I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

OP I’m going to buck the trend on the thrashing you seem to be getting. We often walk through the park adjacent to our DC’s former primary school (they’re 18 and 21 now) and there is a huge difference in how people dress compared to 2008 through to 2018.

My DH remarked recently that “everyone looks poor” and that really resonated with me. They probably ARE poor compared with my lot back in the day, with such huge job security and ridiculously inflated rental and mortgage costs!

So nice clothes are unfortunately not a priority. It’s not a lifestyle choice sadly, but a necessity.

What rubbish! You don't have to look poor just because you're poor. You can always look presentable. Clothes cost nothing nowadays. Also, don't need to look dirty just because you're poor either. A bar of soap costs nothing and everyone has water in this country. We're not in the slums of India or Africa where they don't have water to drink let alone wash!

I'm 60 - old enough to remember the days of obligatory heels, makeup, and nylons for women in offices. No fun in the baking heat of the northern midwest US. I don't recall any of that nonsense making me or any of my colleagues from those days better at our jobs.

I’m 61.

Never wore heels or nylons at work. See to wear Dr Martens and trousers. This was fine in Manchester in the late 80’s.

Crushed23 · 23/06/2025 03:08

It’s up to your workplace to decide what staff can wear. I can’t think of a professional environment (you mention patients so I presume this is clinic of some sort?) that would allow coloured hair and band t-shirts, but I’m willing to be told I’m completely out of touch and this is normal now. I’ve always worked in stuffy finance, and everyone dresses smartly or smart-casual, whether client facing or not, so I haven’t noticed this phenomenon of dressing down at work tbh.

HarkerandBarker · 23/06/2025 03:09

Hoogey · 23/06/2025 00:17

But were you at work? I look like that when I'm cleaning the house, so it's acceptable, but not one job I can think of where that would be acceptable to wear for a paying job. Fruit picker maybe? Or.....?

She don't give a rat's arse if she looks like a rat's arse. What's wrong with that? 🤣

Society has gone to pot! The attitudes are absolutely wrenk! 💯 don't care, don't care what anyone thinks. The over inflated sense of self, and entitlement is 🤑

Never argue with a mad man!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 23/06/2025 03:13

I disagree that people no longer have pride.

l have an MA in street fashion.

The formality of society has changed. Thats w
hy people wear band t shirts. Personally id take pride in dressing like that rather than a formal outfit. You can still be proud of what you wear even if it’s casual.

You are hankering for more formal styles of dress. But society has changed which is reflected in dress styles.

I used to watch Hyacinth Bucket as a young adult. Her attitude was really dated to me even way back then. You sound like you want to be like her!

Empress13 · 23/06/2025 03:13

I think your user name says it all OP! To be fair times have changed. I remember people used to wear suits and dress up for going on the plane and both female and male office workers wore suits to work but its not like that anymore and tbh as long as you can do your job efficiently I don’t see what the issue is

You're out of touch. Your thoughts are in line with MILS mother- who would be touching 100.
Her daughter who is in her 60s, and friends were discussing exactly this the other day- and their sentiments were that they were thankful the stuffy times that their parents lived in were over, and that they chose relative comfort over what their parents ever did..

Well maybe your kids will have the same opinion of their parents when they grow up and make an effort to dress nice again. Bring it back in fashion 🤣
My mum took pride in herself, wore three pieces suits, flared trousers, mini skirts, heels. She was a hot mamma not a hot mess and I'll always remember her for the sexy sassy women she was, God rest her soul 🙏

It was sports day and afternoon tea to celebrate the end of school year. No dress code and yet everyone turned up nicely dressed and neat and tidy. Not one person had pink hair, garish colours or jogging bottoms on. It shows a sense of pride and respect for the occasion.

I think how you dress is a reflection of your standards. If you turn up at work looking like an unmade bed, then it indicates you don't have pride in your job and your standards. You don't dress for work like you are chilling out on a Sunday, clearing the garage or attending a gig.

I just think it's a shame that we moved away from the idea of dressing for the occasion, be it dinner, work, a tea party or turning up at your child's school.

I don't think I'm out of touch, I'm 43.

Edited

You just don't get to pass this judgement. Dress to make yourself feel good - great.

Judge others as garish, unprofessional etc for wearing something you wouldn't wear = insufferable snob.

TomPinch · 23/06/2025 04:17

Looking good and dressing up aren't the same, though there's an overlap. Someone with flaming blue hair and big splashes of tattoos, and statement clothes can look great. So can anyone who chooses their clothes carefully and doesn't have too many of them.

Unfortunately I'm surrounded by a sea of ultracheap clothes, probably from Temu, typically embroidered with Trumpville State University or something like that. 100% plastic, suits no one, rubbish after 5 wears, destined for landfill. One step from Idiocracy where the characters pull their clothes out of a dispenser.

I was in London recently, after a break of a few years. People there are definitely making less effort for whatever reason.

SatsumaDog · 23/06/2025 04:27

It’s up to the workplace to set an appropriate dress code. I would have to be smartly dressed for client meetings and the office. I work from home 99.9% of the time so as long as I look smart from the waist up if I’m on camera then there’s no issue. Generally I would only dress up to go to a restaurant if it was a special occasion or somewhere that required it. School sports day would be casual for me, especially if there was a parent’s race! I saw a chap have a nasty accident once when he tried to run a dad’s race in dress brogues.

Augustus40 · 23/06/2025 04:44

I prefer to wear smart casual not suits tights stuffy shirts etc. However I have noticed that more and more it is acceptable to look quite scruffy. Must be the fashion of today but personally I hate it. However I am 61 so my idea of smart casual is not today's fashion. Slightly off topic but I do look way more glamorous than many my age group however. I never look dowdy.

outerspacepotato · 23/06/2025 04:45

They work in health care if they're patient facing, of course they wear sneakers and loose fitting tops. If I had to wear street clothes dealing with sick people, yes, they would be cheap. Lots of body fluids sometimes don't wash out too well.

Coloured hair, WTF you on about? Many women dye their hair. Who cares if they're wearing t shirts? I might have a couple concert shirts myself.

You sound like a pompous jackass who got lost in the future and can't find your way back to the 1950s.

Richiewoo · 23/06/2025 05:21

Professionalism is doing the job well. What a person is wearing is of no concern.

Disagree, especially in certain jobs. I cannot stand scruffy dressers at work and I think it does reflect on the business, it also looks really unprofessional. It is possible to be well dressed and comfortable.

Wow. Someone has the courage to express an opinion and all you can do is attack and insult. You must be a millenial or gen Z ( triggered easily) or a slob.i didn't realise mum's could be so nasty to strangers.

It's interesting you should post this. We have an 18 year old intern in my office right now and she dresses beautifully. Very smart but still trendy, better dressed than some of the slobs we have and they are in their 40s. It's actually refreshing and reminds me of how office workers used to dress when I was her age.

If you dress well and it triggers anyone who is a scruff it's because they know they can do better if they could just be bothered. No shame in wanting to look nice. We're young for a lot less time than we're old. Make the most of it! If people don't want to keep up....it's their loss.
