Walking my cavapoo today in a big open and empty field. He trots along happily off the lead, if he comes across another dog he will go and give them a sniff and be on his way.

usually if I see another dog on a lead I will put him on a lead too. I didn’t see this woman soon enough as she appeared from behind a bush. Big gnarly dog on a lead XL bully type dog. My dogs starts trotting in her direction, she goes mental shouting “go away, this is a dangerous dog, get your fucking dig away” etc. I called Doggo over and put him on a lead, no drama. She is still mouthing off at me, to which I replied “all right calm down!” This set the mad woman off shouting that I’m a fucking idiot and her dog would rip mine to bits and I shouldn’t let him off the lead. To which I replied “you’re the one with the aggressive dog you can’t control, who is the real idiot here?” I then got called a butch and a c£&t!

Now is it me that is a c£&t? Or the person with a massive aggressive dog that was literally pulling her along??

I think it depends. Did you call your dog and it came straight back to you? Or was it getting close to the other dog by the time you called and it didn't come straight back but maybe had a little playful faff as dogs can and you had to call several times/ go up to the dog? Did your dog actually get very close to hers and she had to pull hers away to keep the distance?

She should be taking more precautions if the dog is the dog is very dangerous like a muzzle. However, I've seen other dog owners go, 'oh muffy is only playing' and having terrible recall putting a huge amount of pressure on a person trying to train a reactive dog.

If it was the former and your dog came straight back immediately then she was out of line. She's probably just had to deal with so many badly trained dogs with no recall she's on high alert and stressed. Not an excuse but there are so so so many shitty owners with untrained dogs.

YouHaveNotFuckedUp · 18/06/2025 20:55

PP with a lot of words.

It’s would be quicker to say the other woman was clearly a massive cunt.

EllyRoff · 18/06/2025 20:55

I wouldn’t go as far as to say you’re a cunt but you shouldn’t allow your dog to go up to other dogs. Mine would rip him up too unfortunately. Mine is obviously always on a lead and people with off lead dogs are the bane of my life

TheOriginalEmu · 18/06/2025 20:56

You shouldn’t be letting your dog go up and sniff other dogs without express permission from the owner.
she over reacted but she probably was worried hers would hurt yours and then she would be in trouble.
you’re not a cunt tho.

MyKingdomForACat · 18/06/2025 20:57

Only a cunt would have an XL bully type dog so…

Dogs off lead that go up to other dogs or people are a pain.

I’m not meaning to sound rude here, but why do you keep an aggressive dog? If it’s for security that makes some sense to me, but otherwyse aren’t they quite stressful to look after and make sure they’re not eating other people dogs? I mean what if a child ran up to yours or the mental woman’s dog? Would it rip them to bits?

You didn’t deserve to be sworn at but you shouldn’t let your dog go up to other dogs off lead full. I’m currently trying to train our puppy not to get crazy excited around other dogs while on lead walks and it drives me nuts when owners let theirs just bowl up for a sniff: But equally hers should be muzzled if it’s likely to attack and maul.

Yep, and anyone who walks an aggressive, reactive dog in a public place should have the dog muzzled.

Yeah I get this. As I said though, I usually put him on the lead when I see another dog on a lead. But the batshit woman just appeared!

Why do people have dogs that would rip up another dog? Would they do that to a child too? Surely they should be muzzled at the very least. But why have a dog like that? Kinder to PTS if they are so reactive

Shesellsseashellsnotinmystreet · 18/06/2025 21:02

We managed a dangerous ddog for years...imo the area around any ddog is their Personal Space.. Venture into it by invite only...
If she is regularly walking an xl bully unmuzzled ring the police. It's an offence..

I'm not entirely sure it was an xl bully, but that type of dog

Came to say same, I don’t understand why anyone would want a pet that would rip other dogs/cats/children “to pieces” at any opportunity. And if you do accidentally end up with a dog like that why are you taking it out to a public place without a muzzle? Or at all actually? The chance that something might go wrong would terrify me. I couldn’t rely just on the fact that it was on a lead - what if it pulled the leaf from my hands? Or another dog or a CHILD simply got too close?

CremeEggThief · 18/06/2025 21:05

She shouldn't have used that word towards you, but you shouldn't have told her to calm down either. That is the worst thing you can ever say to anyone obviously stressed and angry!

TheEllisGreyMethod · 18/06/2025 21:07

Aggressive dog for an aggressive idiot.

I wouldn't pay it much attention.
You called your dog back.

She shouldn't have it unmuzzled if she's that concerned.

Yeah I get this. As I said though, I usually put him on the lead when I see another dog on a lead. But the batshit woman just appeared!

People appear, from round corners or behind you or loads of situations. This 'batshit' woman had her dog on a lead and was in control of it, and she was probably fed up of other dogs 'having a sniff' of it.

God when I used to have a dog I used to hate other dogs running up to him as the owners watched on thinking it was cute. He didn't want sniffing, he wanted the other dog to fuck off but if he let them know that he'd be the one in trouble so he had to be ushered away. This happened so many times and by the end of a walk I was ready to get 'batshit' too

MyCyanReader · 18/06/2025 21:08

If your dog has recall then it's fine off lead.

But... if your dog got attacked because it approached another dog on a lead it would be you're fault.

You need to teach your dog not approached dogs at all though.

Maybe get a dog that isn’t aggressive and that you can control. Problem solved!

But it didn't calm the situation, did it? It escalated it. So you were wrong there. She was wrong in using the c word.

That’s ridiculous. Lots of people have XL bullies who are perfectly good people and owners. My cousin has two she rescued and they are wonderful dogs. You just have to be a sensible human being. The same as any dog.

Gloriia · 18/06/2025 21:09

She appeared from behind a bush?

Tbh I don't like other dogs coming up to ours, she's a lab so not vicious but she is nervous and when on a lead many feel threatened when other dogs approach them. So keep yours on a lead unless in a big open area like a field, a beach or if it doesn't go up to other dogs.

She overreacted but yours should have been on a lead or walking to heel.

GlamOrc · 18/06/2025 21:10

She's a cunt for having an XL bully, and swearing at a stranger in public.

You are not a cunt, but you are a bit silly. For general politeness and your own dogs safety you shouldn't be letting them approach other dogs without checking with the owner that they are not fearful, dog reactive or aggressive.

You could set adopted/traumatised dogs training back by months, and it would ultimately be your fault if your dog was attacked.
