That hand washed dishes should be rinsed with clean water?

When hand washing, interested in how many people either -

Wash dishes then rinse with clean water, then put on the drainer to dry

Or
Wash dishes and put on the drainer with soap suds and dirty water still on them?

I don't like the idea of eating and drinking from something that's got some cleaning chemicals left on it, but my partner says I'm being fussy!

I think rinsing is very important - the dishes aren’t clean if they’re covered in suds and remnants of the dirty dish water.

It’s only in the UK (maybe only England) where this is considered acceptable

Most people in the UK do not consider it acceptable!

The plastic bowl is surely a UK thing? That is something I think is weird.

I think it must be. I grew up in another country and had never seen a plastic washing up bowl that lives permanently in the sink. When I encountered it upon moving to England I thought wow that's so strange, a plastic bowl that gets food debris on it and then must be cleaned, what's wrong with using the actual sink itself? I could never understand it and don't use one. I'm still not sure what it's for!

RaininSummer · 25/06/2025 10:09

I don't rinse very often though probably should. It's tricky to do unless you wash under water which seems wasteful.

Zanzara · 25/06/2025 10:18

Thirty odd years ago, my cousin was doing cancer research in the States. She told me back then that it was known that washing up liquid was a carcinogen, so I have always rinsed when washing by hand.

Also, as a Coeliac I do not want to use tableware which has been soaked in a glutenous soup in the bowl. EVER. Please rinse your washing up, people!

And no, this is not a British thing. It's an individual thing.

Drew79 · 24/06/2025 22:20

Yep
Someone recently had hand washed a pile of stuff, a baking try slid off the pile and hit the floor, there was enough oil on the underside of it to cook a batch of potato wedges..

If there's still grease after the washing stage, a water rinse isn't going to solve that. Oil/grease just repels water, hence needing washing up liquid in the first place.

I just put the tap on a slow
Trickle, rinse each plate after ive washed it.

Cutlery I'll wash and stack in a pint glass, then when full I'll run water into the glass to rinse them as a bunch. Hardly uses any water.

Again, read the conversation, it was side talk about people who don't wash things properly, not about rinsing...

I don't really have baths. But when I did I'd shower after & wash my hair.

why is showering different to washing dishes, same principle rinse the soap off.

Edited

Well I don't know how you shower, but I'm generally not standing directly under the shower head when I lather so of course I have to rinse off with water. The difference between showers and washing dishes is that washing dishes is akin to being in a bath - i.e. you are in a bowl of water. Which you are not when showering.

If you would have a bath and then follow it with a shower all I can say is - how extremely odd Confused

BarnacleBeasley · 25/06/2025 10:50

When I was a student I shared a house with a boy who didn't rinse. When he put a pan of water on to boil, it would be full of bubbly washing-up liquid scum. That's when we agreed not to use each other's pans.

I have always hated washing-up bowls too, so now I have a 1.5 sink so I can rinse in the small one. However, I actually find it more wasteful to fill up a whole sink with water to do the washing-up, because if I put the plug in and then start washing under the hot running tap, I'm normally done (and rinsed) before the sink is full, unless there's absolutely loads to wash.

I don't live in the UK and as I've already said I've never seen anyone rinse their dishes.

But in a bath you are just sitting in your dirt be that sweat, dead skin cells any actual dirt. It’s no different to the washing up in the fact it’s just a bowl/bath of water you’ve put something dirty into and hope that makes it clean.

Without rinsing it’s just bubbles and dirt.

Bubble bath isn’t even great for cleaning relaxing maybe but a deep cleansing clean no.

No it wasn't. The original comment that people are replying to says My DM doesn't rinse the dishes and everything I take "clean" from the cupboards is covered in a film of grease
That implies it's the lack of rinsing that's the the issue.

Well, I think 'odd' is a bit rude, but I'm happy to wash myself & my dishes differently to you & consider my way more hygienic 🤷🏻‍♀️

if you consider just swilling about in soapy/used water good enough for you/your dishes, fine, you do you, for myself I don't consider either properly clean 🙅🏻‍♀️

Totally agree!!

If I have a bath I use the shower nozzle to rinse my body off afterwards.

Apparently that makes us 'odd' 🤣🤣I'd have said 'clean' myself!

What do you find 'tricky'?

I just stack the soapy dishes at the side, then run the hit tap & rinse & place in the drainer, it would be easier if I had a 1.5 or 2 sink, but I don't at the moment. May do when I redo the kitchen?!

1984Winston · 25/06/2025 13:41

I rinse, my husband doesn't 😬 so I re wash everything he washes up 🙄

Oh I'd have had a lovely new patio by now!!

Whyx · 25/06/2025 13:50

This refers to dishwasher detergent so I appreciate that washing up liquid may be different but this is the reason I have always rinsed all my hand washed dishes. Also I can taste residue sometimes which is unpleasant.

Dishwasher detergent interferes with gut health

He leaves dirty teaspoons next to the sink aswell 🙄 luckily for him he has many other redeeming features so he's safe 🤣

This paper is specifically about professional dishwashing machines which have much shorter cycles and use less water than domestic dishwashers. And the biggest impact was seen with rinse aid (which isn't needed in soft water areas). They did not see toxic effects in domestic dishwashers.

waits for the onslaught

🤣🤣 I’m assuming this is a joke!?

I would suggest she's not washing things properly then. I only rinse glasses and none of my dishes have any grease on them.

MyQuirkyTraybake · 25/06/2025 17:06

What the heck are you all eating for things to still be greasy after washing up?
