I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

Disagree, especially in certain jobs. I cannot stand scruffy dressers at work and I think it does reflect on the business, it also looks really unprofessional. It is possible to be well dressed and comfortable.

What's scruffy to you? I am going to work this morning in a black v neck t shirt and 3/4 check legging/trousers and white pumps. Its an office, I'm a manager. Might see customers, might see suppliers.

Sparklybutold · 23/06/2025 05:54

@Welliesandtweedid have more issue with your snootiness tbh than whether someone wore a band tee.

Dressing casual doesn't mean scruffy.

Exactly. And I dont think a lot of posters know the difference

It does depend on the type of job too I think. Bin men don't need to dress up but might be more fanciable if they did albeit still smelly 😅

mickandrorty · 23/06/2025 06:06

Oh dear I would imagine for sports day i will be wearing shorts with a t-shirt 2/3 sizes to big with my rainbow hair piled up on top of my head, might have brushed it might not. neck fan and trainers, I'm peri I'm hot and I do not care.

Well at least they don't have to spend so much on trousers 😂

Dogaredabomb · 23/06/2025 06:07

I was sitting having a coffee on a bench and people watching. I noticed that not a single woman or girl who passed by was wearing heels, even ones in nice dresses 😂 I just felt so happy at the progress.

Well tbh. Heels are bad for your feet. So it's not just about image. Save them for special occasions where you have a big strong man to give you a piggy back home 🤣

I think there is a difference in ‘dressy’ clothes and smart, clean clothes as it were. I don’t care at all whether someone wears makeup or not. Or if they have gone overboard styling their hair. I also don’t care what footwear someone wears. I do judge scruffy people though. Wear what you like in private or whilst doing dirty jobs such as gardening or exercising. Out and about in public then I don’t think wearing dirty or stained clothes is acceptable.
There is a thread about men wandering about topless and the number of posters defending these men is enlightening. Have a sense of decorum ffs. Surely it’s not that difficult to wash your clothes or clean your shoes.

You will after menopause but it will be too late to care then my lovely 😍

Cheap T-shirts for work, band T-shirts Eeeee no way the audacity of some common folk ah op?

No excuse for being dirty! Or topless just because someone is a man. Decorum....do people even know what that word means anymore? How about clipping nails on the tube or stinking out the train with the smell of nail polish? Would these people know what Decorum means or even give a stuff if they did?

To say common folk means poor working class. They have more pride in my experience because they wouldn't want to stand out as poor. They clean obsessively too. On the main. They don't want to be judged but certain others that are more fortunate are so proud of their liberalisation and don't feel they have to justify themselves to anyone

It was sports day and afternoon tea to celebrate the end of school year. No dress code and yet everyone turned up nicely dressed and neat and tidy. Not one person had pink hair, garish colours or jogging bottoms on. It shows a sense of pride and respect for the occasion.

I think how you dress is a reflection of your standards. If you turn up at work looking like an unmade bed, then it indicates you don't have pride in your job and your standards. You don't dress for work like you are chilling out on a Sunday, clearing the garage or attending a gig.

I just think it's a shame that we moved away from the idea of dressing for the occasion, be it dinner, work, a tea party or turning up at your child's school.

I don't think I'm out of touch, I'm 43.

You sound like a snob!
If other people are comfortable wearing what they wear, why does it bother you so much?
Why does it matter if a person wants to show a bit of individuality with pink hair or by wearing something in, what you call, a garish colour?!
Life is too bloody short to be annoyed by what other people are wearing!

And life is too short to be so annoyed at someone else's opinion on a post. Don't you think?

Mummadeze · 23/06/2025 06:32

Really disliked the tone of your post and felt relieved that my DD didn’t go to a school like the one your children attend. Also, that my friends aren’t judgemental and we are all comfortable wearing whatever we please. It is hard making sure my autistic DD doesn’t look scruffy when we go out. She won’t wear anything other than tracksuit bottoms most of the time and invariably drops food down her top if we go out to lunch. She is a lovely person though and would just want to curl up and hide if she was aware people were thinking mean things about her appearance.

I don't think she was referring to autistic children 🤔

Where does that post say her DD is a child?

HalfWomanHalfFish · 23/06/2025 06:51

YANBU

People go around looking like absolute clips these days. A mum turned up to an event at my friend's child's nursery in pyjamas last week.!!!!!!

I'm also sick of seeing wobbly arses encased in skin tight cheap lycra on the school run every morning. I'm not saying everyone needs to be a size 8 but dress for your body shape ffs!

HazelBite · 23/06/2025 06:57

People will comment/notice whatever you wear and judge. I am a "dress" wearer, I find separates on the whole uncomfortable and prefer to wear a dress.
So when I'm dog walking, just out and about I often get comments like "Where are you off to?" The irony is these "dresses" are nothing special bought mainly from high street and supermarkets, and probably cost less than an average tee shirt and jeans.

Nottodaythankyou123 · 23/06/2025 06:59

All joking aside - I would say I’ve found it harder post-Covid / maternity leave / wfh. Basically years of leggings and t shirts without the world ending means means I actually struggle to find the energy to care 😅 it’s a slippery slope!

HighLadyofTheNightCourt · 23/06/2025 07:07

Surprise surprise… the op hasn’t been back 🙄
