Would you go to Cyprus

Due to go to Cyprus mid August. Would you go? Seeing stuff on the news that is worrying me but no idea whether it’s just the media scaremongering.

It’s very, very likely to be fine, but it’s also very, very close to a potential war zone.

If I had an existing holiday booked, I’d probably go unless things got very significantly worse, but if I hadn’t already booked, I’d probably choose somewhere else this year.

Drangea · 18/06/2025 21:52

No because of the tarantula thread here from the other night

Almostalive · 18/06/2025 21:54

Same here. Just going to watch the travel information for now.

Largestlegocollectionever · 18/06/2025 21:55

Yes we’re going, not worried at all

strawlight · 18/06/2025 21:55

Yes definitely, unless the FCO advised against it, which is very unlikely.

It’s a beautiful country with lovely people and amazing food.

I ruled it out for this year's holiday, going to the Canaries instead. However the risks will be tiny and if I were already booked and paid I am sure I would still go.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 18/06/2025 21:58

Booked for September but can cancel up to a week before with no charge.

Waiting on booking flights tho.

Untery · 18/06/2025 21:59

What are the risks here that people are worried about? Would Turkey be in similar risks?

Moveoverdarlin · 18/06/2025 21:59

No.

Came on to say this

Wafflefinder · 18/06/2025 22:05

We’re in a similar position, due to go to Turkey in October and really unsure what to do. I think if it was closer and I’d paid the full balance I’d go, the FCO would stop people travelling if they thought it necessary.

3678194b · 18/06/2025 22:06

I would plan to go as normal. If it's a package like Tui they would cancel if any threat and offer a refund or new location.

Radiatorvalves · 18/06/2025 22:06

DS going this week. And we are going to Turkey. The news is stressful but unless FCO advice changes, we will be going.

It’s so difficult to predict how things will develop. That bloody turnip in the White House is making the world ever less safe.

sparrowflewdown · 18/06/2025 22:07

No to Cyprus and Turkey.

Elbowpatch · 18/06/2025 22:08

Yes.

I am going to Cyprus.

Where teenage girls get put in prison for being gang raped while the rapists get to go home?

Never and the day after never would I ever go there.

Ayia Napa Briton returns home after false rape claim sentence in Cyprus

Subbyhubby · 18/06/2025 22:16

I would go, but probably not take the kids

Pippa12 · 18/06/2025 22:19

I would go. The world is an increasingly turbulent place, if Cyprus/Turkey are attacked all hell will break loose regardless of where you are.

imcountingtothree123 · 18/06/2025 22:33

It’s not a package so flights and villa separate.

TimeForABreak4 · 18/06/2025 22:35

We are booked and will be going unless anything changes drastically before then.

DeathlyGreenAngel · 18/06/2025 22:44

I’m not sure why you wouldn’t go. An EU member state with two British bases on it is not getting drawn into Israel/Iran.

Cyprus is flipping great. It has been in a major dispute with Türkiye since 1974. You can’t see the manned checkpoints and border posts from most of the coastal results but they’re definitely there. Nobody stopped going when Cyprus was in an active conflict so I can’t imagine why they’d stop when it isn’t.

Username12284949 · 18/06/2025 22:48

Going to Turkey in just under 3 weeks. Already nervous as it will be my first time abroad on my own with my children and I am a terrible flyer. Now this to worry about as well I wish I hadn’t opened this thread I thought my worries were irrational but seeing people saying they wouldn’t go is scaring me a lot.

US and British planes are being sent from Cyprus based into the war, so those bases could easily become a target.

feistymama75 · 18/06/2025 23:05

My parents owned a house in Cyprus and we would spend a lot of time there when I was a child. I remember being a teenager swimming in the pool as the Gulf War got underway and seeing all the jets and naval ships going straight past.

Cyprus is in a very strategic position and some of the missiles fired between Israel and Iran were visible from Cyprus. A friend who lives there sent me a video the other day.

Personally I would wait a few more weeks and see what happens and then decide.
