I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

I work at a nursery and the uniform used to be standard work trousers, black shoes and a horrible thick, rigid tunic. I was so uncomfortable all of the time, and honestly it was distracting. The material made you sweat like no tomorrow in the summer and I felt miserable. Granted we're up and down off the floor all the time, covered in flour and gloop and changing nappies, so the 'professional' uniform never made any sense to me.

They relaxed the uniform massively a few years ago - leggings, polo tops, even a branded hoodie now all allowed. I can wear trainers/converse/crocs and I've never been happier. Being comfortable in what I wear certainly makes me able to concentrate on doing my job more.

You’re getting a slating from some OP, but I completely agree. It’s just so sloppy. It’s not like I’m looking for evening dress and suits and ties; just a step up from shit you would slob around the house in.

There was a thread on here a few months ago where someone marvelled at a colleague who looked very “put together” at all times, seemingly effortlessly. Lots of people responding to say they didn’t iron anything. Seriously?

But the OP thinks that women should dress in pwitty dresses and look all sweet and feminine. 🙄 It's not just about dressing smart/not being scruffy. The OP only aimed his posts at just women mostly too, for not all wearing dresses for sports day FFS!

I find the only people who get annoyed about this are those who like to dress up but feel conspicuous because others prefer to be comfortable.

💯👏

do you live in a Boden catalogue? And no hats. Wasn’t it 30 odd degrees. Hats would be the necessary choice. Also was there not a parents race - how did the mum participate in dresses? It doesn’t sound like the 2025 I want to live in which is full of diversity in every sense of the word.
I think how you dress is a reflection of your standards.
i think it’s a reflection in your personality and yours sounds short sighted, narrow minded and old fashioned. I believe in bringing your whole self to work and sometimes that includes being tired, comfy, ready for the gym, bloated and needing an elasticated waist, in band T-shirts, with pink hair whatever, just showing who you are each day.

And nobody knows what an iron is either.

I don't use an iron and I don't give a shit about that.

Ironing is a total waste of time. I gave it up over 20 years ago, which was very liberating and I would recommend that.

Good riddance!

same here with the iron, seems pointless especially when they crease almost soon as you put them on

😂 I haven't worn a dress since 1997. I like t-shirts, tops, jeans, and jeggings mostly. Coz I am a scruffy bastard! 😆

Seriously do you really think people on here need to defend themselves to the OP, and you? All the LOLz! 😂

Well you're all posting.................

One thing that puzzles me but I accept it must be fashionable for some: having very long ( fake) hair which is dyed and carefully curled, plus lots of makeup and lip fillers, fake eye lashes, Botox, fillers etc. Then wearing either joggers and a hoody or active wear. Seems a juxtaposition to me.

I'm just calling out the twats judging how others dress based on their own preferences. I dress in line with my ability to dress myself and make myself look presentable.

Funnywonder · 22/06/2025 21:11

I feel that most people do their best job when they are comfortable. And if that means trainers and band t shirts, fine by me. Most parents wore jeans to sports day at my children’s primary school. Better for sitting on the grass. Absolute plebs, the lot of us.

Same here as well. Clothes get dried on a hanger on the line and look fine.

I always assumed that was the point. Like the aesthetic equivalent of swatting for an exam but telling your mates you have never read a book and fluked an A. 'Oh, thanks, I just woke up looking like this".

rowenwren · 22/06/2025 21:12

Oh no! Not coloured hair!! 😱

I used to enjoy dressing up a bit. I liked coming up with outfits and feeling put together, even on my limited budget. But I don't have the time or money for it anymore.

Online shopping feels like wading through a swamp, and the high street brands I used to rely on have all gone out of business or been subject to enshittification. I'm not paying three times the price of a Primark jumper for something that isn't better quality. I'm tired and in pain more often than I used to be, so comfort is a bigger priority than before. And like many people, I'm disillusioned with workplace BS. Companies offer workers less than they ever have. Arbitrary rules about what you can wear just feel like an insult in that context. Requiring employees to spend more on expensive clothing, and / or suffer discomfort, is galling when it comes from an employer paying the bare minimum they can legally get away with, who thinks that gives them the right to treat their staff like Barbie dolls.

Life has become a grind. Most of us are just too burned out to care. We're exhausted, not lazy.

To be clear, my clothes aren't dirty, covered in holes, or inappropriately revealing. But they are low effort. And it's a plain ponytail and bare minimum make up too. I just don't have the bandwidth to worry about looking pretty every day. That's a luxury.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 22/06/2025 21:18

I do agree with you to some extent, OP, but it’s The Law on MN that women (especially) can wear whatever the hell they like, however scruffy/trashy looking, inc. pyjamas for the school run.

NattyFox · 22/06/2025 21:18

I'm very much committed to jeans and a nice top.

You had me until the final paragraph.

I wouldn’t bet on it. I worked at a private school last year. Some of the parents were lovely. Some of them were hideous superior stuck up snobs. I could not wait to leave. There are people like this out there to avoid at all costs.

TrickyD · 22/06/2025 21:20

It was sports day and afternoon tea to celebrate the end of school year. No dress code and yet everyone turned up nicely dressed and neat and tidy. Not one person had pink hair, garish colours or jogging bottoms on. It shows a sense of pride and respect for the occasion.

I bet there were not many tattoos on show.

Exactly this. ^ Nobody goes around with dirty, scruffy clothes full of holes, and it's ludicrous to say anyone does. 🙄 Most people like to dress casually, especially on Sports Day!

AngryLikeHades · 22/06/2025 21:21

There's scruffy and there's scruffy, @Welliesandtweed, even then people should be cut some slack depending on their circumstances.
You sound like my narcissistic mother when you are appalled by coloured hair, she hated it when I had my hair short and blonde and told me repeatedly what she thought of it.
Try not to be Hyacinth Bouquet, it's really not your business.
