He's in a separate bedroom. Flithy f**ker not changed his bed for 4 weeks, so this morning I asked him if he was thinking of changing his sheets as he's been in them for 4 weeks.....he doesn't have a clue how long they've been on....If I had not mentioned it, I wonder how long he'd have kept them on.
He's in our son's room and he's coming back end of July so have ordered some nice new bedding for him 😄

Unless he shits or pisses the bed it's not that big a deal.

get off your high horse.

Are you the OPs husband or just plain manky?

My bathroom is a cave (literally, due to the layout of my house) so towels just don't dry in there and start to smell really quickly. But regardless of that, towels start to smell after a few days because that's what happens when something repeatedly gets wet and then dries slowly.

In summer I throw mine in the outdoor line most days (love the line dried freshness), in winter (unless it's a nice day) they mostly stay on the heated towel rail. or on an airer in other seasons when the heating isn't on.

When I lived at home we used to put them
on the bannister (just outside the bathroom) or on rails in the airing cupboard (we each had our own coloured set of towels)

Still not offering an opinion re water shortage and state of the planet then? Or any actual evidence that over washing does anything other than allow some a false position of superiority based on ‘cleanliness’ but no evidence on health.

This thread is so depressing. We are in a heatwave which most evidence suggests is part of planet warming due to human activity from over consumption. Using the amount of water we use for over washing activities is so selfish. I am assuming most on here have children. This is the planet we are gifting them.

Still not saying how often you wash your tea towels then?

JHound · 01/07/2025 17:33

Shrugs.

I am sure I keep my sheets on for that length of time. You aren’t sleeping in them so let that be his issue.

Zov · 01/07/2025 17:03

Do you get very dirty and grubby in your day to day life, and don't shower often? That's the only reason you should be always be changing your sheets weekly all year round.

Edited

No it's not, but unlike you my bar is higher than when the sheets are 'icky or greasy' I'm 55 I've had men in my life that probably weren't as fussy as me, but I've still never encountered sheets that were 'icky or greasy' 🤮

Thanks everyone for your replies - you gotta love MN for a mixed bag of responses!
Ok will leave skanky man to his own bed stripping schedule 😆(note to self to boil wash bedding when it does materialise....)

Why are YOU boil washing them? Surely he can wash HIS bedding.

I change my sheets once a month, there is no need to do it more often. What do you think they did in the olden days before washing machines

Stank mostly!

once a month in any weather 🤮 but in this weather (in the SE anyway) 🤢🤮🤮

Who said anything about ‘icky or greasy’? Did I miss a post? Because you’ve presented it as a quote.

And yet, using soap and water for washing clothing and bodies resulted in improved health for millions in Britain as public health concerns motivated engineers and administrators to act on appalling infant mortality rates and regular outbreaks of scabies and other diseases. Use of water (and soap) for keeping oneself and one's bedding and clothing clean is perfectly appropriate.

Would you oppose efforts to provide clean drinking water and water for washing, cleaning, and cooking in parts of the world where people struggle with access?

Good Lord are you for real? Nowhere have I ever said that there is no public and personal Heath benefit to cleanliness and detergent. I have said that over washing has no health benefit. Show me any evidence that sets out that cleaning towels daily/weekly improves health outcomes. On the flip side, there is plenty of evidence that shows our high use of water is having detrimental impacts on the planet.

It is really depressing how few people seem to give a shit about the environment on this thread. It is one thing to make a poor choice yourself, pretty much all of us in the west are over using resources and I definitely include myself in that category. But to then level insults at others (‘grim’ ‘disgusting’ are just a few from this thread) for making a better choice than you that actually helps support the planet you live on is really sad.

Yeah, fortnightly is enough (unless as I said, it's verrrrry warm,) or you have had a sickness bug/D & V bug, or been quite ill and have sweated a lot, or got vom on your sheets (or had a period leakage!) I am doing ours weekly over this past couple of months though because it's been very warm. Do them fortnightly usually. Occasionally I slip/go past the 2 weeks, and realise it when the sheets start to feel a bit icky/greasy! 😬

@cardibach

yes, quoted from here! Different post , but same poster I quoted

RobertaFirmino · 01/07/2025 17:48

Sheets changed weekly, towels changed every couple of days. I do plenty of other things to save water including Navy showers, stripwashes, a water butt for the plants and have not produced any more water users.

Whippetlovely · 01/07/2025 17:52

I'm not a clean freak by any means but my bedding is cleaned every week. 4 weeks in this heat is gross.

Are you normal? You should absolutely change your sheets on a weekly basis

Same here. Clean bedding is such a pleasure.

We are not going to run out of water. Ever. Get a grip.

Apologies then! But it seems unlikely they actually get like that after 2 weeks…mine certainly don’t.

I change ours weekly-our German Shepherd sleeps on it so less often it would be smelling like a kennel….

Discofish · 01/07/2025 18:00

If my husband was sleeping in a separate room I wouldn't give shit how long he left his sheets. So long as mine were nice and clean.

Fair. I don’t let my cat into my room so don’t have that issue.

Rewis · 01/07/2025 18:04

I almost felt a pang but then I realised I'm very gross in MN standards.

Cabinetbat23 · 01/07/2025 18:04

london111 · 01/07/2025 14:52

One a month. I am clean when I come out of the shower, dead skin cells having being rubbed off and washed away in the shower.

any comment on the more important point on water usage and the state of the planet? And that there is zero scientific evidence that washing sheets/towels weekly makes one iota of difference to your health?

😱

Whippetlovely · 01/07/2025 18:07

It's true that there is cause for alarm, but to understand the problem people need to read behind the headlines to understand one little fact: There is no water shortage.

Our planet is not running out of water, nor is it losing water. There's about 360 quintillion gallons of water on the planet, and it's not going anywhere except in a circle. Earth's hydrologic cycle is a closed system, and the process is as old as time: evaporation, condensation, precipitation, infiltration, and so on. In fact, there is probably more liquid water on Earth than there was just a few decades ago, due in part to global warming and melting polar ice caps. From live science. Stop scare mongering. By all means dont deliberately waste water if it helps with your saviour complex. Most people don't leave the tap running when brushing teeth ect but washing bedding once a week is not wasting water it's called not being skanky.

tommyhoundmum · 01/07/2025 18:21

I got round the struggle with large duvet covers by buying a single bed.

DorothyandtheWizard · 01/07/2025 18:26

MN is an eye opener.
I've never known such a filthy lot!

We both shower in the morning and before bed.
The sheets are changed every week.

Everyone sweats overnight and it's still sweat even if it's clean sweat!

Towels sometimes twice a week, especially if one of us has a 3rd shower during the day after sport etc.
