To despise picky eaters?

If you have an allergy or religious reasons not to eat something, fine obviously but grown adults who 'don't eat' something absolutely irk me beyond words. My MIL looked horrified earlier when I said I was making chicken as a part of a weekend spread because SIL 'doesn't eat it'. I have accommodated for SIL but honestly, I was bought up that you get what you're given and eat what's infront of you. It's terrible manners is it not?

Yabu - hosts should cater for preferences
Yanbu - it's rude

I ate chicken regularly but when I turned 30 I was having really debilitating attacks after meals. Anyway, long story but I had proper allergy testing and it turned out I was highly allergic to chicken. I had not seen that coming. I was convinced it was the alcohol, the strawberries, dairy, chocolate....anyway I had eaten chicken fine up til then. But suddenly I couldn't eat it at all. People were pretty bemused when I said no chicken please when going round for meals.

The pedant in me thinks you are allergic to something in the chicken ?

(Idly starts wondering what is specific to chicken).

I know turkey contains tryptophan (which allegedly can make you drowsy) ..

DM used to wheeze if she drank Robinsons barley water. Or eat mushrooms. (I was 19 when I first had mushrooms).

That's presumably because you think that no one is allergic to chicken. It isn't one of the common allergies but it's not unknown.

When I was having the allergy testing I was put on a diet of food that people are rarely allergic to. That's basically lamb, white fish, pears and root veg. I couldn't do it - at work in particular it was totally impractical. So I had skin privkctests instead. But anyway chicken wasnt on the list of money allergens.

Not quite sure that's what I said. (In fact I know it isn't).

I was merely wondering what it might be in "chicken" that triggers an allergy. Purest scientific curiosity for me. But possibly vital information for a sufferer, in case it turns out that whatever it is in chicken also appears in something completely unexpected. Remember some vaccinations use chicken proteins ...

I used to be quite happy eating chicken but couple of weeks ago cooked some chicken breasts that just tasted.....well, tasted too much like chicken and my taste buds have revolted. I hope it's temporary as it's such a useful and common main course.

MrsAvocet · 01/07/2025 12:14

I ate chicken for over 50 years but I don't now. I stopped when I started keeping chickens and then started looking more critically at the commercial poultry industry. People are allowed to change their minds about things and alter how they live, even after a long time. I do agree though that if you have changed your diet recently, whatever the reason, you should inform people who are catering for you - you can't assume that they are going to somehow magically know that you no longer eat something that they've served you many times previously.

Sorry, I dont see why you are zoning in on what's in chicken as opposed to chicken itself then - it's just that most people seem astonished that anyone could be allergic to chicken. But people are.

I developed the allergy when I was stressed out at work. My understanding is that I probably had low level reactions to chicken like a mildly upset stomach, but the stress put my system into overdrive. A bit like the final straw.

And then I never recovered. If I mistakenly eat a piece of chicken I am very ill.

It happens with organic chicken too.

Luckily I can eat turkey. It's from a different family.

I had a dog who was properly histamine flare up allergic to pork, hard cheese and duck. In droopy eared dogs it often results in terrible ear infections as the inflammation and lack of ventilation is a wonderful breeding ground for fungus. At the time pork and duck were considered safe foods for allergic dogs as they were so rarely used in commercial dog food.

Most definitely the blander one ...

Yes but it's handy at Christmas.

My son has arfid. I despise when people tell me “ I wouldn’t have that, my kids eat what we eat or they starve” one sure way to piss me off!

I had people saying that I wasn't trying hard enough - DS will eat anything, he's always eaten with us and been exposed to all sorts of foods, but DD has ARFID, discovered after years of trying different ways to get her to eat. At least with her list of safe foods she eats, otherwise it's just food thrown away as she would just starve. It's not like we started with Deep Dish Pizza and decided that should be her main food source. At least we're keeping them alive, and her dietitian has found a few extra things to fill the gaps in her diet.

Well not quite. But slow cooker roast chicken is a MN gem, like burrito duvets 😀

Knowing there's a few supertasters on this thread - does anyone else find that Mars bars taste spicy? (Given it's on a medium-curry level for me, I can imagine how other people may interpret the taste of some foods differently, and may then wish to avoid them. For DH it's coriander - he says it has a soapy, pungent taste but I don't get that)

Not quite an answer, but it was easier to give up chocolate than carry on charting the slow demise of this heavenly creation with my pocket and taste buds.

Not eating chicken is hardly picky. My DP doesn’t eat any meat except chicken because it really turns his stomach and he finds it disgusting. Far better to tell someone so they don’t serve him food he can’t eat.

As for me, I won’t eat oysters or caviar and I dislike truffle. Thankfullly it’s far less likely I’ll be served those casually.

Bit we all have foods we hate. Why force them on someone? The only fussy eater that annoys me is my nephew because he’s 3 and only wants to eat cake.

Have you missed that the SIL has eaten chicken at OP’s like 40 times before?

Also that there is a spread so SIL can eat something else?

I think that's the sign of intelligence, myself Cake

I think if you know your guest doesn't like something, I would avoid including it. Plenty of other options and I do think it's part of being a good host.

OP was a good host.

She bought something that SIL had eaten 40 times before.

So what the heck was your MIL on about?

Tagyoureit · 03/07/2025 20:21

So the fussy cow who doesn't eat chicken, came over, ate the chicken but nothing else?

So what was the point of your MIL making such a fuss over non chicken eating SIL??
