I’m probably being a prude but…

…what is the deal with teenage girls running around basically naked these days?

Last week, I was driving down the road near a secondary school at letting out time and I must have seen about 5 girls’ actual bum cheeks as they were leaving school. Like, we all rolled our skirts up fairly short at school, but this was actually full knickers and bums on display… one girl was wearing a thong so it was just her whole bum on show.

Then, I was on the beach today (we live near the sea) with my two primary school aged sons and there were a group of maybe 13-14 year old girls, they were very young, more than half of whom were in thong bikinis. They spent most of the time on the beach doing a photoshoot, predominantly photos of them from behind looking out to sea, presumably for social media?!

I know teenagers have always been teenagers, but I’m pretty sure underage girls weren’t wearing thong bikinis on the beach when I was that age 😳

I could see other families on the beach felt uncomfortable with it too.

Do their parents know? Is this just how teenagers dress these days?

So someone tells you about their own horrific abuse incident to highlight how clothing doesn't make a difference and you call them naive?!

I should have made myself more clear, I was rushing.

Apologies to yourself and @Thisshirtisonfire

I meant that this poster cutting tights into thigh high stockings does not compare with today's girls in thongs.

And I’m not taking about rape, I’m talking about young teenagers being overly sexualised through patriarchal beauty standards that tell them walking about with their arse on show is a good idea.

Well you were taking about safeguarding girls and teaching them how to be safe and minimising the risk and also you were talking about pedophiles which suggests you were talking about rape.

You've clearly never been to a gay club or a Pride event then, or a city where there is a large gay community on a Friday or Saturday night.

It's not a new thing either, I can remember seeing guys in incredibly short shorts at venues like the London Apprentice and the Vauxhall Tavern back in the early 80s.

But that's adult men.

A lot of posters seem to be getting children and adults mixed up!

What I find wild is how no one wears bras in public anymore! Probably prudish, but everywhere now I see nipple outlines or sheer tops with no bra or cami tops underneath where you can see everything - i.e - Gracie Abrams at Glastonbury watching Charli XCX! I don't get it?!

If my tits were still the pert things that they were 40 or 50 years ago, I certainly wouldn't be wearing a bra in this weather. And years ago, I definitely didn't wear bras in hot weather, they're far too clammy and uncomfortable.

If people are shocked by the mere outline of a nipple, something men and women both have, I consider that their problem, not mine.

Yes they are desperate. It’s bad enough girls and women aren’t safe but even animals are in danger. I wouldn’t look it up then but the animal did get rescued and was living a lovely life afterwards. There was another case that only came out in the press this year involving calves. It was from the UK as well.

Oh I’m so glad Pony gets to live her life out in safety. Thanks to her rescuers.
Calves??? Seriously???
It beggars belief.
How vile.

How depraved.

Tangerinenets · 30/06/2025 15:11

I don’t like it either. There’s no way I would willingly have let my daughter show her arse at that age. Thankfully even now at 19 she doesn’t.

Gambola · 30/06/2025 15:25

SemperIdem · 29/06/2025 22:50

Having your arse out in public at any age is undesirable.

I couldn’t care less if it makes people think I’m a prude, but I quite simply would not allow/facilitate my teenage daughter owning clothes like that.

I don’t have a son, but if I did, him having his arse hanging out of his jeans would also be a no.

Totally agree..

Those saying teen girls virtually naked in public like this is okay are either incredibly naive or worryingly complicit in the sexualisation of young girls.

I do also wonder how many of those that are totally 'fine' about what the OP describes, have young daughters themselves?

Exactly. It’s rubbish about people saying young girls are confused. It’s one thing young girls rebelling against authority, quite another to deliberately display their genitalia! These girls know the difference

Chintzcardboard · 30/06/2025 15:32

AguNwaanyi · 30/06/2025 11:26

What the fuck? Men leer at women are teenage girls regardless of how they dress. Teaching your daughter that the burden of staying protected from perverts rests in her wardrobe choices is very smelly.

So OP, tits out & wear the thong! … this poster thinks makes no difference.

Thatsalineallright · 30/06/2025 15:33

The problem is that nowadays everyone has a smartphone. If a bunch of teenage girls start flashing passersby, someone will take a video and upload it onto the internet where it will stay forever.

And considering the ever-expanding use of facial recognition, their identities could be leaked, putting them at risk.

I'm so glad I grew up before smartphones.

That’s not what’s being discussed here, though! There’s a difference between showing a bit of leg and cleavage, to putting on a practically pornographic display!

Last update from the rescue centre in 2015 said she was thriving and was at the grand age of 21 years old ❤️ Yes, I know. It was on farm, ex employee son who was in his early 20s at the time, around 20-30 of calves died before he was caught. No jail and a £600 fine 🤬

Yes, because it’s sensible to teach girls (and boys) about personal safety and reducing risk.

Its not about rape for me, it’s about minimising being harassed in the street, or having some bloke think he can touch you up because he thinks that what you’re wearing means you’re up for it. Or any one of a hundred different harassments women face when they’re going about their daily business.

Yes they may still happen, but lowering risk, having an awareness of how you might come across and being able to stand up for yourself make a difference. Otherwise we’d just send our kids into the world and leave them to fend for themselves on the basis that shit happens.

Paedophillia isn’t just about rape, it’s about how some people view children as sexual entities, dressing your child in a tiny skirt and a bra top simply reinforces that mindset.

You saw them actually leaving school premises in skirts that displayed their underwear, no tights? Extremely surprised that was accepted by school staff.

See it all the time near our local secondaries but not in them I presume. Ironically they roll their waistbands so much, they all look like they're wearing rubber rings!

Also noticed young girls wearing denim shorts and they even roll those waistbands so they're shorter.

I used to wear very short mini dresses. So did hundreds of thousands of other girls and women.
I saw a TikTok the other day of a dad who walked into his daughter’s bedroom wearing the shortest or short jean shorts - it was absolutely hilarious and ridiculous.
He promised his daughter that if she wore her short-short jean shorts, he’d be right there beside her - wearing his.
I tend to think these girls are cute and that it’s a phase - they’ll be on to long dresses in 15 minutes without anyone badgering them into it.
And as far as the “sexualizing” of it - I’m intelligent enough to understand that it isn’t the clothing, it’s the messed up mental issues with the sexual assaulter..
I was 16 and bundled up in snow clothes when I was raped by the 55 yr perv who waa “a friend” of my parents.
It’s the perv not the style of dress. And that’s why pervs have flourished throughout history - regardless of what women happened to be wearing.

I'm sorry that happened to you 🤗, but you make the point clearly!

seems a lot of people are still more interested in victim blaming!

I do get what you are saying OP, but my main reaction is I'm kinda pleased for them that they are feeling happy and confident in themselves. There also seems to be a lot more body positivity now and more people have an "acceptable" body, which I think is just great.

I mostly hid my lovely body away at that age, believing I was white and fat and couldn't keep on top of body hair. I was absolutely gorgeous, but early 2000s body culture had me believe otherwise.

Yes, that's what I said pages ago, but been accused of all sorts since 🙄🙄

apparently being happy they're body confident is akin to saying they should show off their bums in public and I'm disgusting because they're children 🙄🙇🏻‍♀️

StarlightLady · 30/06/2025 16:35

Instead of fussing over this, let’s be thankful UK daughters, have a legal right to education, to walk the streets without a chaperone, to give their own consent for things and to show their faces.

MidSumner · 30/06/2025 16:35

Fetaface · 30/06/2025 12:05

Clothing is made for women to wear and to enjoy different fashions etc.

So thank you you now accept that what a female wears has no bearing on being attacked so what she wears makes no difference. Stop sexualising children.

Exactly!!

MidSumner · 30/06/2025 16:40

blandana · 29/06/2025 22:51

We all have different boundaries. My personal one is that my daughter can wear a short skirt but no bum cheeks on display, for example. She’s a child and fact is there are some disgusting men who get off on seeing things like that. Not with my child. When she’s older, it’s her choice, but also her risk so I hope she keeps good boundaries. Nothing to do with prudishness! It’s just safety.

🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️🙇🏻‍♀️

really? In this day & age??

Yep, there is absolutely no middle ground between wearing a niqab and showing your bum cheeks in school.

Thisshirtisonfire · 29/06/2025 23:02

God when else are you gonna be able to dress like that?
I look back at my teens years and wish I'd dressed more berserk to be honest. I wasted it feeling self conscious..
But even so I remember cutting my patterned tights to be thigh high stockings because I wanted to look like the spice Girls, and I was about 9 years old!! My parents didn't know because I took them off before I got home.
God bless them I say.
You've got to admire the body confidence.

And I say this as someone who was sexually assaulted at age 10 whilst wearing baggy jeans and one of my dads tshirts... what you wear has no bearing on predatory behaviour. Yes if you are wearing something revealing people might stare at you more.. but covering up does NOT protect any woman from anything.
So what's the bloody point? Especially in this weather..
Are any of those kids going to work? No. They are just hanging out having fun. Leave them alone to enjoy dressing ridiculously whilst they can.

Exactly!!

very sorry to hear that happened to you 🤗, but people still think they can keep their kids safe by 'not allowing' them to wear revealing clothing (it's as if they were never teenagers themselves) & other parents are 'negligent, unlike them' 🙄🙄🙄

But there has been a lot of victim blaming throughout the thread.
