My local skip is a very busy place. There is often a huge queue of cars and once you are in the queue, you absolutely cannot leave, there is no way of driving out of it or turning around due to the way it's structured. You're going through the skip, and that's that.

Today, I was in the queue of doom and a worker walked along the line of cars and told everyone that they just needed to use the crusher before they could let anyone through and to do that, they needed to wait until the cars already parked up and using the skips, had all left, then they could use the crusher and start letting people in again. It was my lunchbreak so I was in a bit of a rush, but nothing I could do.

But watching the people already using the skip was so irritating. They knew there was a line of approximately 20-30 cars waiting, they knew no one else could enter until every car had gone, but they all sauntered back and forth with their stuff from their boots, they stopped and chatted to one another, one guy had a quick cigarette before getting in his car, another sat in the drivers seat and did something on his phone before slowly putting on his seatbelt and leaving...

I just cannot understand people who are so incredibly slow and insist on doing unnecessary things in busy places where people are clearly waiting to use the thing they are using.

The other day, a waitress bringing our food to out table stopped mid-way and chatted to a customer she knew, while holding our plates of food, letting them get cold - why? talk on the way back if you must!

And the amount of people I see letting their toddlers use their debit cards to pay while smiling indulgently as the kids drops the card or taps it wrong with a queue of people waiting, or who stand at the till transferring money, or ask the bus driver an endless series of questions with a whole busload of people waiting, plus the 50 cars behind the bus....

If you are one of these people who fuck about, why? and are you also irritated by the fucking about or am I just far too angry?

You have zero clue what is going on in any of those people's lives though. Sure, some may just be dicks but some might be going through something and therefore just generally unaware of what impact they may be having.

A modicum of compassion costs you nothing except maybe a tiny bit of your time. Which is not more important than theirs, regardless of whether they are deliberately or unknowingly "causing a problem".

And it's only a problem to you. It's not a problem to a lot of people. Some people, even efficient ones, can still see the joy in letting kids pay or that the old widow at the till is loving having someone to chat to, or that the old man at the tip with a couple of items is taking a moment to let go of something he may have had a lifetime.

Have some patience, stress less about it. It can only be good for you.

And it's only a problem to you. It's not a problem to a lot of people.

I think this thread and poll is a very clear indication that it is not only a problem to me. Very clear.

It's a problem to a hell of a lot of people. And when people faff around and leave a queue full of people behind them, who also might have their own issues and problems, I can't help but think it's that one faffer causing the hold up that needs to change their behaviour, not the 30 people behind them.

Whilst in general agreement, I will say the opposite can sometimes annoy me. Is it really necessary to charge down the escalator at the tube station as if your arse was on fire at a station where the trains go every two minutes? I almost got knocked down the other week, and yes, I was on the right side of the escalator, taking up as little space as possible so the rushers who can't possibly wait the 15 seconds for the escalator to get them down can charge past.

5 minutes later and I make it on to the same train as them. They've gained nothing, risked falling and taking out those further down like skittles, and for what, exactly?

I used to have this at school

I was either dropping off or picking up and as soon as I had,I needed rush off to get to work/college or would be knackered and just want to grab the kids and go home

I'd always get stuck behind the mums/dads who seemed to have all the time in the world to walk slowly to the classroom, hang around at the door and then slowly walk back out while chatting to their mates, then standing chatting at the gates, blocking anyone who was in a rush

I just wanted to get in,do the 'love you!bye sweetheart' before rushing out to catch the bus

And then you'd get the glares for daring to ask them politely to move (while moving as slowly as they could)

Same at hometime-theyd stick around got so long in the playground, the after school club had to issue a letter asking them to get their kids and go

Made no difference at all-the same faces just faffed about for hours in the playground, chatting to their mates (pick up was 3:15 and they'd still be there at half 6)

Now I walk via a sainsburys on the way to work

I want to get in,choose my lunch, pay and get the hell out if there

Every single time,I get stuck behind Derek at the meal deal section-he's slowly choosing a sandwich while taking up the whole section with his trolley

I finally get to chose mine and rush to the till

I get stuck behind mavis who is slllooowwwlllyyy putting her shopping through on the belt

Once it's all on there and put through, she has to piss about finding her purse and glasses but can't remember if they are in her pocket or handbag, also she can't find her nectar card so slowly checks both, normally twice before finding one but not the other

Finally she pays (while acting slightly shocked what she had to find her cards) and then stands in the way while she packs her shopping as slowly as she can

Her husband normally shows at this point, slowing down the whole process further while I'm bent double trying to get my lunch through and go

I always get stuck behind the slowest person on the planet while trying to get out and then I'm finally free and in more of a rush to get to work

I do try to go to tesco I'd I can because it doesn't seem to happen so badly there-i can pay at the tobacco till-longest I've waited is 3 minutes

My darling mil

I adore her,I couldn't love her more but as soon as we are ready to leave the house,it's like she freaks out

Have we shut and locked all the windows?
Is the cooker off?
Have we locked the French doors?
Have I got my purse/glasses/keys/handbag/medication?
Are all the lights off?
Have we unplugged everything?
Is the front door locked properly?

I adore her but want to strangle her at the same time (lighthearted)

I was once up at 6 am for work, finished at 2pm and wed agreed to have a mates dog and he said he'd drop the dog off at about half 4/5

Hes faffed about at home so much,he finally dropped the dog off at midnight

I was on my knees,I'd been up 18 hours (8 at work-retail) and he came bouncing into our house and stayed for an hour, just faffing about in the kitchen (I went to bed-i left him to dp)

I hate faffers with a passion

Phew! That's quite a catalogue there.

How do you know the parents are still in the playground at 6:30pm? Anyway, I'm sure I'd be able to run that gauntlet more smoothly than you describe and on the off chance of other parents giving me negative vibes, I wouldn't care at all.

With regard to Derek's trolley, I'd just move it out of my way in that situation. I'd do it with a smile, but if the Derek tutted I would turn up the wattage of my smile. I simply don't mind annoying the Dereks of the world.

You're not wrong about there being a lot of oblivious bastards out there and they are annoying, but ultimately they're not going to change so you're going to have to change your reaction - I know that sucks!

Incidentally, you're getting hyphens and dashes confused.

I dont think it's the walking slow that people are objecting to per se. We all know that some people can't walk fast.
It's the blatent dithering and faffing that's annoying and the complete lack of awareness or consideration.
The OP mentions someone standing by their car having a cigarette, people chatting, a guy sitting on his phone, holding up 20-30 cars!
That's not moving slowly for a medical reason. That's downright selfishness.

Edited

I wasn't talking about walking either, I was talking about the perceived 'dithering & faffing' at the till. I can't be quick to get my card out & I have to put it away properly now before moving off or I'll drop it and lose it.

I don't look like it's 'medical' either, I just look like a middle aged woman being unprepared to 'pay quickly' like it's a surprise I need my card & a fuss pot putting it away so carefully.

Do you not build in 'other people arsing about' time into any task that has to be achieved. It varies from around 10 percent for food to an eye watering 50 percent for any activity at a Post Office. Supermarket car parks 20 percent, bank cash lodgement 15 percent, etc etc
If you do this it makes life easier to navigate.

The one that makes me the most angry is drivers 🙈 40 in a 60 is a popular one like why the feck you even on the road get a mobility scooter for god sake. Or stopping at a roundabout you can see is clear half a mile away. Some people just have way too much time to p about i think. I have autism and adhd so I get quite angry very easily

YouBelongHere · 24/06/2025 14:47

Oh OP I know exactly how you feel. Recently went on a trip to Disney where my patience was massively tested.

Queuing at the end of a long day to get some food, just wanted to sit and eat, all the self-service machines were taken. One lady yelling in a random direct 'PAUL!? PAUL, WHAT DO YOU WANT!?' Literally why didn't you organise this with blessed Paul before you joined the queue? Sending kids off to find other family members to find out what they want, there were like 4 options on the menu and they were all burgers, either find out in advance or just bloody guess at that point. Me and my friend both grumbled about a man who was mid-order who just stopped and looked around the food court gormlessly for a minute and then went back to ordering?

Waited to get the eurostar home, the departures for London trains security area is quite tight and it was filled to the brim so people stuck at the gates waiting to get into security to have their bags checked. Security walking up and down the queue asking people to get ready - why were people still getting to the front and THEN taking off their jacket, their belt, taking their phone out of their pocket, generally farting around?? We've all been stood in this queue, just sort yourself in the queue and then hold your stuff so you can get through quickly when you're at the front!?

The toilet one is so annoying and why after waiting ten years for a cubicle to come free do women slowly come out, peering around like they're entering Earth for the first time?? MOVE and go to the sink!

Haha…I too have found my people!

I think I shocked my DH the first time we went to the airport together. I apparently didn’t warn him that I have an ‘airport speed’. Sad to say he’s a security faffer. Over the years he’s gotten better at being prepared. But it was rough there for a few years.

Speaking of airports… can we talk about coffee? Anywhere else in the world I will roll my eyes as I wait for you to order. But at an airport at 6am you are close to seeing the hereafter.

double half caff latte with 3 pumps of Carmel 2 pumps vanilla-oh wait you don’t have this vanilla what vanilla do you have oh no I don’t like that one ok skip the vanilla maybe instead do you have the hazelnut ok make it 1 pump of hazelnut and change the Carmel to 3 pumps are you sure you don’t have the other vanilla the Starbucks at home has that vanilla they said they were getting complaints about that one ok no I guess the hazelnut will do-, 2 extra shots, light on the foam, use a blend of oat milk and 2% with light cinnamon sprinkle. Chris Chris Chris (Chris is never standing in line so this part is clearly being shouted) Chris what did you want… Chris I’m ordering what did you say you wanted? Chris Did you want a latte or a cappuccino? Chris you should just come here and tell them Chris they’re waiting…I forgot what you wanted was it a latte? Ok whatever let’s get him a vente latte oat milk heavy foam

(Chris ambles up slowly eating a banana) No babe I said I wanted an Americano but with a triple shot of espresso.

Wait when did you tell me that you never order that I thought you liked lattes oh the total. Here let find my card (rummage through 4 different bags) Chris I can’t find my wallet. No my green one not my blue one I know I put it in here but I can’t remember what bag I’m sure it’s here I used it at the store we were at OMG what happened to it no the green one Much rummaging later. oh wait here it is… tink…tink…it doesn’t seem to be working…oh is it ready? Are you ready for me? Should I try now tink

And while all this is going on I’m dying on the inside and finally get to the front card in hand.

Medium black dark roast please. Tink

I see a number of you have met my DF. He is very vocal about people taking up ridiculous amounts of space, blocking access and fannying around gawping and chatting in the supermarket. Not unreasonable except that he usually says all this while standing at 90 degrees across an aisle with one arm at full extension to his trolley and the other extended to select his item. And all in the sort of ringing tone that would make a Colour Sergeant raise an eyebrow. My DB and I think it is some sort of performance art project.

For the sake of my sanity and the lives of others I learned to bypass Starbucks and go to the quick grab window of one of the restaurants that serve breakfast sandwiches and plain coffee. That’s all they have. There is about 4 choices for food. Everything they have for food is in the case (which is unceremoniously popped in the convection oven for 2 min) and your choice of coffee is medium or large.

It’s not the best coffee but it’s quick 😁

SoonToBeArtStudent · 24/06/2025 16:53

Most of the things described here aren’t really faffing though, just normal life?

The tip - not everybody goes there all the time, I rarely go so I’m not too familiar with it and do need to spend a few minutes reading the labels on the containers to make sure I’m putting stuff in the right one.

Petrol station - of course people are going to put their seatbelt on/put directions in the sat nav/have a drink of water etc before driving off, it’s not very safe to do those things while you’re driving so you need to do it before you set off. Yes you could move to the other parking spaces but if it’s busy enough to be a queue for the petrol then chances are the other spaces are taken too. And of course they’ll be driving off slowly, you’re hardly going to go from 0-60 in a petrol station.

Checkouts - People get their purse out at the end because before this they’ve been busy putting the shopping on the conveyor belt, then bagging it up. I do put it in my pocket if I have one, but I’m not always wearing something with pockets and I’m not leaving my purse out on the counter while also wrangling shopping and a young child, I want it safe in my bag until I’m ready to pay.

Young kids helping with shopping/paying - keeps them busy and happy, the alternative is they get bored and run off or tantrum, you’ll no doubt be complaining about that too and it would slow things down even further.

People looking at their tickets and looking for their seats - maybe they don’t have great eyesight or it just takes them a bit longer to get their bearings, especially if they have processing difficulties (which many ND people do)

Public toilets - many medical conditions mean people might take longer

None of the things listed delay anyone by any more than what, 3 minutes max? People saying that those they consider “faffers” are selfish and inconsiderate…well, so are you, expecting everyone to hurry out of your way because you’re so busy and important that you can’t wait a few minutes. I bet you’re the same types of wankers people that drive up my back when I’m driving at the speed limit in a residential area or that tut and barge when I’m out with my elderly mum or aunt, because they can’t walk fast enough for your liking.
For people like that I deliberately slow down. You can wait.

Totally agree with you. This morning I nipped into Costa for a takeaway coffee. Women behind the counter faffing with putting food in the ovens fair enough. She ignored me for a bit Then she turned and said I'll be with you in minute, again fair enough. However, she then waited for both ovens to finish, packaged up the toasted sarnies and put them in a huge takeaway bag...I assumed to pass to a customer who was waiting whi h would again be fine. Instead she just left them on the counter to go cold and turned to serve me.....no idea where the recipient of the hot lukewarm food was!

If you took forever then the toasties would probably go "over" and then she risks complaints or the smoke alarm going off or any number of problems. She doesn't know whether you're going to be a "regular latte please" or a "caramel frappe with oat milk and cinnamon and do you have any gluten free cookies, I can't see them? What do you have that's gluten free? Can I see them please? And have you got any other crisps out the back I don't fancy plain, and.....".
