I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

I have a bigger issue with typos to be honest. Taking care of those is important to me.

Just about to say the same.

Does it affect their work? Is their typing stifled by a band t-shirt?

BIWI · 22/06/2025 19:35

Thank goodness people can wear clothes that they’re comfortable in, rather than having to wear stuffy, uptight stuff like buttoned-up shirts, ties and suits, with awful high heels.

Unescorted · 22/06/2025 19:35

Professionalism is doing the job well. What a person is wearing is of no concern.

PractisingMyTelekenipsis · 22/06/2025 19:35

The best nurse I ever worked with lived in band tees. She was bloody brilliant at her job.

BIWI · 22/06/2025 19:35

And as for ‘nice dress’? Excuse me while I eye-roll.

TaggieO · 22/06/2025 19:36

Does it affect their ability to do their job in any way? No.

LandSharksAnonymous · 22/06/2025 19:36

You'd have had a fit if you'd seen me the other week, OP. I met a visiting dignitary in the trainers and (shock horror) no make-up either and held an entire meeting with them.

You know what though? Oddly, they didn't give a stuff about what I was wearing - just my ability to do my job.

Elevenor · 22/06/2025 19:37

Trainers, band t shirts AND coloured hair? The horror!

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 22/06/2025 19:37

I find the only people who get annoyed about this are those who like to dress up but feel conspicuous because others prefer to be comfortable.

Jamesblonde2 · 22/06/2025 19:37

Yes, it’s lovely to see old photos and videos of people making an effort (obviously if they were a pauper that’s difficult).

ScrewedByFunding · 22/06/2025 19:38

Fashion changes, maybe you're just out of touch now?

Iloveyoubut · 22/06/2025 19:38

OP you lost me at cheap. I’d never ever judge someone on the price or quality of their clothing.

3KidsPlusDdog · 22/06/2025 19:38

Coloured hair? Confused

XenoBitch · 22/06/2025 19:38

I probably look like a right scruff, but I am comfortable. That is all that matters to me.

SpanThatWorld · 22/06/2025 19:38

"every woman was in a nice dress"

Do you live in the 1950s? I can't imagine making an effort to dress up to watch children running round a field.

We're all in scrubs when we're patient-facing. My professionalism appears to be intact.

Do your kids go to school in a place called Stepford?

KissMyArt · 22/06/2025 19:39

Nice clothes can't rally make up for poor literacy in any job OP.

But if it makes you feel better I suppose?

CandyLeBonBon · 22/06/2025 19:40

I’m more concerned about poor spelling and grammar tbh.

missmollygreen · 22/06/2025 19:40

They have pride in how they dress, they just dont dress how YOU think they should

PE kits and nice dresses on a Saturday afternoon? I’d rather stick pins in my eyes.

Saturdays involve trips to the park in leggings, trainers and something else. Today was an oversized shirt.

We casual dress for work and it doesn’t make my team any less effective. If anything I’ve found that people work best when they’re comfortable.

Exactly this.

Started a new job earlier this year and asked about the dress code. Manager shrugged and said to wear whatever I'm comfortable in, if it's decent enough to be wearing in the street then it's decent enough for work as clothing has no impact on my ability to fulfil my duties. It's a public-facing role in a professional field and no one seems at all bothered by what anyone else is wearing.

LlynTegid · 22/06/2025 19:43

What concerns me is people choosing clothing that enables them to be in denial about weight gain. Some of them if they had to consciously buy in a larger size might make some effort to control their weight.

Men in jogging bottoms for example.
