Just a small experiment. Not a marketing gimmick, but I will explain shortly, once a few people have answered. Or not answered!
If you are British born, can you answer these five questions without Googling or using any other materials for the answers?
(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I?
(5) What significant event took place in 1284?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games?

@AtoCyes, I figured they were looking for Drake but I'm Team Magellan.

Donewiththisshit · 22/06/2025 16:19

British. Highly educated (multiple degrees), struggling with nearly all of these.

Pinepeak2434 · 22/06/2025 16:22

I got this right but after working it out. The rest I didn’t know!

Lazygardener · 22/06/2025 16:25
  1. 1690
  2. Handel
As for the rest, I have lived a full life without knowing any of them.
Yeahofcourse · 22/06/2025 16:31

Is 1284 when the DFS sale started?

genesis92 · 22/06/2025 16:36

I generally have very good general knowledge and could probably only answer 1 of these

TimeForATerf · 22/06/2025 16:48

None. Surely this test should be about British values, good English language skills and working your way around the UK government departments and the like not history.

On another note I am hugely impressed that DS’s friend’s Chinese wife passed this. Not that she shouldn’t, she’s very well educated with a British sense of humour, great language skills and kind and lovely but fuck me how do you revise for this shit?

There's a book.
A bit like driving theory?

JFDIYOLO · 22/06/2025 16:52

It's not about knowing useless obscure facts. It's about showing the commitment and making the effort to prepare. The actual info is irrelevant.

Obviously if the applicant is elderly, disabled, has a learning disability, comes from a culture where education was denied them (an Afghan woman, for example) it's potentially very excluding.

Ahhh fair enough, thanks for that.

although I maintain, it’s pretty pointless 😂 and would be better directed at more meaningful topics.

Londonrach1 · 22/06/2025 16:56

Results in my house ....dh all of them....me...I got the London one right. Dh shocked I didn't know a lot of the questions and blaming my 80s /90s education...... I went to a comprehensive whilst he went private from 11....

MistressoftheDarkSide · 22/06/2025 16:57

None, and I'm usually a mine of useless information, inherited from parents and grandparents, plus random acquisition - i can tell you why it's bad luck to whistle in a theatre for example.

Londonrach1 · 22/06/2025 16:57

Comedycook · 22/06/2025 16:33

😂

You might be right ..dh laughed out loud at that

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 17:02

"Musn't grumble" should be a test question. It mystifies me that British people don't grumble. I mean, how else can you cope with this world?

I am from the Commonwealth, so I learnt a bit of British history and quite a lot of literature. It is harder for non-Commonwealth citizens, but they use the book and practice harder. I know a Japanese friend made 70 pages of notes, as she was unfamiliar with the material.
