Walking my cavapoo today in a big open and empty field. He trots along happily off the lead, if he comes across another dog he will go and give them a sniff and be on his way.

usually if I see another dog on a lead I will put him on a lead too. I didn’t see this woman soon enough as she appeared from behind a bush. Big gnarly dog on a lead XL bully type dog. My dogs starts trotting in her direction, she goes mental shouting “go away, this is a dangerous dog, get your fucking dig away” etc. I called Doggo over and put him on a lead, no drama. She is still mouthing off at me, to which I replied “all right calm down!” This set the mad woman off shouting that I’m a fucking idiot and her dog would rip mine to bits and I shouldn’t let him off the lead. To which I replied “you’re the one with the aggressive dog you can’t control, who is the real idiot here?” I then got called a butch and a c£&t!

Now is it me that is a c£&t? Or the person with a massive aggressive dog that was literally pulling her along??

Why was a dangerous dog not muzzled in a public place??

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:33

Literally above

XL bully and type are not the same thing

I think you need a grown up to come and help you with your reading. What are you on about??

It’s difficult when it’s an elderly dog and rescue. He is 13 and we got him two years ago but is small and still has loads of life in him. He came to us aggressive with dogs and unable to have a muzzle on for whatever reason, he just snaps. No idea if he was abused or what. I don’t know if a behaviourist would work at his age so we tend to walk him at night and he’s not allowed off the leash. For a younger dog or one you’ve raised from a pup who hasn’t been abused by all means see a behaviourist.

any XL bully type that an owner hasn’t muzzled needs reported, but it’s a case by case situation for other breeds.

It sounds like you’re doing sensible things in your case and presumably you would pick him up if an off leash dog approached. Not ideal of course but a safe solution.

yes he’s tiny so we are able to. If younger we’d definitely be seeking a behaviourist.

CactusSammy · 18/06/2025 21:35

No, it definately wasn't you that was the cunt in this scenario.

MrMucker · 18/06/2025 21:35

Not sure why you posted to ask if you were in the wrong, when you are super resistant to hearing your actual dog owning responsibilities.
I think you were very much in the wrong, you don't have a proper grasp of why to leash your dog and you have no notion of being preemptive. But you completely resist these things just for the sake of being right and "winning".
I'm sure your dog is lovely, if that helps.

EllyRoff · 18/06/2025 20:55

I wouldn’t go as far as to say you’re a cunt but you shouldn’t allow your dog to go up to other dogs. Mine would rip him up too unfortunately. Mine is obviously always on a lead and people with off lead dogs are the bane of my life

Think your dog needs a muzzle then.

TooBored1 · 18/06/2025 21:35

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:01

Yeah I get this. As I said though, I usually put him on the lead when I see another dog on a lead. But the batshit woman just appeared!

Then train your dog not to go up to other dogs.

Hmm but why should other people keep their gentle dogs on leads to accommodate your dog that you can't control? Next you'll be asking for kids on leads.

Obviously you haven’t read the full thread. I have taken responsibility and said I would be in the wrong if my dog was attacked. Hope that helps.

if your dog goes up to other dogs then you need to keep it on a lead.

the other woman's language was bad but she's pissed off at other dog owners letting their dogs off leads going up to anyone and everyone.

what happens if your dog goes up to a child? not everyone loves dogs. If your dog doesn't do what you say, when you say it, then don't let it off the lead

YaWeeFurryBastard · 18/06/2025 21:38

I honestly find some of the comments astounding, what if it was a small child who we all know can run up to dogs in a split second even with attentive parents. Cue the “my dog aggressive dog would never bite a child” comments. Well no, your dog has been shown to be aggressive so muzzle it in public, why take the risk? A child’s life is more important than your dog’s walking enjoyment and I say that as a committed dog owner.

My reading’s fine thankyou.

The quote thing didn’t work and I cannot be arsed to screenshot it.

but it’s about your 7th reply where you say

not sure it was an XL bully but that type.

If you cannot call your dog back so it doesn’t approach other dogs on lead until you’ve established that it’s fine then you are a cock juggling thundercunt.

MyCyanReader · 18/06/2025 21:38

YaWeeFurryBastard · 18/06/2025 21:25

A dog isn’t “under control” if it’s going to attack anything that approaches.

Why would anything be approaching it?

I have 2 dogs. They do NOT approach other dogs! Not unless I have checked its OK with the owner.

No one (people, dogs) should approach people's dogs without checking its OK first.

Aggressive dogs are not going to be aggressive if they're not provoked. Their owners therefore keep them on a lead.

zaicandy · 18/06/2025 21:39

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:36

No it wasn’t muzzled

Report to dog warden then. I had to do similar for a bully XL type dog near my local library and on the bus with me. link

Controlling your dog in public

You can be fined if your dog is out of control in public - find out about Dog Control Orders, banned dogs, dog fouling and reporting a dangerous dog

Flyswats · 18/06/2025 21:39

Why were you confrontational? She shouted at you. I would have just walked on. There's no reasoning with people when they are like that and there's no benefit to shouting back. You will never feel better about it, only worse.

She is for her behaviour BUT, I have a Lhasa Apso that's been attacked by 2 other dogs. She hates dogs now and goes in defence mode when she sees one. I absolutely hate when another dog approaches off lead although I never act like that.

MangoBlink · 18/06/2025 21:39

Your the problem I'm afraid. You openly say in your OP that yours will happily go and sniff another dog before going on it's way.
Who are you to decide that's okay?
Some dogs don't like it, some are reactive to strange dogs approaching them.
I have a Dax, he'd attack yours if he came for a friendly sniff because he's nervous through mistreatment from a previous owner. He's on his lead.
He's not a big scary aggressive XL type
I'd shout at you aswell to get your dog on the lead because mine is scared.
Your dog doesn't have the right of way because it's a friendly sniff.
Train your dog to walk on without approaching other dogs and be more aware of your surroundings

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:40

SuperTrooper14 · 18/06/2025 21:37

Now I'm starting to think that other owner had a point. Rude much?

Right then, to clear this up…

I said an xl bully type dog - as in a dog that looked like an xl bully but not completely sure on exact breed.

then someone mentioned xl bullies should be muzzled etc, I replied that I wasn’t sure that it actually was an xl bully.

I hope that helps you to understand.

If you can’t stop your dog approaching other dogs (or people) then you can’t control your dog either, no matter how gentle it is.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 18/06/2025 21:21

I’ve got an ABD x who is big but not XL bully so no need to muzzle

Her recall is shit so she’s never off lead.

To date she has been bitten by 6 ‘friendly’ cavapoos and 3 labs.

she’s never reacted to them at all, because of this I will ask people to keep their dogs back. It’s not fair that mine gets set upon

Unless you can keep your dog to heel at will and only let them approach dogs once you know it ok then you are being a bit unreasonable.

You’ve also stated XL bully in your OP then back tracked. Just because you think your dog is ok it doesn’t make it ok.

I've worked with dogs for many years and I'd bet that your pup was attacked by cockapoos rather than cavapoos.

The most troublesome and unpredictable breed I've ever worked with and vet colleagues agree, are cockapoos. So much depends on the genetic ratio and unfortunately you don't know what mix you've got until it's too late. They can be aggressive little so and so's and very unpredictable.

Plantladylover · 18/06/2025 21:40

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:10

Yes I agree, it would have been my fault. However, should people be allowed to walk around in public with a massive aggressive dog that poses a risk to other dogs and maybe people?

you shouldn't be walkign around in public with your dog off a lead which runs up to other dogs/people/children etc

do you not see that.

just cos you love little fido doesn't mean the rest of the world want him slobbering him over us
