I’m probably being a prude but…

…what is the deal with teenage girls running around basically naked these days?

Last week, I was driving down the road near a secondary school at letting out time and I must have seen about 5 girls’ actual bum cheeks as they were leaving school. Like, we all rolled our skirts up fairly short at school, but this was actually full knickers and bums on display… one girl was wearing a thong so it was just her whole bum on show.

Then, I was on the beach today (we live near the sea) with my two primary school aged sons and there were a group of maybe 13-14 year old girls, they were very young, more than half of whom were in thong bikinis. They spent most of the time on the beach doing a photoshoot, predominantly photos of them from behind looking out to sea, presumably for social media?!

I know teenagers have always been teenagers, but I’m pretty sure underage girls weren’t wearing thong bikinis on the beach when I was that age 😳

I could see other families on the beach felt uncomfortable with it too.

Do their parents know? Is this just how teenagers dress these days?

Personally, it's just skin, literally the same skin as is on their legs, it's just the top of their legs. I don't get the issue with bum cheeks, or boobs. So long as you can't see your actual genitals or anus I really don't care. Don't care about nipples either.

People liking their body and thinking they look good is a good thing imo.

I don't really care what teens wear - I used to be a goth and regularly wore 8 inch heeled boots out and about including to the supermarket with my mum - but I have to pull you up on your logic here. Vulvas, penises and anuses are all also just skin.

You seem to be saying we can’t stop men preying on children, so why have any safeguards.

I’m not saying that at all. I’m saying what you wear doesn’t have any impact on your chances of getting raped or not. I mentioned to another poster about the case of Pony, an orangutan who was forced to wear makeup and made to “work in a brothel” and another case were a man from the UK was raping calves to death. Google it as I know you probably won’t believe me. But them victims weren’t wearing clothes and it still happened. Utterly horrifying.

All people have bums.
Maaaaybe if people like you stop sexualizing 8y olds and accept that teenagers are in period of life when they are discovering their own sexuality in multiple ways (and do not need judgement from adults) it would be easier for everyone.

Stop stalking poor girls trying to navigate hormone storm and discovering what being a woman is for them.

Your judgement along the line (when they are adults - like 16 is ok?) is a step from - women shold not wear thongs at all, someone somewhere may get offended.

Not your body, not your choice.

Am I stalking girls? 😅 What a bizarre thing to say.

“If you don’t like seeing children sexualised then you must be a predator”

Is the wildest take I’ve ever seen

God when else are you gonna be able to dress like that?
I look back at my teens years and wish I'd dressed more berserk to be honest. I wasted it feeling self conscious..
But even so I remember cutting my patterned tights to be thigh high stockings because I wanted to look like the spice Girls, and I was about 9 years old!! My parents didn't know because I took them off before I got home.
God bless them I say.
You've got to admire the body confidence.

And I say this as someone who was sexually assaulted at age 10 whilst wearing baggy jeans and one of my dads tshirts... what you wear has no bearing on predatory behaviour. Yes if you are wearing something revealing people might stare at you more.. but covering up does NOT protect any woman from anything.
So what's the bloody point? Especially in this weather..
Are any of those kids going to work? No. They are just hanging out having fun. Leave them alone to enjoy dressing ridiculously whilst they can.

So naive, I'm sorry to say!

You were wearing thong underwear at 12?! Wow. I'd be talking to your parents about that, did they buy it for you? Realistically how large could your underwear be that it was an issue. A thong is for VPL not comfort. This is sad and disturbing to read!

Edited

No, I bought them. I don’t really see the issue with it. I was in year 8 and the majority of my friends wore them, so it was a common. Normal full sized briefs. I didn’t feel comfortable wearing them. I disagree, I find them very comfortable and still wear them now. I find you very naive when it comes to teenagers but you might be from an older generation I don’t know. I knew friends at 14/15 that had boyfriends and having sex, it happens. Teenagers a lot more clued up than you think. I had a placement in a sexual health clinic and it was very normal to see teenagers coming in. I think it’s better to accept that this happens than just ignore it. There was that Sarah Platt story line in Coronation Street about underage pregnancy, so it’s not a new thing. That was like 20 years ago I think. I suggest you watch Skins or Sex Education to wise yourself up.

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 30/06/2025 14:16

I'm a bit on the fence here. I think thongs, nudity, whatever goes on the beach. But I don't want to see up a teens skirt on the escalators in Westfield...

I've never in my life seen a boy with shorts so short his arse is hanging out, let's not pretend its anywhere close to the same scale and use it as an excuse to continue to sexualise children.

You've clearly never been to a gay club or a Pride event then, or a city where there is a large gay community on a Friday or Saturday night.

It's not a new thing either, I can remember seeing guys in incredibly short shorts at venues like the London Apprentice and the Vauxhall Tavern back in the early 80s.

Maaaaybe we need to work harder to explain to girls that "being a woman" doesn't mean walking around with your arse out. Boys seem to manage to grasp it.

Ah yes
Males never have their arses on display

Builders bums and "gangsta drop pants" are definitely females...

StarlightLady · 30/06/2025 14:29

It’s no wonder teens get confused. We tell them to assert themselves, we tell them to be themselves and then they are in the wrong.

But OP, surely there is a huge difference between what is a acceptable in the high street and what is acceptable on the beach?

l do consider you can overthink these things. I was UK born but lived in Paris because of dad’s job. As teens (l’m in my 40s now), we used to stand on a bridge on a summer’s night and flash our boobs to the tourist boats on the River Seine below. No harm was done and we ended up with professional jobs.

Genuinely though - I was just saying I thought the argument that bums are "just skin" is a stupid one. Why does that make me some sort of threat to children?

You were clearly saying that "it's just skin" failed as an argument because the bits that should be covered are also "just skin"

Which shows a good understanding, not a threat. I don't get it either

Although anyone should be able to walk around showing their wares, in theory, in practice it’s very unwise.
I doubt if many mums on here would approve of their daughter appearing in public like this!
Yes teenagers will do silly things, but what has been described on here is indecent and possibly a crime.

And I’m not taking about rape, I’m talking about young teenagers being overly sexualised through patriarchal beauty standards that tell them walking about with their arse on show is a good idea.

I can't be bothered to read the whole thread.

I'm 65 and often called a pearl clutcher on here

At 13/14 I sunbathed topless at Port Grimaud, Juan Le Pins, etc., as did my mother. And carried on doing it for several years. My daughter did/does on the cotes vermeille, probably since about 13.

At the same ages, neither of us ever had our backsides on show in town. But then I wouldn't wear flip flops in town. Equally vulgar. However, I can't say I pay that much attention to local school girls as I'm too busy going about my business.

If it's offensive and they are wearing an identifiable uniform (its purpose), perhaps a letter to the Head Teacher about the inappropriateness and reputation of the school. I recall my old HT reading out letters about the vulgarity of the gels, bringing the school I to disrepute for chewing gum and eating in the street.

But you are looking at the girls. And judging them on how they dress. How do the boys dress, why not look at them instead? Or, just keep walking and avoid looking at any of them.

But a) there are hundreds of the rude little sods who stop at random, push past people, walk completely blocking the pavement so I have no choice but to look forward...and girls being 51% of the population will therefore be in my line of sight
b) I avoid looking, my post was that I worry that people think I'm some sort of creep who is there to look and that I am just trying to look
