Name something unhygienic/disgusting but people do it

I start off:
. Holding money their mouths. It’s mainly an elderly person thing. Friends working in retail see this often. Even in mask wearing days, customers lowered masks to do this, yet denied it.
. Going to the toilet and not flushing
. Washing chicken out. People don’t realise that this can spray bacteria around. Cooking it properly will kill bacteria.
. Coughing without covering mouth. Even with Covid, people are still doing this.
. Not washing hands after using loo. In public toilets, I use hand sanitiser as seen people from certain cultures spit and mums letting their toddler DS to wee in the basins.
. On planes, people walking barefooted especially in toilets. With the quick turnaround of planes, the staff can’t clean everywhere

I think I wash my chicken just to upset people on Mumsnet 😄

Having dirty animals living in their homes with them.

Like goats, or something? Or do we mean just standard pets 😂

That's the only reason I have tattoos

stick other people’s genitals in their mouths.

Wait, we're supposed to put our own in our mouths, not other people's?! 😱🤣🤣

I work in retail, and our bosses said during covid and still to this day, if we serve customers with money in their mouths we can refuse to take it. I’ve had to do this on a few occasions, you’d think they’d apologise or find a different note, but no they double down on it. They argue with you, they become all entitled going on about “legal tender” which is a myth anyway. Or have the cheek to call the staff rude.

My friends who work in retail - their managers will back them 100% if any customer demands to speak to a manager after my friends and their colleagues refuse to take their money as been in their mouths. As well as money, customers hold coupons, lottery tickets/slips, scratchcards and receipts (if wanting a refund/exchange) - in their mouths.

Asking - are these customers that do this at your work, elderly? They are the rude ones, not the staff.

Are you just 'elderly' bashing OP, you've mentioned it several times now.

I'm always put off having an ice cream from street vendors (or from some shops) because they don't wash the scoop in running water. They dip it into a basin of cloudy, ice-creamy water...and surely that can't be hygienic?

That's how a relative discovered that her DD has an allergy. She had an ice cream and it must be something on another ice cream that got into the container of water. Her lips and eyes went very swollen. Had some tests and found she's allergic to a food colouring.

Thank goodness most people have clean animals

Kd96 · 02/07/2025 16:56

Phones in bras.. boob sweat against your face on the phone 🤢

Skimpy thongs with see-through cycle shorts and those crop top bra thingys with socks sliders, especially on the school run 😬

Leaving litter on beaches, green spaces.. ANYWHERE that's not a bin. Take it home people it's not hard!

Hoodies in 30° heat

Deodorant avoiders

People leaving their toenail clippings laying around

Snot in jumper wipers

AlertEagle · 02/07/2025 16:58

Not changing bed sheets on a weekly basis.

licking their finger when flipping newspapers pages.

not washing hands after using the loo.

smacking their lips

Having dirty humans and children in homes living with them.

Pinkrabitt · 02/07/2025 17:01

Licking fingers at the table - yuck!
Also licking fingers to turn a page.
Eating snot.
Washing meat.
Letting dogs lick faces.
Not washing hands when getting home, especially if having been on public transport.
People who never change their washing up sponge.
Crusted up dirty taps.

I've trained my cat not to sit on kitchen counters. Water pistols are very useful for this!

Pinkrabitt · 02/07/2025 17:01

Oh and wearing outdoor shoes in the house.

Bubblebubblepoppop · 02/07/2025 17:02

Using a washing up bowl. I don't get it.

SquishedMallow · 02/07/2025 17:02

Picking nose and eating it.
Scratching fanjo or bum and then sniffing fingers.

Delilatoday · 02/07/2025 17:04

This thread is horrible but I can't stop reading it 😂

Many already mentioned bad habits give me the ick but now I fear my eyes will be scanning passengers on my daily bus or train journeys like never before. I'll add one which I saw yesterday. A smartly dressed human male reading his book while picking at a spot or scab on his face.

Urgh 😕

How is smacking your lips unhygienic?

Topsy44 · 02/07/2025 17:06

Licking a finger to turn pages in a book or count money. This irritates me SO much!!

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/07/2025 17:06

Bubblebubblepoppop · 02/07/2025 17:02

Using a washing up bowl. I don't get it.

I presume so you can put your things waiting to be washed in the washing up bowl, so that if you need to use the sink to drain pasta, rinse vegetables, or wash your hands you just lift the bowl and its contents out of the sink first. Can also leave things to soak without having the entire sink out of action. Probably not an issue if you have a dishwasher, but not everyone does.

ManchesterLu · 02/07/2025 17:07

It really annoys me, because proper hygiene could pretty much complete eradicate airborne viruses!

Not washing hands properly and covering mouth is so simple, but changing habits would be so effective!

🤣🤣🤣🤣

understandable!!

That was my fav reaction! Not much chance of getting an angry face one then!!

Nah. I think MNHQ were inundated with reports that they'll be thinking very carefully before adding any new ones & they didn't want to add 'negative' ones before all that.

i just wish (now that we have them) they were public not private.

Chazbots · 02/07/2025 17:16

Sat here, in the dog bed, with the dog licking me...my microbiome is in great condition, in part due to said dog (who are wormed regularly).

SapphireSeptember · 02/07/2025 17:18

caringcarer · 02/07/2025 10:29

Use cutlery the family eats from to take cat or dog food from a tin.

Why? Cat and dog food is safe for human consumption, tinned especially, because it's been boiled the same as anything else in a tin (hopefully not in raw sewage though. I remember being told about a botulism epidemic caused by that.)

Catladywithoutacat · 02/07/2025 17:18

Touching money then touching food
