I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

Sports day on a Saturday tells us all we need to know!

Was just about to say the same 😂

What’s a ‘garish’ colour, OP? Is there a handbook we should all be referring to for the occasion-appropriate colour spectrum? Or is this something known only to those who don’t have to buy ‘cheap’ clothing and whose kids attend school on a Saturday?

Jamesblonde2 · 22/06/2025 19:37

Yes, it’s lovely to see old photos and videos of people making an effort (obviously if they were a pauper that’s difficult).

We're all paupers now you know, it's the cost of living (except if you are posh and wear wellies and tweed)

Overtheatlantic · 22/06/2025 20:05

I don’t know why you’re getting such a hard time, OP. I sort of know what you mean, but I was in a posh area of London recently and many people were dressed the part and I thought they looked like assholes.

Bubblebubblepoppop · 22/06/2025 19:59

Was there not a mum's race?

Yes. Two actually as so many people took part. A Dad's race as well. We (parents) also got to do a sack race which was excellent fun, despite my apparent stuffy boring side which thinks you should dress well.

I'm genuinely surprised that I'm the only person that thinks like this. Therefore I must be in the wrong.

In this heat I have even gone in braless (not customer facing ) - my comfort is more important than others' opinions of me

Horror!

Trainers, band t shirts AND coloured hair? The horror!

If ever there was a case for reinstating the laugh emoji...

I've never surveyed the other parents to ask if they are drug dealers. They don't look like drug dealers but maybe they don't have a type?

No white Range Rovers either that I've noticed.

Not really a funny school. Mostly, lovely down to earth families. Of the parents I know, there are quite a few business owners of varying sorts, a farrier, a bespoke carpenter, couple of doctors, some farmers and some in family businesses.

DH is a doctor - wears jeans and trainers to work with whatever is his favourite cartoon T-shirt - patients love him.

Vivienne1000 · 22/06/2025 20:06

I work in a school. Staff have a dress code, which I totally agree with. You can’t expect pupils to accept uniform rules, if you look scruffy. That’s just disrespectful. I personally enjoy wearing nice clothes and the pupils comment ‘ oh miss, where did you get that top, it looks nice on you’.
Why would we wear leggings or jeans? I personally have never owned leggings and that is my choice. Each to their own I guess.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 22/06/2025 19:45

Never known a nurse that didn't wear a uniform....

You've not known many nurses then. Loads of nursing roles in all branches don't require uniform.

It was sports day and afternoon tea to celebrate the end of school year. No dress code and yet everyone turned up nicely dressed and neat and tidy. Not one person had pink hair, garish colours or jogging bottoms on. It shows a sense of pride and respect for the occasion.

I think how you dress is a reflection of your standards. If you turn up at work looking like an unmade bed, then it indicates you don't have pride in your job and your standards. You don't dress for work like you are chilling out on a Sunday, clearing the garage or attending a gig.

I just think it's a shame that we moved away from the idea of dressing for the occasion, be it dinner, work, a tea party or turning up at your child's school.

I don't think I'm out of touch, I'm 43.

Edited

You’re 43 but have a stick up your ass that dates from about 1843, maybe?

I can’t fathom dressing up to watch children run around a field and stifle giggles at the sixth form vs staff tug of war.

And chinos are disproportionately worn by total wankers, anyway. Sorry, nice chino-wearers, but it’s like golf. Nice people do, I’m sure, play golf, but it gets a bad crowd.

luckylavender · 22/06/2025 20:07

This reminds me of my University Days in the early 80s. Me with my Valleys accent & the public school people making assumptions. Lots of them were as thick as pig shit.

Justgettingbye · 22/06/2025 20:07

I think there’s a balance. Low cut tops, short shorts with arse hanging out the bottom, belly tops not really for work. Other than that I don’t care as long as someone can do the job that’s what matters. I liked it when there was a uniform at my job as that took the option away of thinking about what to wear

Hobnobswantshernameback · 22/06/2025 20:07

I’d bet it’s in the South. Northern kids are too busy in bus shelters to be going to school on a Saturday.

(As a former northern kid)

Mum2jenny · 22/06/2025 20:09

I can’t remember the last time I wore a dress, but I don’t do the school run, so do I get an exemption?

Songbird54321 · 22/06/2025 20:09

Well, I feel attacked. I have coloured hair and am currently wearing an oversized t-shirt and gym leggings. I do not attend a gym but they are comfortable. Should I feel the need to leave the house I would put trainers on. I’d wear similar to the office, maybe substitute the leggings for jeans.
You may think I’m a scruff but I’m not too fussed. My initial opinion of you isn’t particularly favourable either.

thepariscrimefiles · 22/06/2025 20:10

Welliesandtweed · 22/06/2025 19:51

No hats. I'm really surprised that anyone can't comprehend wearing a dress to the sports day. It can't be that unusual if almost everyone turned up in a dress without it being specified?

Is it a private school?

LadyKenya · 22/06/2025 20:10

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 22/06/2025 19:37

I find the only people who get annoyed about this are those who like to dress up but feel conspicuous because others prefer to be comfortable.

Being dressed up, and comfortable is not an impossibility.

DancingNotDrowning · 22/06/2025 20:11

I like clothes and dressing up and always admire people who are dressed immaculately appropriately for the occasion whether that’s practical outdoor weather for a dog walk; perfectly tailored crepe for ascot; or linen shorts and a Panama for the beach.

I think in an office a degree of formality is appropriate and truthfully I’d silently judge someone who was looking tatty and untidy.

Pigtailsandall · 22/06/2025 20:11

Maybe pay your secretaries more if they are all in "cheap tops"?

OhSoSalty · 22/06/2025 20:11

I prefer people who dress comfortably to people who are judgemental cunts
