be outraged by the sexism in girls swimwear and underwear

At the outdoor pool in my town today, it's one for younger kids. All the girl children wearing close fitting costumes that show the shape of their bums all the boys wearing baggy swim shorts. There's a lot of climbing onto inflatables and on a number of occasions have to look away as I'm seeing much more of a girl than I want to.

Then doing laundry, realised that the girl pants are all thin cotton and the boy pants much thicker and with a broader gusset. If my girl kid is sitting cross-legged in the girl pants there is a risk of getting an eye full, whereas the boy pants do a better job of keeping what's in the pants private.

Why is this and what can be done to make clothing manufacturers stop being so sexist?

Buy you daughters trunks and relax

Sdpbody · 29/06/2025 20:15

It really bothers me. I have written in to NEXT multiple times.

You don’t have daughters, do you?

itsgettingweird · 29/06/2025 20:16

You can get board shorts for girls and boxer short underwear.

rumred · 29/06/2025 20:17

Same with adult clothes. Sexist shite, designed to keep women vulnerable.

Cabinetbat23 · 29/06/2025 20:18

Well yeah but this isn't a new thing is it.

usedtobeaylis · 29/06/2025 20:18

All girls clothes piss me off to be honest. I took my daughter for a quick shop yesterday and EVERYTHING in the 'girls' section was cropped. Everything. There was not a single top in two shops that wasn't cropped.

Purplestorm83 · 29/06/2025 20:18

My daughter wears H&M shorts-type underwear as she is allergic to knicker elastic 🙄 they give very good coverage

I have three.

FluffMagnet · 29/06/2025 20:19

It isn't the boxers though. It's the pants for boys. With a boy and a girl, it is very noticeable that the boys pants are simply better quality that the flimsy girls knickers. Bought at the same place. And whilst yes, I could buy the pants for my daughter, I'm not sure she'd be happy with the very boyish options available, especially when changing for PE or hanging from trees.

User37482 · 29/06/2025 20:22

I always buy DD shorts style knickers. But otherwise yeah i agree with you, boys generally don’t wear teeny speedos. It’s always very close fitting.

And it’s not ok

IDontHateRainbows · 29/06/2025 20:26

Is it not cos boys have dick n balls so close fitting swimwear would be too revealing?

Figfug · 29/06/2025 20:34

My girl wears ‘boys’ clothes a lot of the time. So she wore boxer shorts for the first few years and now wears short style pants. But most of her actual clothing is from the boys section. Her swimwear is a rash vest and board style shorts. She’s 12.

TheGrimSmile · 29/06/2025 20:41

Yanbu. This used to really piss me off at gymnastics where the boys wore shorts but the girls had to wear leotards so everything is on display.

LlynTegid · 29/06/2025 20:45

It's not new, it's just got worse, smaller bottoms for girls and women in particular.

I have a daughter and she wears swim trunks. What's wrong with that??

Comedycook · 29/06/2025 20:47

Yanbu....When my DD was younger I wanted to buy her some plain vests to wear under her uniform. Why did every single one I came across have a sodding bow on the neckline...What's the point. I bought her boys vests in the end.

Who is sitting cross legged in public in their pants?
All boys wear shorts over theirs and girls predominantly wear shorts under skirts or dresses.

Fyi if you’re going to main about your female children’s pants being too small maybe you need to be told every single supermarket or children’s clothes store sells short style pants for girls.

TheCurious0range · 29/06/2025 20:50

DS wears close fitting rash vest and swim leggings or short fitted shorts, his swim school asks that they don't wear baggy clothes. My niece wears similar

Girls don't wear shorts under skirts or dresses, well some might but it's not the norm.

All the girls wear shorts at my daughters gymnastics, all ages, so hopefully improving.

Edited

My daughter loves the bows on the front of vests, she learned to dress herself quicker than my son because she could tell the front and the back from the bows.

There's nothing wrong with that, there's also nothing wrong with some girls preferring the more feminine colours and designs. They shouldn't have to choose between a design they like and proper coverage.

Of all the people BU here, it's not little girls!

It's the same with shorts, I only have boys and I bought my male 18month old some little yellow shorts in a charity shop. They looked perfectly in proportion on him length wise but when I actually looked at the label they were for 3 year old girls, they would have been hot pants on a 3 year old!

BournardTourney · 29/06/2025 20:52

Not enough people make do and mend anymore. If the majority bought second hand and customised their own clothes and stopped buying from shops - the shops would soon want to know why. During the Wars dressed were made from potato sacks. People have lost their imagination, creativity and individuality.
