To ask if you have a fan on right now?

Do you always have the fan on, or the window open at night? We can’t really open our bedroom window so that’s not a choice and the fan is so noisy!

Windows open, not hot enough for a fan.

Are you on the European continent somewhere?

No we’re in the UK, but the house has a lot of glass & it absorbs the heat (it definitely helps save on heating bills in the winter)

This might sound totally pathetic but aren't you all worried about intruders with all these windows open (fyi I'm very paranoid about burglary and listen to way too much true crime), I can't sleep with windows open.

No, not at all. I don’t live in a particularly high crime area. Sometimes in the morning I realise I’ve left the front door unlocked 😂.

I listen to loads of true crime, but I think that sort of intruder crime is still pretty low. I’m not worried at all

Downstairs windows are put in locked position overnight as they look shut from the outside. The upstairs window over the bay is also in locked position. The others used to be wide open (pre cat) as you would need a very noisy ladder to access them. Go look outside your house and think how you would access any window - a flat roof or wall nearby, or maybe a drainpipe with lots of possible footholds, or just a blank wall that would need a ladder? Make a judgement from that.

Windows open, I need fresh air to sleep well. Hate any kind of fan, they just blow hot air around. I can’t sleep with air con on either, it gives me a really bad headache.

Caligirl80 · 30/06/2025 09:07

Normally don't use a fan, but in this heat it's definitely necessary. My dog enjoys it too, lol! she lays at the end of the bed with her tummy in the direction of the cool air, bless her!

I definitely miss ceiling fans when the weather gets grottily hot like this - used to have them when I lived overseas and they were great for keeping the air moving/feeling cooler, without creating much noise.

For those having issues with fan noise: there are lot of options out there for fans that aren't horribly noisy. A lot of stores list the noise levels. I absolutely loathe "noise" when I am sleeping, but find the white noise from the fan is actually rather soothing.

mangoglow · 30/06/2025 09:09

I don't but on hottest nights I could do with one. I suspect if things continue like this air-conditioning will become a thing in this country. Not what the planet needs mind you but people will be so uncomfortable in the rising temps and vulnerable people will be at risk so it is kind of inevitable.

Goody2ShoesAndTheFilthyBeast · 30/06/2025 09:09

I have 2 fans on at night. They are quiet and the hum is like that white noise that helps you sleep.

May be that you are getting dehydrated, hence the headache. Aircon can dry out the air. If you would prefer to use the AC then you can get yourself a humidifier - you just put it near your head when you sleep and you should find it moistens the air. Just be careful in hot weather, though, that you are using clean water (boiled if you don't buy it ) designed for humidifiers, that you are cleaning the machine regularly, and that you aren't causing mold to grow.

Also drink more water if you are using an AC unit. They will dry you out.

At night? Yes to fan on and window open at night. In this weather, we keep curtains/blinds and windows closed during the day, to keep the house as cool as possible. Then open them up at night, once the sun has gone down and the air outside is cooler than the air inside.

BalladOfBarryAndFreda · 30/06/2025 09:17

I hate aircon too @EvilDJ, massive migraine trigger due to dehydration. I am on prescription medication which affects my kidneys and makes me more prone to dehydration and renal damage, so I have to be very careful in hot weather or doing anything that causes excess fluid loss. I take rehydration salts and drink a lot of water.

Thepeopleversuswork · 30/06/2025 09:22

Fans on in all the bedrooms. I normally don't like any background noise when I sleep (need silence) but I can't sleep without one in this heat. I've become quite accustomed to the gentle hum my fan makes and quite enjoy it now.

I try to do this, windows and curtains/blinds closed between about 9.30am and 7.30pm (ideally) but literally no one else in my house complies, so it's a losing battle. Teen DD whinges it's too dark and DH doesn't like it because he hasn't heard it's a good idea so therefore it can't be

A mini USB one on my bedside table, but that’s because I’m in hospital and it’s unbearably warm in here. I don’t own a big fan - just the mini one which is a handheld / clip-on one I keep in my bag for public transport. It was sheer luck that it happened to be in my bag when I was admitted.

Livpool · 30/06/2025 15:52

I have a fan on overnight. I don’t have a window open as I live on a busy road

Allseeingallknowing · 30/06/2025 15:53

2 fans!

AlternativeView · 30/06/2025 15:54

Yes.
My fan is small and not very noisy

I’ve not got this actual one, but bought it for a friend and she says it’s great. I bought mine abroad in a outdoor camping shop and it’s so good

We leave the window open year round and have the ceiling fan switched on in the summer. We both have cooling blankets to use as well.
