Just a small experiment. Not a marketing gimmick, but I will explain shortly, once a few people have answered. Or not answered!
If you are British born, can you answer these five questions without Googling or using any other materials for the answers?
(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I?
(5) What significant event took place in 1284?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games?

(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping? No idea
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne? I can recall it showing on my icalendar, but no idea of the date
(3) How many local authorities are there in London? No idea - and why would I as I am not interested in London's local authorities?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I? No idea
(5) What significant event took place in 1284? No idea
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games? I do not have any interest in sport, so no idea

LoveNRoses · 22/06/2025 12:11

MagpiePi · 22/06/2025 12:07

No idea for any of them.

I do know the Battle of the Boyne is on every single calendar I have.

Born British, hate tea, roast beef, the miserable british weather and the weird obsession with wearing shoes all the time.

Im British and couldn’t answer any.

@MagpiePi but what do you mean about weird obsession with shoes? I like to keep my feet warm and the weather usually sucks here. do you mean indoors? Yeah that’s gross but I don’t know anyone that does that. Also carpets are gross.

Taytayslayslay · 22/06/2025 12:11

British born, couldn't answer a single one.

Katemax82 · 22/06/2025 12:11

Nope

Serpentstooth · 22/06/2025 12:11

That is an insane assortment. Did Jacob Rees Mogg write it? I can answer 3 but not confidently. I'm also as British as its possible to be and am pretty good with general 1knowledge. Will I have to leave the country?

TeenToTwenties · 22/06/2025 12:12

Magna Carta
Handel
Chey Blythe???

Auburngal · 22/06/2025 12:13
  1. Robin Knox Johnson
  2. Around 1689
  3. 30 including city of London. I am not going to list them all
  4. Handel - Zadok the Priest is the most famous piece
  5. Edward I made Wales under direct rule of England - without googling, I don't know the name of this
  6. David Weir

Fringle · 22/06/2025 12:06

The only one I know is that 1284 AD was the year that Coronation Street started.

🤣🤣

Cyclistmumgrandma · 22/06/2025 12:14
  1. Unlikely to be Magellan as he wasn't English. Francis Drake maybe?
  2. Agree with 12th July but no idea of year
  3. No idea.
  4. Handel
  5. Thought it might be Magna Carta but I was wrong
  6. Don't know
And I thought my general knowledge was pretty good....

Many British people would not be able to answer these particular questions off the top of their heads. But there are many other questions in the test on government and voting, women’s rights, disabled rights etc the answers to which would be obvious to most (all) British citizens.

I think the whole point of this easy, multiple choice, test is that it requires a bit of preparation. This shows a degree of commitment to the idea of becoming a British citizen which should be seen as a serious step bringing with responsibilities in addition to rights.

Well, I didn't present it as multiple choice because it would take up too much space, so yes that would be easier. However, most of my British friends have flunked the test. They got about 30-40%. I need 75% to pass. Currently averaging about 61% but I am going to study the dates harder.

I got the time of pubs opening- 11 am- wrong too because I rarely go to the pub in the morning😁

I know quite a lot about the suffragettes and rights for women, but the trick question is: when did women get the right to vote in the UK on the same terms as men? Quickly now, without googling?

I can only answer question 3...i think there's 33 London brooughs...I could be wrong

BunnyLake · 22/06/2025 12:15

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 11:59

Yes, indeed. Can you answer them?

Nope

ReacherOMGyes · 22/06/2025 12:15

A freind of mine has just had to do this to apply for his ILR, it's crazy how much effort he put in (and money spent) to pass this. He's Australian so not like they don't have similar values, traditions, laws, etc to the UK. What any of these questions have got to do with integrating into modern UK life is beyond me.

I think like a pp said, it's actually to show a level of commitment to want to stay here (and get a few more quid out of people)

😂

TescoGold · 22/06/2025 12:15

(1) Who was the first person to circumnavigate the world without stopping? Err, I'm not sure. Ferdinand Magellan?
(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne? Again, I'm just guessing. 1917?
(3) How many local authorities are there in London? God knows! Wild guess would be 12.
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I? Handel?
(5) What significant event took place in 1284? The signing of the Magna Carta?
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games? I think it's David something. I can't remember his surname, but he's a wheelchair athlete.

I probably got zero out of five! Will now consult Google! 😂

ThePhantomoftheEcobubbleOpera · 22/06/2025 12:16

Who decides these questions though? Shouldn't it be, it's summer, what should you take for a weekend trip? (Clothes to cover all four seasons) What is the first thing you do after learning bad news? (Least affected a person in the room makes a round of hot drinks with extra sugar)
Somebody is failing to queue properly, what do you do? (Tutt, shuffle up so they at least can't jump in front of you)
Etc, etc

Chersfrozenface · 22/06/2025 12:16

I got 2.

But I haven't read and digested the 'Official Guide for New Residents book
3rd edition'. If I had, I expect I'd have got a better score.

It's not even a test on general knowledge. It's a test on a book.

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 12:17

@Auburngal , I am very impressed. You win.

Yes, indeed. Can you answer them?

No none of them

DiscoBob · 22/06/2025 12:17

Q3 is 32. I just counted them in my head.

The others absolutely not a clue in the world. I'm presuming this is the 'life in the UK test'?

BlueyNeedsToFuckOff · 22/06/2025 12:17

Handel - Zadok the Priest is the most famous piece

I’d have said Messiah, particularly Hallelujah Chorus. I certainly think that the latter is performed more frequently these days.

KimberleyClark · 22/06/2025 12:17

  1. Francis Chichester
  2. Don't know
  3. Don't know and why should I?

  6. Don't know
DelphiniumBlue · 22/06/2025 12:17

(2) What date was the Battle of Boyne? No idea
(3) How many local authorities are there in London? 20 odd?
(4) Which composer composed music for George the I? Handel
(5) What significant event took place in 1284? Dunno
(6) Who is the paralympian who won six gold medals over two Paralympic Games? No idea, maybe Tanni Grey-Thompson?

1928

I got all the others wrong. Not sure why Magellan would feature as he wasn't British.

IceLollyMolly · 22/06/2025 12:18

I made a mistake. I omitted the word singlehandedly in Q 1. That makes a big difference.
