Is it the processed food nature of the nickname you’re objecting to, or the carnivorous-ness? Because we’re all vegetarians and I still call DS ‘chicken’.

Yes, but chickens exist whether or not they are bred to be roasted.

Sausages do not!

I would suggest, for example, that ‘piglet’ is an inclusive nickname wrt omnivores/ veggies, but ‘ham’ or ‘pork pie’ not.

Ditto Lamb, and Kebab or Lambchop.

butterdish93 · 24/06/2025 15:11

i have two little sausage butties.
definetky pickles, squids. Pickled squids occasionally.

antsyaardvark · 24/06/2025 15:11

Yes but only on her birth cert and official documents. We just go with Saus for ease in daily life

Funnywonder · 24/06/2025 15:13

I have a chicken. Or sometimes chick. Or chicken noodle soup. He is now 12. He asked me to stop calling him that and a variety of other pet names a few months ago. Can’t say I blame him. He said ‘Will you please stop calling me those silly childish names?’ and I said ok (felt a bit chastised tbh.) But sometimes I forget🤣 I’m not really a pet name calling type of person. I didn’t do it with his older brother. Maybe DS2 is suffering from being the youngest. And very small and cute.

SnipThoseApronStrings · 24/06/2025 15:18

Sausage sometimes and chicken othertimes

QuickPeachPoet · 24/06/2025 15:18

I call the dog sausage! And he isn't a sausage dog.

AppleOfMyThirdEye · 24/06/2025 15:19

I do.

Chocolatecustardcreamsrule · 24/06/2025 15:19

I call my cats my little sausages when they are sprawled out on the sofa and they seem to like it. I also call them my little cumberlands when they are curled up, I am not sure of why or when the sausage based names started.

HelenCurlyBrown · 24/06/2025 15:24

No, but it reminds me of my friend at school’s terribly posh dad who called all women or girls ‘sausage/sossi or soss-pot’. I loved that.

HangingOver · 24/06/2025 15:25

Late DM used to say "Poor sausage" when I was poorly ♥️

TheOnlyMrsW · 24/06/2025 15:25

Yep, every now and then I try different ones like "pickle" "pumpkin" a la Sally Hawkins in Paddington (mainly to embarrass DD) but regularly go back to sausage!
DD is 19 😂

Waitingfordoggo · 24/06/2025 15:26

Not now as they are young adults but I did occasionally when they were little. DS had a lovely childminder who always called him sausage- I found it very sweet.

I call my dog sausage though (he is not a Dachshund and his name is unrelated to sausages).

😂

When our daughter was little we used to call her Poddle. I haven't the faintest idea where we got that from.
When I was a child I was never addressed by anything but my full first name, not even the shorter version I preferred. 😥 The one exception was when my great aunt called me Poppet, which I loved and have never forgotten even though I'm an old woman now. I think sausage is a cute and affectionate thing to call someone, (although I realise some would need it to be 'vegan sausage').

Galaxyandcadburys773 · 24/06/2025 15:31

I'm with you OP. I know I sound like a cantankerous old cow but some people's nicknames for their kids irritate the crap out of me but weirdly nicknames for pets don't. I know a mum who calls her 3 kids munchkins and loads of mums seem to use Boo and Moo a lot which is equally as irritating.
I perfectly accept IABU but I can't help it

UrsulaBelle · 24/06/2025 15:32

My dad called me 'sausage.' I'm 60 and he's been dead for 20 years. It's a nice memory.

AwardGiselePelicotTheNobelPeacePrize · 24/06/2025 15:32

50% sausage, 50% chunky chops. Unrepentant.

Kingsleadhat · 24/06/2025 15:32

I used to call my dog Petit Saucisson

mickandrorty · 24/06/2025 15:34

No i am a misery, I don't call anyone any pet names, it all makes me cringe! honey, darling, lovely, hubby and by far the worst hubster bleh

KurtShirty · 24/06/2025 15:35

We have fish faces

Simbaonedaythiswillallbeyours · 24/06/2025 15:37

My mum called me 'chickadee' as well as 'chicken'

I call my son 'monster munch' and my daughter at 16 still gets called 'piggle'. No clue where any of these came from but we all roll with it.

Mmmcheese89 · 24/06/2025 15:37

This is cooper. He was regularly called a 'mummys little sausage man'. And he totally was. I miss my little man.

PicklesHome · 24/06/2025 15:39

I used to call my DD Pickle but we adopted a dog who was already named Pickle a few months back (hence the name) so now I’ve got an actual pickle and DD usually goes by either squid or beanbag. Absolutely no reason behind either.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 24/06/2025 15:39

I call my son a cheeky chops, and my youngest daughter has a pet name of "Woodles" that my DH called her when she was a baby, which goes quite well with her actual nickname of her first name.

I always like pet names and think they're quite sweet. I couldn't really care less if anyone else thinks they are childish or silly. They are for children, after all 😆😏🤷

TorrentialHighSeas · 24/06/2025 15:39

Yep I have two sausages. Saucissons when I’m feeling fancy.

Comedycook · 24/06/2025 15:40

Sometimes I like to switch to french and call my DD my little saucisson
