Would you go to Cyprus

Due to go to Cyprus mid August. Would you go? Seeing stuff on the news that is worrying me but no idea whether it’s just the media scaremongering.

Never going die to tarantula thread. Think that thread has damaged tourism there quite a bit. 😂

Pokemum76 · 18/06/2025 23:08

North or south?

xanthomelana · 18/06/2025 23:08

Yes I’d go. We were out there when France, USA and UK carried out air strikes on Syrian chemical weapon labs in 2018 and you wouldn’t even know anything was going on. My woeful knowledge of geography meant I didn’t realise how close the two countries actually are. If there’s any danger you won’t be allowed to fly anyway so the government must not consider it a risk at the moment.

No because of the tarantula thread here from the other night

Ha ha my thoughts.. OP I have a holiday booked in September and just watching as I can still get my money back until the end of July. I’m on the fence.

Going to Turkey in just under 3 weeks. Already nervous as it will be my first time abroad on my own with my children and I am a terrible flyer. Now this to worry about as well I wish I hadn’t opened this thread I thought my worries were irrational but seeing people saying they wouldn’t go is scaring me a lot.

Edited

I think it’s easy to say “I wouldn’t go” when you don’t have a holiday booked there. I guess if you were booking a holiday today some people may avoid Turkey due to the very small risk. Because there are plenty other destinations. But in reality the risk in Turkey tourist areas must be tiny. There will be 1000s of British tourist s going there in the next couple of months

Crazyworldmum · 18/06/2025 23:20

Off course . Cyprus has never been affected with any war in neighbouring countries .

ninjahamster · 18/06/2025 23:21

My daughter came back from Cyprus yesterday. No issues.

Mylittlepea · 18/06/2025 23:30

Cyprus is beautiful but I wouldn’t go again in August because it was 36-38 degrees everyday and I would melt into a sticky mess the moment I left our our air conditioned villa. My makeup slid off my face even in the evening when going out for dinner at 8pm.

I know you mean the location - concerns about war etc but thought would give you my lighthearted view🥵😉

AmelieSummer25 · 18/06/2025 23:30

My friends (adult) son is there at the moment for work (🙄🙄would love his 'job') he was at a (work- in finance) beach party last night. He has a great time, but he said it was 'weird' seeing the 'missiles' going over.

personally I couldn't enjoy a holiday there, like that, knowing people were being killed etc, seeing the missiles (or whatever) actually headed to kill people.

i know it's happening whether i go or not, but actually seeing it as you're sitting having a few drinks... no thanks.

It will be hot but I don’t mind it!

No, I wouldn’t go to Cyprus in August, but that applies to any year as 40 degree temperatures don’t appeal.

eurotravel · 19/06/2025 00:06

I’m going

Youlikepotatoesyes · 19/06/2025 00:13

I wouldn’t due to the heat.

And how are the missiles going “over” - surely Iran is in the opposite direction?

Trombelees · 19/06/2025 00:17

Until the FCO advises against it, I would go. Bad stuff can happen anywhere these days anyway.

Gattopardo · 19/06/2025 00:27

Cyprus would not be the first target for a depleted regime with many nearer targets, surely? There are the gulf states, Oman, Saudi, Iraq which are closer range. Plus Israel is not exactly on the flight path to Cyprus but it is not far off it, and it has a fairly formidable airborne defence system.

I’m relatively more worried about possible nuclear contamination events if the US does end up bombing Fordow, but which way that would impact would depend on the weather and wind, I’d imagine :(

Flux1 · 19/06/2025 00:37

A friend of mine is living in Cyprus with her family. While they know some families impacted by Israeli / Gaza conflict, they feel safe in Cyprus.

crumblingschools · 19/06/2025 00:45

If the bases on there are being used I assume they could become targets

NImumconfused · 19/06/2025 01:45

We're booked to go next week - slightly nervous about it (not helped by the tarantula thread!!) but we're going unless anything major happens between now and then.

TubeScreamer · 19/06/2025 06:41

no, primarily because of the temperatures

Pinkflower100 · 22/06/2025 21:30

We are going in a couple of weeks too. I think we have to go (or lose our money) unless it is officially deemed unsafe to go. I don’t think I’d be booking there now but must admit I’m a bit nervous. Part of me thinks it’ll be fine and why would Cyprus be targeted and another thinks what if the military base is targeted. We are heading to larnaca so off to google if it’s close by.

tallache1 · 23/06/2025 04:07

@Username12284949we’re in Turkey now with a small child and it’s absolutely fine, feel very safe so if I were you I would still come and not feel nervous. You’ll have a great time!

Mendip · 23/06/2025 11:26

Just come back. There was an obvious increased presence of U.S. military personnel building up a few days before we left. Nobody seemed unduly worried. But we were insulated somewhat in a large self contained resort. I would go if I was booked but I would book somewhere else if not committed.
