik · 02/07/2025 13:01

None of them are fit for purpose
But it's not as though there is a suitable candidate waiting in the wings.
There is nobody. Literally not one person that I would have any confidence in.

And that is across the board. Not just the Labour Party.

We are fucked and in real danger of a Reform government in the next few years who, with their unpalatable lineup and politics and also going to discover that there is no money tree in the garden of Number 10. At this point, we'll be even more financially fucked and be living in a country divided by hate.

Honesty never felt so much despair before.

Brefugee · 02/07/2025 12:54

if you look at video clips, you can see the tear trickle out.

As for pp asking how to stop it, practice. It is hard (I'm an awful cry-at-the-drop-of-a-hatter) you have to make your mind go elsewhere.

I feel as unmoved by this as i feel about Thatcher crying in the car taking her from Number 10. Not as triumphant this time, but absolutely unmoved.

Edited

Practice hasn't helped so far!!

thinking about other things hasn't helped..

pressing my tongue to the roof of my mouth hasn't helped....

EasternStandard · 02/07/2025 13:02

The clip is now in the press. My god she looks distressed. On camera in front of everyone.

I think she needs time out or something for mh

Was she crying? She looked more like she hadn’t slept all night. No news outlets reporting on this that I can see

It’s all over the news

The previous poster said to take it from higher tax payers, they didn’t specify take it from pensioners who are also higher tax payers.

Wheezygonzalez · 02/07/2025 13:02

As much as I have empathy for her on a human level, the saying ‘the dildo of consequences never comes lubed’ is fitting here.

Politically she’s always been out of her depth and to be honest I’m fed up of blatantly incompetent people running this country.

If we want change, people in such positions need to face the consequences of their decisions and actions, so does she.

SummerFrog25 · 02/07/2025 13:02

ImNunTheWiser · 02/07/2025 12:58

Kemi Badenoch:

She is a human shield for his incompetence

I think she's correct.

Might just be the first thing I've agreed with out of that woman's mouth.

luckylavender · 02/07/2025 13:03

3luckystars · 02/07/2025 12:43

I think I would keel over first and get carted out before I’d let the tears out in front of people at work

Not everyone has your control clearly. Or maybe you’ve never been in the eye of a media storm. Horrible

She’s visibly crying

You were watching a different PMQs to me.

I watched it all apart from the first 5 minutes and didn't see any tears.

She wasn't crying.

She looks like she's not slept for days but neither has much of the SE because of the heat.

Kemi said she looked 'miserable' at which point she was grinning like a Cheshire cat.

The pp wasn’t. You need to watch again. It’s in the press.

GasPanic · 02/07/2025 13:04

Maybe ask some people who were having their PIPs and winter fuel benefits taken away and see whether they felt like crying.

Or parents struggling to find VAT on school bills desperately trying to do the best for their kids.

I feel sorry for her. But she isn't up to the job, plain and simple. It's no shame to admit that, but when you do you need to go.

Definitelly crying, and trying to hold back more crying. Journos on Times Radio saying she'll likely be gone by the end of today.

True. But this is on Starmer.

If she was it was in the first few (5) minutes as I missed those.

alexalisten · 02/07/2025 13:06

It's the stress, exhaustion and heat of the last few days I think it would get to anyone. The irony though if she has a mental breakdown and realises how debilitating poor mental health can be.

somewhereintheworld · 02/07/2025 13:06

She's only human. We don't know why she was crying. She might have had some really bad family news. Let's show some compassion for her.

Tartantotty · 02/07/2025 13:06

Feel very sorry for her, despite her ineptitude as chancellor. She seems to be heading for a breakdown and, if I were her, I'd resign now.

Westminster in an out of date archaic bear pit. The braying is ridiculous. At least our Parliament up here in Scotland is more civilised in the way it conducts its business.

Even if she wasn't (she was), the fact it's being reported like that means she is definitely gone now. This is her Harriet Jones, Don't You Think She Looks Tired moment. The real culprit remains in post though, for now.

MoominUnderWater · 02/07/2025 13:07

If I was he I’d about resign. She was given a job to do and Starmer has ripped all her decisions up and made her look like an idiot. I agree she doesn’t make these decision on her own and if Starmer didn’t like them he should have said so before they were made public. Not have a knee jerk reaction to poor public and media reaction and do an about turn due the the pressure and throw her under the bus. I’d be bloody furious if I was her.

because where do they go from here? Massive black hole in finances so now there will need to be big tax rises. Brilliant. Cost of living crisis, everything’s expensive and now more tax.

PepsiForEva · 02/07/2025 13:07

I feel human sympathy yes for her. God, I am a total mess with anxiety when I stuff up in a minor way- she has stuffed up in a major way, so I feel for her as to how bad she must feel.

But I fucking hate her policies. And some which have really hurt my family and more to come I expect.
