To think Palestine Action isn't a terrorist group?

NotDarkGothicMama · 23/06/2025 07:28

I don't agree with what they've done (breaking into military bases to vandalise planes), but I don't understand why they're being proscribed. Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil have caused far more damage to property and general annoyance.

Arrest and prosecute the people who commit criminal acts, absolutely, but this is setting the bar for branding protestors "terrorists" far too low.

Palestine Action is not a terrorist group.

if that’s all you need to do to be labelled a terrorist, then Israel should be labelled as a whole terrorist state for its own actions.

Typical oppressor behaviour - always wanting its victims to be docile and quiet. Resistance is not always peaceful.

Can we call Palestine and entire terrorist state, then? Or, indeed, Iran?

Well, the Gaza Strip is run by a terrorist organisation called Hamas. The same organisation who run the Gaza health ministry there, Hamas. The same terrorist organisation who committed mass rape, murder and abduction in Israel on 7th October.

So do we call Gaza a terrorist state , given its run by (its government is) a terrorist organisation called Hamas?

It’s a quandary.

Penny Mordunt is saying these planes were the type used to fly aid to Gaza.

Well yes, do they have a coherent government that is willing to work within the usual parameters of the international framework?

"According to the UK Defence Journal, defence sources said this was ‘inaccurate’ and that RAF Voyagers based at Brize Norton are primarily used to support Operation Shader, the UK’s ongoing mission against Daesh in Iraq and Syria.
They said the aircrafts were not used to support Israeli operations."

The planes that fly aid to Gaza from Brize Norton appear to be a different type. https://www.raf.mod.uk/news/articles/uk-participates-in-largest-international-aid-drop-into-gaza1/

I’m sure PAG will be really happy to find they’ve done Isis a solid.

I wonder if anyone is surprised to find that there are no planes that fly from Brize Norton to bomb Gaza but there are planes that fly from Brize Norton to bring aid to Gaza.

Well, it doesn't fit a certain narrative, does it.

God I just had a thought, there probably are PAG who think that Isis are anti-colonialist and anti-imperialism and we should definitely be not bothering them.

That airbase is used to supply Akrateri in Cyprus which is involved in spying missions over Gaza to target individuals. The damage was designed to stop that supply. We’re complicit in the genocide in Gaza. Palestinian Action are trying to prevent a more serious crime by damaging the weapon.

Edited

It’s called Akrotiri. When you’re this ill informed and ignorant of basic facts why on earth should anyone be interested in your opinion?

SameDayNewName · 23/06/2025 20:07

Personally, I think if you don't recycle properly, pay your taxes, earn a good wage and keep to a perfect BMI, you're a terrorist. Because it inconveniences the state. Pretty sure that's the definition.

This is the stupidest thing I've read all day, and I read India Willoughby tweeting that she was 'Team Iran'.

True, though "Akrateri" is probably as close as many get after a few Kokinelis. 😉

I would think that those in the position to make the decision have more information than we do.

Or more self interest

It’s property and money, not human lives, which the jets if launched would have destroyed .

If the plane can't fly and Russia attacks tomorrow are you going to defend us?

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/06/2025 21:48

Snowstorming · 23/06/2025 18:30

also we wouldn’t be “virtually on a war footing” if Israel was stopped from acting with impunity. The government is literally bombing an entire population and interfering with innocent civilians on a daily basis, yet that seems to be offensive if we bring it up?

Have you heard of countries called Russia and Ukraine at all?

Thankyou for this link. This thread's been a really interesting read. I've read it all and Yvette Cooper's statement and changed my mind. I found these parts of her statement particularly eye-opening:

...The Sherif, in passing custodial sentences for the attackers’ violent crimes, spoke of the panic among staff who feared for their safety as pyrotechnics and smoke bombs were thrown in the area where they were evacuating...

...In late 2023, Palestine Action released “The Underground Manual”. The document encourages the creation of cells; provides practical guidance on how to carry out activity against private companies and government buildings on behalf of Palestine Action; and provides a link to a website which contains a map of specific targets across the UK...

I don't support Iran or Hamas or the Israeli government BTW. I do want to be able to engage in lawful protest if I want to, including acts civil disobedience, without being labelled a terrorist though.

That's interesting that you've changed your mind.

I have been reading a book about how people change their minds - and it's a really interesting process - and one that has to come from the person themselves.

Being given facts doesn't change people's minds. But getting people to think about how strongly they support something and what reasons there could be for not supporting something fully, exploring doubts, does play a role

The RAF doesn't have cargo planes so they can deliver sweeties to little children. The purpose of these planes is to support military objectives, which frequently include killing people: I'm not sure whether these planes themselves are armed or carrying bombs is really that important.

And that is why interfering with them is a very serious offence with very serious consequences.

Those signs outside military bases are not for show. They have meanings and consequences.

Potentially 14 years on jail

Of course they aren't a terrorist group. They haven't done anything to cause terror, which I believe is a fundamental requirement of a terrorist group. They haven't been violent or intimidated anyone. Neither have they threatened to be violent.

They have committed a crime but that's not the same.

Unlikely, don’t you think? Though the OP has changed her mind so perhaps I’m being unduly cynical.
