Walking my cavapoo today in a big open and empty field. He trots along happily off the lead, if he comes across another dog he will go and give them a sniff and be on his way.

usually if I see another dog on a lead I will put him on a lead too. I didn’t see this woman soon enough as she appeared from behind a bush. Big gnarly dog on a lead XL bully type dog. My dogs starts trotting in her direction, she goes mental shouting “go away, this is a dangerous dog, get your fucking dig away” etc. I called Doggo over and put him on a lead, no drama. She is still mouthing off at me, to which I replied “all right calm down!” This set the mad woman off shouting that I’m a fucking idiot and her dog would rip mine to bits and I shouldn’t let him off the lead. To which I replied “you’re the one with the aggressive dog you can’t control, who is the real idiot here?” I then got called a butch and a c£&t!

Now is it me that is a c£&t? Or the person with a massive aggressive dog that was literally pulling her along??

You’re both right.
You’re both wrong.

If your dog has recall then it's fine off lead.

But... if your dog got attacked because it approached another dog on a lead it would be you're fault.

You need to teach your dog not approached dogs at all though.

Yes I agree, it would have been my fault. However, should people be allowed to walk around in public with a massive aggressive dog that poses a risk to other dogs and maybe people?

Maybe get a dog that isn’t aggressive and that you can control. Problem solved!

Maybe keep your dog on a lead so it doesn’t bother other dog walkers? Problem solved!

She's a cunt for having an XL bully, and swearing at a stranger in public.

You are not a cunt, but you are a bit silly. For general politeness and your own dogs safety you shouldn't be letting them approach other dogs without checking with the owner that they are not fearful, dog reactive or aggressive.

You could set adopted/traumatised dogs training back by months, and it would ultimately be your fault if your dog was attacked.

Once again, as stated in my OP, I wouldn’t normally let him approach a dog on a lead

if she owns a dog that’s likely to rip another animal apart, she should have it muzzled. Or better still, keep it away from public places. But don’t know why anyone would want a dog like that.

Not a dog owner, but don’t know why pps are so up in arms about a dog approaching another? It’s a cavapoo- am guessing it’s a friendly dog.

I see dogs regularly approaching others in the park. I thought that was a positive thing for most dogs to socialise with other dogs? Lots of dog owners seem perfectly fine with it. And as long as the dog obeys commands to come back to owner, what’s the problem?

She was in control of it. It was your dog that was 'trotting over to it' 🙄 she had it under control on a lead

Fahdidahlia · 18/06/2025 21:12

As an aside - Fields often have livestock on rotation in them. Walkers should only be on the designated paths through the field and so should their dogs. Dogs off leads are the bane of my life as owners often don't see everything their precious pooch is doing, including them leaving poos which can (and have in our case) killed some of our calves prior to birth. I'm a dog owner and my dog is always on a lead unless he is in my own garden. Want your dog off a lead go to designated dog fields.

Well I’m more inclined to think that if morons weren’t allowed to have dangerous dogs the problem really would be solved wouldn't it

I wouldn’t go as far as to say you’re a cunt but you shouldn’t allow your dog to go up to other dogs. Mine would rip him up too unfortunately. Mine is obviously always on a lead and people with off lead dogs are the bane of my life

This - I've just managed to get my dog's reactiveness down to so he's now good at giving a warning growl rather than going ape shit like he used to, but if pushed (e.g. the other day when he was flanked by two off lead golden retrievers, one just ran straight to sniff his bum) he will go ape shit, and put my training back a few weeks.

Yes so you were in thr wrong. Always keep it on a lead unless you can see well ahead that no one is coming.
She was rude, probably nervous. Many dog owners don't want annoying dogs trotting over.

I wouldn’t say she was in control of it, it was dragging her along and she was screaming. Time to rethink owning a dangerous dog do you think?

My dog was attacked by an offlead dog 3 years ago. Since then he is dog aggressive. Should I not be allowed to keep him because of other people’s idiotic behaviour?

But my dog isn't dangerous she just doesn't like been approached when she is on a lead? It is very common they feel threatened if another dog is allowed to bother them.

Dog aggressive doesn’t mean kid aggressive ffs.

BeachPebbleWave · 18/06/2025 21:16

Her screaming and swearing will do her aggressive dog no favours at all. They literally take their cues from their owners.

I frequently have similar OP - have a dog off lead with good recall who goes back on lead when any unknown dogs approach. Here we have a woman with four/five dogs (was 5, then 4, now seems to have another) she can’t control. She hides them in bushes so they can’t see us and so might pull her over/be aggressive.

The problem with this method is often we (and many other local dog walkers) don’t see her skulking about in bushes. She then screams blue murder at us to get our dogs under control or her dogs will rip ours to shreds. My dog is very bemused/worried by the screamy woman and if he senses her before we do tries to put himself back on the lead!

We are a rural community with a lot of dog walkers and there is a lot of friendship amongst dog owners - even those with less sociable dogs.

I feel quite sorry for her really as she’s so stuck on rescuing dogs that she is quite isolated and her dogs don’t look like they are getting the best deal either.

Not dangerous unless bothered by another dog

Why on earth would you have a dog that will rip another animal (or child) to shreds if it gets the chance, and you can’t control whether they come up to you.

And as for a nervous owner. Give me strength.

Still not dangerous she just doesn't like it. Keep yours on a lead.
