Name something unhygienic/disgusting but people do it

I start off:
. Holding money their mouths. It’s mainly an elderly person thing. Friends working in retail see this often. Even in mask wearing days, customers lowered masks to do this, yet denied it.
. Going to the toilet and not flushing
. Washing chicken out. People don’t realise that this can spray bacteria around. Cooking it properly will kill bacteria.
. Coughing without covering mouth. Even with Covid, people are still doing this.
. Not washing hands after using loo. In public toilets, I use hand sanitiser as seen people from certain cultures spit and mums letting their toddler DS to wee in the basins.
. On planes, people walking barefooted especially in toilets. With the quick turnaround of planes, the staff can’t clean everywhere

The thinking is that the TV remote control is one of the dirtiest things in an average hotel room, because it never gets wiped or cleaned in any way. There was an experiment that I read about (perhaps a clickbait urban myth) which found that the remote control was as unhygienic as the loo, with the hand germs of all the previous guests, some of whom will have disgusting personal hygiene. I assume this poster has applied the same logic to the light switch, although I don't see why that can't be given a wipe down during the room cleaning.

I stayed in a hotel for the first time in about 20 years couple of weeks ago and I took handwipes with me to wipe over the remote control especially after reading threads on here about hotel cleanliness in the rooms and what people allegedly get up to.

I also boiled the kettle three times before using it and took my own mug and spoon too. 😂

@deeahgwitch
All bakery items are individually bagged or in containers where I live (in the US). I've heard British people in my local supermarket exclaiming about typically wasteful Americans and their addiction to plastic. I'd prefer the bagged loaf or individually wrapped muffin (especially the muffin!) every time over one that's been squeezed by dirty hands, or coughed on.

I didn’t know that about the US @mathanxiety
I’m in Ireland (Irish like you) and it drives me bonkers to see uncovered baked goods on display.
Add wasps drawn to the sugar now it’s summer to the coughs, the splutters, the dirty hand and the flies !!!
I just don’t understand why it’s allowed.

The answer surely is paper bags which used to be traditional for bakeries - more hygienic but also not endless single use plastic which I also find horrifying when in the US (see also hotel buffers there that use plastic plates that go in landfill)

deeahgwitch · 03/07/2025 08:35

But wouldn’t a paper bag hide the products unless they had a plastic “window” @Radra
I can understand shops wanting to display the goods to entice you to buy them.
Lidl which is fairly local keep their baked goods in glass cabinets. My local Tesco and the garage forecourt shops nearby don’t.

Deepf60 · 03/07/2025 08:42

Ha...oral sex is awesome...try it it's not disgusting if you both enjoy it.

I have seen some bakeries have one on display under glass and then the others wrapped in paper behind which works - I guess you could also do pictures

the USA’s use of disposable stuff leaves a lot to be desired

a washable plastic cover over the muffins , tongs and a paper bag should be enough

tumblingdowntherabbithole · 02/07/2025 09:36

You do realise rats and birds piss and shit all over shopping trolleys, right?

I think some kids shoes are the least of your problems there 🤣

Maybe if rats are pissing and shitting in the trolley then it’s the last place you should put your little darling cherub!

deeahgwitch · 03/07/2025 09:28

I agree @suburburban

Denimrules · 03/07/2025 09:48

Re walking around barefoot on planes. Aside even from hygiene issues, I'd be wearing my flight socks and I don't usually take my comfy trainers off either

RaraRachael · 03/07/2025 10:12

I've never seen anyone going around barefoot on a plane and would be pretty annoyed if I had to put up with someone's smelly bare feet in the seat next to me.

ladeedarrrmmy · 03/07/2025 10:17

Shoes in the house. I want to scream when people enter my house with shoes on. Or ask if they need to take them off which makes me feel awkward saying yes.

Ah, I see the "sex is disgusting" MN brigade is out early today.

I'll go out on a limb here - I have an idea that may have been what's known as a 'humorous' remark.

The13thFairy · 03/07/2025 14:56

Alpacahacker · 02/07/2025 11:02

I wouldn’t say 66 is elderly it’s the generation above you that I have generally seen as prolific tissue carriers! It’s obviously not all older people either but I’ve not seen younger people doing this at all 🤷‍♀️

If there are no bins nearby, and your clothes have no pockets, what should you do with a used tissue?

The ones I’ve seen haven’t just been temporarily carrying tissues. It’s a permanent feature of the outfit.

They quite often have tassells of shit there. Klingons I believe they're called.

This tickled me😂

landlordhell · 02/07/2025 17:21

Never do this. Have not got any nasty illnesses.

good for you, as a microbiologist I just can’t do it.

JHound · 04/07/2025 11:57

Idontjetwashthefucker · 02/07/2025 13:37

Why do you need to wash it though?

To clean it.

limescale · 04/07/2025 11:58

JHound · 04/07/2025 11:57

To clean it.

Cooking it gets rid of any nasties. Washing it risks distributing nasties over your kitchen. Cooking it means you don't need to worry about disinfecting.

Loveduppenguin · 04/07/2025 12:32

@JHound…what are you washing your checking with? And what exactly are you washing off?

ComtesseDeSpair · 04/07/2025 12:44

Loveduppenguin · 04/07/2025 12:32

As I said above, I think some people hear “washing chicken” and imagine it being held under the running tap with water splashing everywhere. When people say they wash meat, they don’t generally mean that, and they don’t believe they’re doing it to kill bacteria. They usually have a designated bowl which they use a mixture of water, lemon juice and vinegar in to rinse the meat thoroughly to remove the slimy albumen proteins and all the residual bits that don’t get cleaned off during processing, the chicken cavity, before seasoning / stuffing it. It’s no different to marinading and seasoning raw meat in a bowl or container. You practice the same kitchen hygiene as with that.

But JHound is saying she is washing it to clean it. And in the context of this thread, I don't think anyone thinks rinsing the meat as you describe is disgusting.

Washing / cleaning meat is just a turn of phrase. People who do it, all know exactly what we mean by washing / cleaning meat - it’s that. If you’re not from a cultural background where it’s totally commonplace though, I can see how the confusion and thinking it’s done under a splashy tap / misconstruing that it’s about germphobes thinking it removes bacteria arises.

RaraRachael · 04/07/2025 20:45

My mother always washed a whole chicken under a running tap. When I asked her why she did it, she said it was because her mother always did the same.

It was the same with many of the daft things she did around the house.
