That hand washed dishes should be rinsed with clean water?

When hand washing, interested in how many people either -

Wash dishes then rinse with clean water, then put on the drainer to dry

Or
Wash dishes and put on the drainer with soap suds and dirty water still on them?

I don't like the idea of eating and drinking from something that's got some cleaning chemicals left on it, but my partner says I'm being fussy!

I don't want w'up liquid residue on my crockery and stuff so I always rinse.

Mum always said you need three things to do the washing up; hot water, good quality w'up liquid and a decent sponge or brush, otherwise it was pointless. Three things our cookery teachers at school just didn't get!

TwoHares · 24/06/2025 22:23

I only rinse mugs and glasses, and lived several decades without becoming ill. I followed what my mum did. She didn’t get ill from non rinsed plates either.

Giggorata · 24/06/2025 22:23

I don't think people used to rinse their dishes at all in the UK, certainly my parents didn't. Perhaps the more widespread use of dishwashers brought the idea of rinsing in.
i started to do it about thirty years ago, after my sister, who lived abroad, pointed out that “Brits don't rinse.”

OntheBorder1 · 24/06/2025 22:23

Not this again! I don't live in the UK and in my many years of visiting other people's houses I have never seen anyone rinse their dishes, other than one or two who rinse glasses only. Somehow we are all hale and hearty, and not wasting precious water.

CoubousAndTourmalet · 24/06/2025 22:23

We have no dishwasher. We wash everything in warm soapy water then rinse under the cold tap before placing in the draining rack.
Our items are washed in the washing-up bowl, but pet dishes are done in the stainless steel sink.

Caerulea · 24/06/2025 22:26

I no longer run washing up water. I put soap on the sponge/scrubber, wet whatever I'm washing, scrub, then run under the tap. Continue till I'm out of suds then reapply soap (fwiw - Fairy max-power antibacterial is THE best liquid)

It's how I wash up at work where things are really dirty & greasy & a sink full of water would be useless.

RitaFires · 24/06/2025 22:29

Washing the dishes is something that everyone assumes is so simple that it's self explanatory but so many people do it differently and think their way is just common sense. I'm a rinser because I have been able to taste residue before but luckily I have a dishwasher so rarely have to hand wash anything.

My parents did in the 1960s, before we got a dishwasher.

There were very bold lipstick prints on a wine glass in the pub earlier tonight (not mine) and it was supposedly a 'clean' glass. Shows how effective the glass washing machines are.

Flossflower · 24/06/2025 22:44

In the late 1970s, a friend of mine who came from the US said her mother wouldn’t visit the UK because she had heard that we don’t rinse dishes here.

I very rarely wash anything by hand. With a few exceptions, I just don't buy things you can’t put in the dishwasher.
If I do handwash anything, I always rinse in hot water.

Eldermileniummam · 24/06/2025 22:48

I always rinse but my DH just puts plates on the drying rack covered in soap suds out of the dirty water...

fixingmylife · 24/06/2025 22:49

Always rinse for me.

Greenvases · 24/06/2025 22:50

Rinsed of course.

Tagyoureit · 24/06/2025 22:50

I wash up under running water so I wash, then rinse then put it on the draining rack but I rarely wash up, thats DHs job.

thebluehen · 24/06/2025 22:51

No rinsing here. Aren’t we all supposed to think about wasting water? !

chocolatemademefat · 24/06/2025 22:51

I never rinse. Couldn’t be bothered faffing around - not to mention wasting water. Haven’t died yet.

Ponderingwindow · 24/06/2025 22:52

Rinse extremely well

allergic to most soap. Use a safe version for my own dishes, but have reacted to other people’s dishes before.

I understood how detergents work is they bind the grease into the water leaving dishes clean. So I'm happy to wash in the hot soapy water and leave to drain. Obviously refresh the water if there's a lot to get through. And observe the order of washing up taught in Brownies. https://cassiefairy.com/2013/01/24/the-brownie-girl-guides-way/

That's how I wash up too. Things aren't "covered in suds" when I take them out of the bowl and I've never been ill from soap residue (is that a thing?)

And if people's dishes are still greasy then they aren't washing them properly. I'm not sure rinsing would help.

East Anglian water are planning a new reservoir with Cambridge because the area is running out of water. By 2040

Thames Water are planning a reservoir near Abingdon for the same reason no water by 2050.

I understand why now.

Edited

Quite.

Whatwouldnanado · 24/06/2025 22:59

Yes. Relative who is a bit self-righteous about not having a dishwasher does performance washing up with loads of bubbles “ oh I can get it all gone in the time it takes to load one of those things “ then leaves it all to drain on the side. No rinsing. Coffee at hers tastes like bath water.

Slightyamusedandsilly · 24/06/2025 23:06

Always rinse. I don't want to eat washing up liquid or taste soap.

vodkaredbullgirl · 24/06/2025 23:07

Too many precious poster on here 😆

wand3rer · 24/06/2025 23:09

😮People don’t rinse?! I live in the UK but I’m not originally from here. I’ve never really had the chance to observe how British people do the dishes. It never occurred to me that rinsing wouldn’t be a universal practice 😨

Exactly this. Hasn’t failed me in six decades plus so I’ll carry on thanks. Including the correct order!

Err, I rinse with the smallest dribble of water from the tap into the plugged sink.

My car only gets washed every six months these days, I'm probably an under average water user overall.
