I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

Totally agree. We even had a woman come to work in shorts showing off her ankle police tag ! (In a hospital office)

Welliesandtweed · 23/06/2025 20:52

Interesting how many people missed the point a bit. Being tired and starting to look a bit unkempt by the end of a night shift when you are doing the school run isn't quite what I meant. Equally, obviously a surgeon wears scrubs or a yoga teacher wears gym wear ( my yoga teacher always looks lovely actually & also very neat and tidy and professional for her role).

I meant, the number of men and women walking about in tracksuit bottoms and t-shirts and turning up at work looking like you are meeting friends to go to the pub.

I do often see a correlation between the people in their house clothes at work and their attitude. This does not mean ots a 100% correlating rule.

I don't go everywhere in heels and a tailored suit, but I do turn up to work in either a decent pair of trousers and a blouse/ nicely cut top or mostly a dress and flat shoes.

There is plenty of room to express personality and still be dressed appropriately for an occasion. That includes going to school events in smart casual clothes, going to work looking like you tidied yourself up for the occasion etc.

Edited to add- when I said cheap tops earlier, I didn't mean people should be in expensive designer clothes. I meant that awful shapeless, nearly see through "cheap" material. You can buy cheap and still look put together.

I'm now imagining an episode of Downton Abbey when they all came down to dinner in tracksuit bottoms. It wouldn't have had quite the same effect!!!

I’m a senior HR manager with one of the UK’s biggest wealth management companies with a 35 year professional career behind me.

I don’t own any shoes, trousers or blouses let alone any suits.

I spend good money on my outfits for socialising and always scrub up for a night out but as for workwear - casual does it

Why do you care so much?
You have NO idea why someone might be choosing to wear baggy clothes. Until recently I was wearing baggy clothes must of the time because I felt like shit and wanted to hide my body.

Also, who made you the shoe police?

Because it’s an eyesore. Have some pride and a bit of femininity 🤷🏻‍♀️ anyway I’m not talking about the ones who look like they’ve are having a hard time I’m talking about the ones who made an effort to look that way 😬

I walk round barefoot at home most of the time, my feet get plenty of air.

However I am yet to find a pair of sandles that do not cause me pain, because my feet seem to be really sensitive and most types of shoes cause some kind of blister.

So I'll stick with my trainers while I'm walking around outside thanks. Don't worry about other people's feet. It's weird.

Ever heard of a pretty slider? I’m not talking about proper sandles like you’d get from Clark’s 🤢

Ever heard of different preferences?

I actually spend most of my time in walking boots cos I'll be out with the dog or we'll be going somewhere outdoors and when the weather is warmer, the biting bugs are out in force and I react hideously to them. So I keep my feet covered because they're the closest thing to the grass they're usually hiding in.

WTF is 'a bit of femininity' and why is it necessary? Why can't people wear what they are comfortable in?

Sliders rub my feet, trainers and crocs don't.

Rh0dedenr0n · 23/06/2025 21:24

What an insane thread. The point OP seems unable to grasp is the subjectivity of “pride” in one’s dress. We don’t live in times where there are many old fashioned rules and expectations regarding clothing. There aren’t many occasions where it’s necessary to conform to a dress code. A person might have spent as long curating their “pink hair” and their band T-shirts or whatever, and feel thoroughly proud that they have dressed according to their own taste and individuality. This is far more worthy of admiration to me than knowing to wear a naice dress at sports day

(I’m chippy about private schools, I went to one and I HATED the snobbiness about clothing and labels and fitting in etc)

The original post is someone making a stupid complaint about the general public wearing trainers instead of sandals, and saying feet should be out more, basically because they prefer seeing that. This is obviously idiotic.

I pointed out that the sort of person with Strong Opinions about the sight of trainers is also liable to see things they don't like if the general public accedes to their request for more sandals when dress wearing. These things are not necessarily going to have anything to do with foot health.

These are general points, rather than about your feet specifically.

You’re talking about me. I own trainers and I wear them a lot but not with a dress, because to me it just looks scruffy and the two just don’t look right. To me trainers are some you wear with a gym set or with jeans or even shorts. But when you put a dress on with trainers it looks wrong. Dresses look better with a sandal or slider. If you’ve got ugly feet just say so. A nice pedicure with French tip gel will sort you right out 👍🏼

But I think most sliders and sandals look ugly. It’s all subjective, isn’t it?

I hate feet. I don't care if they have nice painted nails... feet gross me out. I don't want to see mine, so I don't own any sandals or sliders. I wear trainers with skirts and dresses. I don't think it looks scruffy, and is a look I like.

No I don’t. Not worn shoes since lockdown only trainers and Vans.

I used to have 100’s of pairs of shoes but nowadays I collect Adidas instead.
I’ve never worn trousers - never liked them and always struggled to find ones that fitted well so gave up.

Ive also never owned jeans in my life and I'm nearly 60.

I think if your trainers and dress are clean, and free from holes, then of course they don’t look scruffy. People seem to be conflating looks they don’t like with scruffiness, and that’s just not the case.

Well ye it would be weird. Because that's not the fashion of the time. It would equally be weird if they came down in flares, a naice dress, chinos, pencil skirt or polo shirt...

I agree. I hate sandals other than on holiday

I’ve got painted toenails but I just find sandals horrible footwear - had to google sliders as had no idea what they were but they look hideous imo

But then I love trainers and dresses together

Are you in a summer dress and walking boots on these walks?

What concerns me is people choosing clothing that enables them to be in denial about weight gain. Some of them if they had to consciously buy in a larger size might make some effort to control their weight.

Men in jogging bottoms for example.

Why does that concern you!

erm maybe because your a woman. Most women now look like blokes from behind. They might aswell wear a sack because the clothes aren’t doing them any justice 😬

Jesus Christ. It’s like living in a time warp. People of either sex can wear anything they like. No woman owes anyone femininity. What people choose to wear has no impact on anyone else. Why do you care?
