I live by a coastal lake in eastern Australia in amongst a group of five interconnected suburbs well-known for almost half the population being over 50 years of age.
Our main waterfront town swells about 10%-15% from Thursday night until Sunday afternoons but MOST of the locals do not change their ways or "scrub up" to look like they care what they look like.
My then European son-in-law (and family) was staying with us. He and I were the only ones up on a sleepy winter morning so I asked him if he wanted to go have coffee and toast by the waterfront before all the others woke up. He agreed.
We arrived at the cafe and sat outside enjoying the lake views and consecutive coffees when suddenly he asked, "Iain, is there a sports event or a fun run about to happen?"
"Why do you ask, Johan?" I replied.
"Well, almost everyone that waves to you and calls out 'GOOD MORNING' is wearing a track suit and brand name sports shoes," he explained.
"Normal day plumage in Toronto, Johan. Some of them even have it on 24-7."
"Ohhhhh?" he said, most surprised.
"Most people have zero concern what they look like to others in this pace. What you consider exercise-wear or fitness-wear, most of these folk consider as all day wear." I further elaborated.
Later on in the day, we had a family 4-star seafood restaurant lunch inside the sailing club where he almost fell off his chair having noticed that more than 20% of diners were in track-suits and sports shoes at 1:15pm on a sunny winter's day.
