to ask you, if you are British born, to answer these six questions without Googling?

Just a small experiment. Not a marketing gimmick, but I will explain shortly, once a few people have answered. Or not answered!
If you are British born, can you answer these five questions without Googling or using any other materials for the answers?
(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I?
(5) What significant event took place in 1284?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games?

I knew absolutely none of these. The questions they ask are stupid. They should be asked questions about things that are actually helpful to know, like which side of the road to drive on, how to cross at a crossing, how many pennies in a pound.. things that they will actually NEED to come and live in this country.

But, of course, that's the point isn't it. Making it too difficult for anyone to actually pass.

Most people pass though. DH got a perfect score! Won't stop bragging about it😁

And yes, I have the booklet, in answer to the many people who have asked why I don't have the booklet. Also have online practice tests.

Fuck knows, does that mean they can send me "home?"
Tbf I don't think knowing any of those things really point to integration in a community, or being a decent person that would add to our country.

Hippee · 22/06/2025 15:27

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 11:59

Yes, indeed. Can you answer them?

I have long thought the questions are ridiculous. Much more important are "what would you do if you spilled someone else's drink in a pub" or questions about queueing etiquette.

Forgot Cook did not stop - well he must have stopped somewhere? What about fresh water etc?

Cook was my guess but I think I'm wrong. Was it Knox-Johnson? I have his book, I should have known better.

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 15:32

I actually liked the suggested question: Can you play loud music in public without headphones? This has become endemic, and is a massive bugbear for me.
Oh, and also there should be a question about shoplifting and abuse of public officials, which I am seeing quite a lot.

Silvers11 · 22/06/2025 15:32

I only got one - which was no 4.

I thought I knew the answer to no 1 too - but after Googling it, I'm not much the wiser. I knew who the first person to Circumnavigate the Globe was. But I suspect it was much more recent than that - like last century?

And I'm very much British born and Bred, with direct ancestors also all living in the British Isles for the last several hundred years!!

SabreIsMyFave · 22/06/2025 14:03

😆 Or Corrie!

For the Corrie theme you have to do the fake trumpet sound. C’mon! Every British citizen knows that surely! 😂

Ibelievetheworldisburningtotheground · 22/06/2025 15:35

Life in the UK test is an absolute piss take of a joke when most British people couldn't come close to passing it themselves.

thatsawhopperthatlemon · 22/06/2025 15:36

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 12:18

I made a mistake. I omitted the word singlehandedly in Q 1. That makes a big difference.

Yes, it does. It would have also been more fun if you'd asked which way round - eastwards or westwards. I knew the answer to both. 😂

What 😱 I have always known this as I live in an area where Orangemen march to celebrate it? Here it’s the closest Saturday to the 12th but in NI its usually the 12th July!

So do I!
I had guessed the 12th July 1666. But it was the 1st July 1690.

'What sound do we make when a glass gets broken in a pub?!' 🤣

Agree
and I did the test and paid 2k for citizenship

if you can’t even be bothered to read a little booklet and answer 20 questions about life in the UK, why should you get citizenship?

many countries have similar tests, Switzerland has interviews of the whole
family on why you should be a citizen and how you represent the values.

My lovely friend has just done this. She was revising for ages.
Finally got the ceremony where citizenship is awarded and is prouder than the proudest Brit I ever met.

Or we're spelling it the way Handel chose to spell when he settled in Britain (and where he later became a naturalised citizen).

Well you can't blame the man for giving up the fight 😆

Crochetandtea · 22/06/2025 15:55

newhouseplans · 22/06/2025 15:19

It's not "the rules of the country". It's some arbitrary questions that don't actually reflect real life in Brittain, dreamt up by a politician wanting to evoke nostalgic feelings of Britain being great, with the primary aim of getting people like you to vote for them.

Edited

Most people don’t care tbh! The rules of the country are completing the test! I never said the questions were on the rules of the country! Whatever they are tbh as Britain seems to accept anyone and everyone. An Australian model would be preferable.

Motheroffive999 · 22/06/2025 15:59

None

proximalhumerous · 22/06/2025 16:00

I think there should be alternative questions, such as:

What does "Mustn't grumble!" mean?
Which is the only biscuit that should be dunked in a cup of tea?
How should you answer "How do you do?"?
What is the correct etiquette on London Underground escalators?
Where does "The North" start?
Why did the chicken cross the road?

Etc.

Shetlands · 22/06/2025 16:02

(1) Sir Francis Drake? (I doubt he didn't stop anywhere) Sir Francis Chichester?
(2) 16 something
(3) ?
(4) Handel
(5) ?
(6) ?

Edited to add I'm British born and bred!

Which is the only biscuit that should be dunked in a cup of tea? I dunk must biscuits, except for the ridiculously chocolatey ones and maybe jammy dodgers. I have some chocolate hobnobs on the go, should I not be dunking those?

Being a bit of a history nerd, I can answer a couple of them.

1 The answer they're looking for is Sir Francis Drake. But many would say that it was actually the Magellan-Elcano expedition (Magellan died half way through and Elcano took over)

2 1st July 1690 (but it's commemorated on the 12th these days because the calendar changed)

4 George Handel. He's the guy that wrote the Messiah, Music for the Royal Fireworks, Zadok the Priest etc. Zadok the Priest was first performed at the coronation of George II the son of George I.

No idea about the others

GarlicMile · 22/06/2025 16:13

Another net zero Brit here 😏 and I'd like to thank @AtoC for your very interesting three answers!

I don't actually know as I don't drink tea (clearly I'm not British!) but I do think Rich Teas are revolting. Give me a dark chocolate Digestive any day.

BusyExpert · 22/06/2025 16:14

I can answer them all.

mathanxiety · 22/06/2025 16:15

I'm Irish, so the battle of the Boyne is an easy one - 1690.
1284 was the amalgamation of England and Wales under the Crown
Composer for George I was Handel.

No idea about the rest.

There was no fight, he changed it when he moved here.
