At the outdoor pool in my town today, it's one for younger kids. All the girl children wearing close fitting costumes that show the shape of their bums all the boys wearing baggy swim shorts. There's a lot of climbing onto inflatables and on a number of occasions have to look away as I'm seeing much more of a girl than I want to.

Then doing laundry, realised that the girl pants are all thin cotton and the boy pants much thicker and with a broader gusset. If my girl kid is sitting cross-legged in the girl pants there is a risk of getting an eye full, whereas the boy pants do a better job of keeping what's in the pants private.

Why is this and what can be done to make clothing manufacturers stop being so sexist?

@Burntt I disagree everyone on here has access to the internet if you insist on shopping at places like next and primark and Zara (am I right??) you are seriously limiting yourself. There’s a whole world of retail out there.

greencartbluecart · 30/06/2025 14:59

I think people get confused - see patriarchy as meaning men rather than the system in which men are favoured - billing feminists as men haters is part of that

and they sometime see feminism as meaning women are always right whatever they do and their every choice should be supported - clearly nonsense and I suspect a sort of patriarchal kick back against feminism - because the majority of women will tend to go along with / be part of the patriarchal system because that’s what we are born into - a way of twisting feminism to support the patriarchal status quo

Dont even get me started on the horrible itchy elastic on female (all age) knickers. Its a real hunt finding basic and reasonable costing pants without it.

Im on a budget btw

She wasn't being rude - you said they don't exist, but many shops sell a wide range of cotton cycling shorts

E.g. https://amzn.eu/d/7C9JNS1

They are viscose not cotton.

It doesn't stop with girls either. The women's stuff is as bad. I spend way more time in pyjama bottoms than most on MN would approve of. I always try to find ones which have pockets and are preferably dark in colour. I try to avoid ones with cutesy slogans or images (I'm 48, not 5). It's like looking for unicorn PJs. My choice generally is to move away from the cheaper stores or buy menswear which is usually too long and a tight fit around the hips.

I bought some lovely navy blue ones in Sainsbury's last year, the pockets are a decent size and you could mix and match so shorts/trousers with long or short sleeved tops. No slogans and perfectly plain. They are available. I bought 3 sets.

But girls need a wider gusset to cover their genitals when they sit cross legged/climb things. Clearly the pants aren't doing the job as parents are adding shorts.

So why do you think manufacturers aren't meeting the needs of girls but they are of boys?

Girls wear skirts and boys don't?

coxesorangepippin · 30/06/2025 23:51

Absolutely true

DD hates swim suits for this reason, so I bought her board shorts instead

Had to buy boys board shirts, as the girls one s don't have the sewn in underwear inside Confused

Then girls require sturdier underwear.

Try Uniqlo for girls pants. They are lovely thick cotton with no edging. £10 for three pairs.

horseplay12 · 01/07/2025 00:33

My DD12 hates the short shorts that are available, and swimming costumes that are skimpy/bikinis - she doesn’t want to be flashing her flesh, and nor should she either.

Girls don't wear shorts under skirts or dresses, well some might but it's not the norm.

My teenagers do and DD2 has done for years. I think it's quite common. Most of their friends do the same.

Well lots of good places have been named where they can buy it.

The comparison is between quality of boys and girls underwear/ clothes.
Boys is generally better quality. Why should girls have to pay more for similar quality?

Exactly. The fair comparison is between two packs of pants picked up eg in a supermarket. Not to say if you want girls knickers of a similar quality to boys supermarket pants you can get them by spending double the money at one of a small number of shops.

Sdpbody · 01/07/2025 11:05

One of my biggest annoyances is boys school shoes v girls school shoes.

Why can't they make closed toe girls shoes so their feet stay warm and dry with better support?!!

HelsBell25 · 01/07/2025 12:50

@Sdpbody they do

HelsBell25 · 01/07/2025 13:01

@NamelessNancy @Pinkfluffypencilcase this is just silly. If you have an agenda fine, but It's not correct. How are you measuring quality are you such experienced textile technologist you are able to tell the difference in cotton weights??

A quick Google of asda says this is not correct. The traditional girls knickers are all cheaper, probably because yes there is less material the cotton weights will be the same but with more lycra looking at the pics.

If you want a girls pant with more material in overalls plus across the gusset these are available at Asda but yes they are more expensive that the traditional knicker, but still cheaper or on a par wit the boys boxers 🙄

True, I am so angry that I and my dd always have to wear sandals. Yes, even in winter as there are only ever open toes shoes available. And the teachers shout at dd and all the girls as they all come to school in open toe shoes, even for PE. It's huge shame that no closed tie shoes exist for females. It's not fair 😥

Yanbu....When my DD was younger I wanted to buy her some plain vests to wear under her uniform. Why did every single one I came across have a sodding bow on the neckline...What's the point. I bought her boys vests in the end.

Edited

My D niece was the same and all the girls vests had small lace around the arms which irritated like mad. Boys version were so much softer and better quality !

TheignT · 02/07/2025 16:46

Took GC to adult and toddler swimming class. While waiting I looked at the costumes the 3 and 4 year old girls were wearing in the previous class. One was in a two piece, top was like a t shirt with little shorts that had a skirt round them, one in what I would say was a traditional one piece and wasn't skimpy not high cut legs the other 3 were in little suits that seem popular zip front sleeves to about the elbow and leggings to just above the knee. They were all different so I assume these things are widely available.

On my way out I had a quick look at the costumes the leisure centre was selling and very similar range although I think they were probably more expensive than going to a shop.

Are they double the price? Is it a small number of shops, sound like national chains you'd find all round the country.
