I've increasingly noticed that people are getting scruffier and scruffier in how they dress.

Some of the secretaries where I work come in, In trainers, band t shirts, coloured hair, loose fitting, cheap tops. I wouldn't do the garden in some of the outfits I see. They aren't typically patient facing but on occasion are. I think it really lacks professionalism to turn up scruffy to work.

Same for people out for an evening meal in jogging bottoms.

On Saturday we had sports day at school and every woman was in a nice dress and men in chinos / short chinos and shirts. Children all in proper PE uniform. It was so refreshing to see.

I know what you mean, OP. Some things don't need saying but sadly it is not obvious to those who get defensive.

YABU because this is all so subjective. What’s professional to me won’t be to you. I don’t find half of Wallis or Apricot professional, whereas a lot of people would.

Band tees, oversized, trainers are all very fashionable now and what is perceived as professional has evolved. There will only be a few professions (lawyers for instance) where formal attire will be expected.

RichHolidayPoorHoliday · 22/06/2025 20:12

Yes, we are a lot more scruffy, and it takes effort. I am guilty too sometimes.
I don't know about nice dress, but sometimes I do wonder why people obviously don't care about their appearance at all. It's not a sign of intelligence or superiority to be scruffy.

That said, a lot of kids in private schools look a right state 😂, it's nearly a badge of honour not to wear anything decent fitting, would show how insecure you are.

Lazyjunedays · 22/06/2025 20:13

Coloured hair?! Pass me the smelling salts.

Icreatedausernameyippee · 22/06/2025 20:13

I take no pride in how I look and I notice that I'm in the majority where I am.
Life is busy. I am busy.
I'm already up at by 6 to wrangle my kids for school and that's usually after 5-6 hours of sleep as it is.
I'm not getting up earlier to do my hair and makeup and select an outfit that will need to be kept pristine in order to express that I've made an effort. I'm going to shower, brush my teeth and hair and put on clean clothes and forget about it until I do the same again for bed time.
Congratulations for having the time and motivation to make an effort on a regular basis. You're better than all of us scruffy tramps.

Iambouddicca · 22/06/2025 20:13

School sports day on a Saturday- must be a private school where everyone is keeping up with the Jones’.

Whatwaswrongwiththatusername · 22/06/2025 20:13

Ugh…gosh, you’re so right, and what about those in “wellies and tweed”?! Wellies and tweed, I say!! Have never seen anything so sloppy and unprofessional. I wouldn’t even clean the loo in those!
Absolutely vile. Common as muck.

ETA: @Welliesandtweedat least they can change their clothes and their hair etc, your self righteousness and judgy personality cannot be.

Sports day on a Saturday tells us all we need to know!

You beat me to it!

Disco2022 · 22/06/2025 20:14

I take a lot of pride in my dyed hair and band t shirts I'll have you know. It's just not to your taste. Faffy dresses, boring hair and whatever shoes you think people should wear are not to my taste, I'm sure people who dress like a Boden advert take pride just the same as I do, but I have very little time to ponder these things, maybe a hobby would help you.

HeWhoMustNotBeNamed · 22/06/2025 20:15

Pink hair? It wasn't...box dye was it? I hope you have notified the church.

Fangisnotacoward · 22/06/2025 20:16

Why does wearing a band t shirt and having coloured hair matter? How does this affect their ability to do their job?

Frankly I'm glad people can dress more comfortably these days, rather than having to squeeze into a pencil skirt, with heels and pearls.

Weepixie · 22/06/2025 20:16

I'm genuinely surprised that I'm the only person that thinks like this. Therefore I must be in the wrong

I always dress well as does everyone around me, it’s a lot to do with where I live, so I do notice a difference in certain ways when I travel. But unlike you I’d never comment on it and I’d certainly never want to be as snooty and judgemental as you’ve unfortunately made yourself appear to be.

thatsthatsaidthemayor · 22/06/2025 20:16

I agree. I have completely switched from under dressing to not giving a fuck and over dressing. We were in a nice restaurant once. Older couple dressed really nicely, clearly a special occasion for them. Young couple t shirt and jeans. I think their dress code devalued their experience. I doubt that they registered. I did thought

blueshoes · 22/06/2025 20:17

It does not really take that much effort. If there is no time, then just wear a simple 'uniform' to work - plain trousers or skirt and rotate the top. I think trainers are fine, unless in certain professional settings where you are meeting clients.

It is possible to be neat, professional and comfortable.

Flashahah · 22/06/2025 20:17

OhSoSalty · 22/06/2025 20:11

I prefer people who dress comfortably to people who are judgemental cunts

I demand the laughing emoji is reinstated!

I've had pink hair in the past and this post is making me think about having it again! The problem is I'm job hunting and might come across someone like the OP. I presume my make up free face, pink hair and feet in flat comfortable shoes would make me an immediate no!

Tiredbut · 22/06/2025 20:19

I agree OP. Most people look like they’ve just rolled out of bed these days. However I’m told conservative dressing is on the rise (hemline theory) and in turn people will start to dress smarter.

I love a nice gym set too, but if I’m wearing it to go about my day I make sure it’s matching and good quality and styled correctly. I really appreciate when people take pride in how they look and consciously am trying to step more into tailoring myself.

rainbowsandraspberrygin · 22/06/2025 20:19

OP - I’m interested to know the kind of school? Sports day on a Saturday is impressive….

Proudtobeanortherner · 22/06/2025 20:19

CleanShirt · 22/06/2025 19:34

Does it affect their work? Is their typing stifled by a band t-shirt?

I think that it does affect their work. If people cannot make an effort with their appearance and demeanour they are unlikely to (and don’t) work hard. In the workplace this comes across badly to clients and customers.
It is probably the case that there is a correlation between dress standards (amongst other things) and the woeful productivity rates in the country compared to others in the world.

You did thought what?

Honestly, like the OP you don’t put enough effort into proof reading! It would really improve your experience on a forum.

I’d be more likely to hire you that someone in a stuck up suit and looking uncomfortable. Definitely rock the pink hair!!!!
