I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

I agree and for people saying it doesn't matter it does and yes wearing leggings and tops with holes bleeds into your attitude at work.

No it doesn't. 😆 What utter rot!

This simply isn’t true…

that’s why many professions have a dress code.

Admin type roles though don’t tend to

There are jobs where it is a safety issue.. hard hats hi Vis, lab coats, scrubs. That is part of doing the job well.

Wearing high heels, dress and 3 layers if make up is someone's control issue. It doesn't impact on how well you do the job. It only says the people you deal with who make this judgement are not able to see past that.

Elevenor · 22/06/2025 20:48

Flashahah · 22/06/2025 20:37

And none of those options are because of cost cutting? It’s due to band t shirts?

They're not just band t shirts though, they're loose fitting band t shirts.

I think Diana maybe came 2nd. But all the other mums were dressed similarly!
Parents races are insane these days. When my DC started school we would have a laugh and sort of jog along in our flip-flops or whatever we had on. By the time they left parents had spent the previous few weeks training and turned up in full on running gear, warming up etc before hand. It wasn't fun any more.

Our parent races were hilarious - especially the obstacle course! Although one year DS did have DH and I training around a course he built in the garden - I got stuck in his football net!

GanninHyem · 22/06/2025 20:49

Not one person had pink hair, garish colours

Hold on, is this about people dressing scruffy or you being judgemental? You can be perfectly well turned out and appropriately dressed with coloured hair and clothing, but you know that.

You dropped your spoon by the way, mind you don't pick up the shitty end

Yeah, coz of course every mum at sports day was in a pwitty frock, and all the dads were in smart shirts and chinos! 😆

Methinks the OP is posting from the 1950s!

SaturdayDream · 22/06/2025 20:50

I have noticed too, as have friends as it’s came up in conversation.

IwasDueANameChange · 22/06/2025 20:50

Also I think people are more focussed now on health and fitness. They wear clothes suited for movement - walking some or all of the way to work or fitting in a few steps at lunch. They choose shoes that are comfortable and good for your feet and avoid constricting pointed pumps or high heels which are terrible for your feet, knees & overall gait.

Lots of younger people now avoid old fashioned, damaging ways of styling hair like hot brushes & the like in favour of much healthier natural curls etc.

Theshsmpoo · 22/06/2025 20:50

I forgot what numbskulls we are dealing with op, look at the shitty comments if you dare to have a different opinion. Some of you already sound like you must be a delight to work with.

Welliesandtweed · 22/06/2025 20:05

Yes. Two actually as so many people took part. A Dad's race as well. We (parents) also got to do a sack race which was excellent fun, despite my apparent stuffy boring side which thinks you should dress well.

I'm genuinely surprised that I'm the only person that thinks like this. Therefore I must be in the wrong.

Christ, there's no way I'd do a sack race in a dress! I'd be too worried about going arse over tit and giving everyone a view of my underwear!

You were suggesting that if people wear a tshirt and jeans to work that the 'scruffiness' bleeds into their work, which is utter rot. You never said you meant ONLY at YOUR workplace.

IwasDueANameChange · 22/06/2025 20:52

If you already had an end of term sports day & it was on a saturday, I am guessing this was a private school. State schools in England have 5 more weeks yet, and would never have an event on a saturday except the school fair.

Op is obviously better than us!

Certainly better than me who went out skinny jeans, Rolling Stones t shirt and converse to meet the local vicar on behalf of my mother! Oh and pink hair as my new colour is fading. Mother didnt mind and neither did the vicar....and I am 52 so up yours.

SnoopyPajamas · 22/06/2025 20:54

I used to enjoy dressing up a bit. I liked coming up with outfits and feeling put together, even on my limited budget. But I don't have the time or money for it anymore.

Online shopping feels like wading through a swamp, and the high street brands I used to rely on have all gone out of business or been subject to enshittification. I'm not paying three times the price of a Primark jumper for something that isn't better quality. I'm tired and in pain more often than I used to be, so comfort is a bigger priority than before. And like many people, I'm disillusioned with workplace BS. Companies offer workers less than they ever have. Arbitrary rules about what you can wear just feel like an insult in that context. Requiring employees to spend more on expensive clothing, and / or suffer discomfort, is galling when it comes from an employer paying the bare minimum they can legally get away with, who thinks that gives them the right to treat their staff like Barbie dolls.

Life has become a grind. Most of us are just too burned out to care. We're exhausted, not lazy.

IwasDueANameChange · 22/06/2025 20:55

I'd also add (as a line manager leading a team of forty...) I've got an italian lady in the team who dresses very smartly, always has immaculately done hair etc.

She's useless & does no actual work. One of her peer group is much more casually dressed with a few piercings and dyed red hair & is by far the most productive & competent in the team.

I wore jeans, t shirts and trainers to work and I was bloody good at my job. It didn't affect the way I worked at all

Gepl · 22/06/2025 20:57

You’re getting a slating from some OP, but I completely agree. It’s just so sloppy. It’s not like I’m looking for evening dress and suits and ties; just a step up from shit you would slob around the house in.

There was a thread on here a few months ago where someone marvelled at a colleague who looked very “put together” at all times, seemingly effortlessly. Lots of people responding to say they didn’t iron anything. Seriously?

Exactly this. Utterly ludicrous to suggest that it would!

It was sports day and afternoon tea to celebrate the end of school year. No dress code and yet everyone turned up nicely dressed and neat and tidy. Not one person had pink hair, garish colours or jogging bottoms on. It shows a sense of pride and respect for the occasion.

I think how you dress is a reflection of your standards. If you turn up at work looking like an unmade bed, then it indicates you don't have pride in your job and your standards. You don't dress for work like you are chilling out on a Sunday, clearing the garage or attending a gig.

I just think it's a shame that we moved away from the idea of dressing for the occasion, be it dinner, work, a tea party or turning up at your child's school.

I don't think I'm out of touch, I'm 43.

Edited

I couldn’t disagree with this more.

most clothes for me are uncomfortable, except pjs, to varying degrees. So a push up underwired bra and heels would render my brain ONLY focussing on how uncomfortable I am and can’t wait to get it all off. I’m ok in normal ish work clothes, but love to get home of an evening; strip it all off and get in to my pjs. I prioritise that before even a wee when I get home.

so, given that, you couldn’t be more wrong, for me, that it’s a reflection of my work standards. I would work far far better if I could wholly focus on my job rather than focussing on my bra straps.

I am really really not alone. Probably ND. And there’s thousands of us who have been conforming to society’s norms for decades when we would be far far more productive if we were comfy.
