To despise picky eaters?

If you have an allergy or religious reasons not to eat something, fine obviously but grown adults who 'don't eat' something absolutely irk me beyond words. My MIL looked horrified earlier when I said I was making chicken as a part of a weekend spread because SIL 'doesn't eat it'. I have accommodated for SIL but honestly, I was bought up that you get what you're given and eat what's infront of you. It's terrible manners is it not?

Yabu - hosts should cater for preferences
Yanbu - it's rude

I spent the first four decades of my life being called a picky eater, until I found out it’s a sensory thing because of my Tourette’s. People with sensory issues don’t just “dislike” things - for example something that might taste good to you can taste bitter or unpleasant to me, and also when I experience a sensation that my brain doesn’t like, it actually makes me angry. It’s called sensory rage and it’s fucking exhausting. I’m utterly baffled that you can fail to understand this but you think it’s ok for somebody to choose what they eat based on some ridiculous religious rules that were made up by a bunch of control freak men thousands of years ago.

So being a fussy eater means you are superior to the rest of us who have manners?

Being a super taster has nothing to do with manners or being superior. It just means we can taste things in a more extreme way. It causes problems because if something tastes or smells different I struggle to eat it. For example, there are certain oils which make food unpalatable to me. I can smell straight away if that oil has been used.

I’d love not to be a super taster but it’s not something I can change.

I have always been able to taste something metallic in most white fish - I can only have fish and chips from the places that get a daily delivery. No one in my family could taste it. I also can tell spread from butter no matter what else is in the sandwich and I can't eat that either.

I'm a massively picky eater but I would never expect any host to cater to me. It's my issue not theirs! I'll just bring wine and drink whilst they eat 😆🍷🤣

But if there's a spread you could choose something else, couldn't you?

I think OP is doing a spread.

With all due respect, maybe you should spend some time in Ethiopia and see what you manage to eat then?

I can eat it if necessary but I am another one who can tell spread from butter. many years ago now when Freixenet was new to the British market and taste testing was still a thing I was approached at the local mall in a very naice area and asked to do a tasting. I was given IIRC six glasses and asked to say which were Moet and which Freixenet. To the amazement of the lady doing it, I nailed it simply because I hate Freixenet and had tasted it before. it had a definite bitter metallic twang to me. That's a while ago and tastebuds lessen with age so I doubt I could do it now.

Completely agree. Adult fussy eaters are odd. It wouldn't kill SIL to eat chicken. I say this as a vegetarian!

Yabu. I hate tinned salmon. It smells awful. I feel sick at the thought of tinned salmon. I dislike pork too.

Pollqueen · 29/06/2025 17:27

Couldn't agree more. Nothing worse than a grown up fussy eater

Or she could choose something else from the spread that OP is putting on.

hhtddbkoygv · 29/06/2025 17:42

I would never dream of saying that to anyone as having lots of experience with ARFID.

hhtddbkoygv · 29/06/2025 17:42

Soubriquet · 27/06/2025 18:46

It seems odd to prepare something that you know one of your guests really dislikes. Don’t you want her to feel welcome and enjoy herself?

You don’t cater for the likes and dislikes of one person! Therein madness lies. You hopefully cater for a cross section of people given there are some that will like chicken.

OP’s preparing a selection/ spread so SIL and MIL can get over themselves. Leave what you don’t eat and stop spoiling things for others.

Many people these days think it’s all about them them them! Entitled much!

Tough shit then don’t eat it!

But don’t comment at a gathering where people have e made efforts to feed you

Crikeyalmighty · 29/06/2025 17:51

@askmenow totally agree - as I said below , will try and cater so people can pick and choose but I am not a restaurant

She didn’t say that in her OP, which is what I responded to 2 days ago.

I am aware that she said later that she’d prepared a spread, and therefore this all feels like a non-event.

godmum56 · 29/06/2025 18:04

It occurs to me that this thing about thinking selective eaters odd is odd. If someone posted on here about a person wanting them to perform a particular sexual act or practice that they didn't like, the response would largely be "your body your choice" The excuse that the person asking had gone to a lot of trouble to get ready for the occasion would (rightly) be given short shrift. So why is eating different?

So...as a vegetarian you would eat the chicken? I'm surprised tbh

Theunamedcat · 29/06/2025 18:46

There's probably a list of stuff I'm not keen on/don't like/ never cook but they don't make me ill so I wouldn't dream of mentioning them to a host. Stuff that make you shit blue lights is quite another matter.

OTOH I'm still waiting for any of the gluten intolerant people I know to actually not eat gluten when they want to. Not one. So pissed off to turn myself inside out to accommodate their needs, only to find it's as and when. And to hear them larfing about it.

<Disclaimer - this is anecdotal but I'm on my second hand counting them>

I'm gluten intolerant i won't deliberately eat gluten it makes me ill when I go to people's houses I eat jacket potatoes or salad if I want cake I take my own because I bake my own

Good lord, you’re very invested in this. Like I said, I replied 2 days ago and as it was a spread (oh look, yes, you’re right, thanks for not just replying to me saying so, as someone else had done, RTFT why don’t you, but also quoting the OP tagging me, well done you, have a ⭐️) , who the fuck cares?

Jesus.
