I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

@Welliesandtweedyou sound like a PITA. Do you tut and make comments at work about others dress sense as well? How would you feel if they pulled you up on your grammar? Live and let live op.

erm maybe because your a woman. Most women now look like blokes from behind. They might aswell wear a sack because the clothes aren’t doing them any justice 😬

Woman is quite simply "adult female human". It has no bearing in what shoes or clothing that adult human needs to wear.

Femininity is a social construct and changes with fashions and times.

Please learn what things mean if you'd like to use them to back up your points.

But I think most sliders and sandals look ugly. It’s all subjective, isn’t it?

Ok but I’m just saying what looks better with a summer dress. I don’t know what’s ugly about a nice slider

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 23/06/2025 21:44

12doublerolls · 23/06/2025 21:14

Ever heard of a pretty slider? I’m not talking about proper sandles like you’d get from Clark’s 🤢

I've never seen sliders that look nice imo. I love my "proper" sandals though.

Usually SM is full of posts about people keeping their ugly feet covered in summer. Yet now people are saying they should be bare. I often see people saying French pedicure with white tips look awful, yet now they are being recommended.

Anyway. My Feet are ugly. Half a life of Ballet does that. And my hairy toes are the easiest way to know my feet are healthy according to my diabetes nurse.

If anyone cares I wore a beautiful, floaty feminine dress today. It's cheap sweaty shit that my friend was so pleased to buy me on shein. I only wear it on days I can spend in front of a fan though as its too hot to wear out.

News flash

Women can dress however they want

They don't have to "look" like anything

I suspect more than one poster on this thread is on a great big wind-up.

Toenail polish with a carefully-placed white stripe across the tip, eh? (Snigger).

Jesus Christ. It’s like living in a time warp. People of either sex can wear anything they like. No woman owes anyone femininity. What people choose to wear has no impact on anyone else. Why do you care?

its Just my opinion. If you’re a woman why would you not want to be feminine? And I don’t mean it to attract men I mean for yourself. Wear something that actually fits and shows the shape of your body.

Because some people don't want to?

That’s the problem. Just because you “don’t have to” doesn’t mean you have to look mismatched like you don’t know how to dress yourself.

I'm shaped like a beach ball. I prefer not to show that off.

Because it’s an eyesore. Have some pride and a bit of femininity 🤷🏻‍♀️ anyway I’m not talking about the ones who look like they’ve are having a hard time I’m talking about the ones who made an effort to look that way 😬

Why should women have 'femininity'? I find it infuriating that this is expected of us in the workplace. Many women choose to dress more androgynously or don't like accentuating their figures / wearing figure-hugging clothes. That could be for a wide variety of reasons. Being stereotypically 'feminine' has nothing to do with one's professional competence or indeed pride and self-respect.

Just to labour the point... what about people with a more tomboyish style? Or people who don't like the shape of their bodies? Or people who just don't feel comfortable with or relate to stereotypical femininity? Or people who have religious or cultural reasons not to want to show their bodies? Not wanting to show off a 'feminine' body in feminine styles can relate to a lack of self-esteem and pride but not necessarily so. As a bisexual woman with a strong predilection for stereotypically butch lesbians, I can assure you that classic feminity is not an aesthetic that everyone feels drawn to! (and I appreciate you're not saying that dressing should be about trying to attract others in the workplace but just want to illustrate the point that not everyone likes looking at the same things...)

I can’t stand those nails with white tips. It looks a bit cheap and tacky imo

But then I also think sliders look like you’re wearing your slippers to go out.

Femininity is based on stereotypes and style should be as individual as we are

Missanimosity · 23/06/2025 22:07

There is a difference in what you describe and scruffy, OP. I would consider scruffy greassy/unwashed hair, creased
or damaged clothing, dirty footwear, BO or, my most hated detail, dandruff on shoulders that is very obvious on dark clothing. However, if your clothes are clean and presentable and you are washed you can't really say scruffy. Coloured hair has nothing to do with scruffy. In my work we need to wear smart shoes, no trainers allowed. A bit shitty considering we also have to be able to run or put up a fight if needed due to the people we are dealing with and the nature of the job. But we wear the no heel smart loafers. Judging people by the quality of their clothing is awfull and snobby. I understand what you say but I don't think you explained it well. When I see how some people turn up for court I can't believe it. When I was dating if a man would turn up in joggers I would write them off straight away. Same for weddings, church etc dress for then occasion and have respect for the event. However, I would never judge a professional by the clothes they wear. I worked for a very rich man who owed different estates and multiple homes. You would never say though, he never wore designer and when you saw him walking on the grounds you would mistake him for an employee at the stables. These people I respect because they know the value of their money, only new money and poor people show off with designer. Nowadays nobody, and I mean nobody, should tell a woman to wear dress and high heels. Not only it reduces us to arm candy, but also it promotes sexism and the sexualisation of the women. Women have to only dress for themselves and no one else. Who doesen't like, off you jog, thank you very much.
Edited for typos

You'd have had a fit if you'd seen me the other week, OP. I met a visiting dignitary in the trainers and (shock horror) no make-up either and held an entire meeting with them.

You know what though? Oddly, they didn't give a stuff about what I was wearing - just my ability to do my job.

Dare I admit, I sometimes am the visiting dignitary and I wear trainers and no make-up Shock
