Walking my cavapoo today in a big open and empty field. He trots along happily off the lead, if he comes across another dog he will go and give them a sniff and be on his way.

usually if I see another dog on a lead I will put him on a lead too. I didn’t see this woman soon enough as she appeared from behind a bush. Big gnarly dog on a lead XL bully type dog. My dogs starts trotting in her direction, she goes mental shouting “go away, this is a dangerous dog, get your fucking dig away” etc. I called Doggo over and put him on a lead, no drama. She is still mouthing off at me, to which I replied “all right calm down!” This set the mad woman off shouting that I’m a fucking idiot and her dog would rip mine to bits and I shouldn’t let him off the lead. To which I replied “you’re the one with the aggressive dog you can’t control, who is the real idiot here?” I then got called a butch and a c£&t!

Now is it me that is a c£&t? Or the person with a massive aggressive dog that was literally pulling her along??

Clearly next time she should just let the little doggo trot over then and give no warning 🙄

zaicandy · 18/06/2025 21:18

You should’ve ran over to dog to get him, not relied on him coming back when called. I hope her dog was muzzled or I’d be reporting her.

EllyRoff · 18/06/2025 21:18

GuevarasBeret · 18/06/2025 21:16

Why on earth would you have a dog that will rip another animal (or child) to shreds if it gets the chance, and you can’t control whether they come up to you.

And as for a nervous owner. Give me strength.

Well if I could have chosen for my dog to have NOT been attacked by an offlead dog I would have done, obviously 🙄 unfortunately some idiots think their dogs need to be off lead so they can “say hello” to other dogs.

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:07

Well she needed to calm down so I told her!

Well she thought you were a C* so she told you.

Anyone who has a dog which would rip other dogs/animals/people to bits are dangerous morons.

Dogs aren’t born like this.

YaWeeFurryBastard · 18/06/2025 21:18

I agree with you OP, if you have an aggressive dog it should be muzzled in public at all times. No, your dog shouldn’t have approached her dog but accidents happen and what if it had been a child?

You’d have to be really thick or entitled to walk a knowingly aggressive dog in public with no muzzle but some people seem to actively enjoy it, e.g. the “mine would rip yours to shred” comment. If your dog can’t cope with a quick sniff from another dog without attacking then no way should it be unmuzzled where children could be.

SuperTrooper14 · 18/06/2025 21:19

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:14

I wouldn’t say she was in control of it, it was dragging her along and she was screaming. Time to rethink owning a dangerous dog do you think?

Hang on, isn't it likely her dog was pulling manically as a reaction to yours "trotting up" to it? Mine pulls when an off-lead dog approaches and she's not aggressive, she's just excited, but to look at her you might think otherwise as she's a big dog.

GlamOrc · 18/06/2025 21:19

Not a dog owner, but don’t know why pps are so up in arms about a dog approaching another? It’s a cavapoo- am guessing it’s a friendly dog.

Not necessarily no.

A very experienced dog owner walks her rescue dog in the local park next to us. She adopted him young but he had come from a dog fighting camp so God know what he witnessed as a very young puppy. He was terrified of all other dogs, especially small ones. He is generally a happy and calm dog, except if another strange dog suddenly gets into his space. He would snap and growl out of terror.

His owner explained at one point why he had a regress when some tit's let their 'friendly' dog run and 'playfully' jump on him. Luckily he is much better now (and we seem to mainly have sensible owners walking there lately) and will even want to greet my chihuahua on a good day.

Screamingabdabz · 18/06/2025 21:19

I think you both are. Dog owners who don’t control their dogs. And dipshits who own horror movie dogs.

CorbyTrouserPress · 18/06/2025 21:19

What’s the point of this thread? You clearly believe you and your dog did nothing wrong so why ask?

Eminybob · 18/06/2025 21:19

Anyone who owns a dog that they admit will rip another dog to bits is a massive cunt.

Iwrotethelyricstoaxlf · 18/06/2025 21:21

I’ve got an ABD x who is big but not XL bully so no need to muzzle

Her recall is shit so she’s never off lead.

To date she has been bitten by 6 ‘friendly’ cavapoos and 3 labs.

she’s never reacted to them at all, because of this I will ask people to keep their dogs back. It’s not fair that mine gets set upon

Unless you can keep your dog to heel at will and only let them approach dogs once you know it ok then you are being a bit unreasonable.

You’ve also stated XL bully in your OP then back tracked. Just because you think your dog is ok it doesn’t make it ok.

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:21

EllyRoff · 18/06/2025 21:14

My dog was attacked by an offlead dog 3 years ago. Since then he is dog aggressive. Should I not be allowed to keep him because of other people’s idiotic behaviour?

Not if it’s dangerous, no.

Gloriia · 18/06/2025 21:21

We have a narrow path near us, leading to a massive field and an even more massive beach, the amount of 'morons'<seems to be the fashionable word> who let their dogs walk off lead down the narrow path sniffing and bothering every other dog walking on a lead is absolutely ridiculous.

Take the lead off when you're in a big open space not when in close distances to other more responsible owners.

How have I back tracked? I said “an xl bully type dog” maybe read the post properly before you make judgy comments

Mine is the same. He’s a Lhasa apso not a bully XL. He himself nearly got ripped to shreds and it means he gets aggressive with other dogs. We keep him on the leash. Does this mean we should get rid of him too?

absolute spanner 🙄

bully.

so why say that.

If you think it may be a banned bread and it wasn’t wearing a muzzle you can report it to the dog warden

Gloriia · 18/06/2025 21:23

This. Train your dog op.

cantthinkofausername26 · 18/06/2025 21:10

Yes I agree, it would have been my fault. However, should people be allowed to walk around in public with a massive aggressive dog that poses a risk to other dogs and maybe people?

Yes. Their dog was not a risk as it was on a lead and under control.

It's not their fault if people allow their dog to approach without asking if its OK.

Whippetrealgood · 18/06/2025 21:24

It's not just aggressive dogs though. My dog was attacked as a puppy and is terrified of other dogs. It really makes him anxious if they approach, and he'd panic. We've been working on it and progress is slow, because of regular set backs like this.

It's easy to be judgemental but sometimes all it takes is for your dog to be on the receiving end of the attack and then you've got a reactive dog too.

She shouldn't have screamed at you though, accidents happen and if the dog is that aggressive it's not safe to be in public, on lead or not.

zaicandy · 18/06/2025 21:24

MyCyanReader · 18/06/2025 21:24

If it was a bully XL or banned breed it should have been muzzled, otherwise I agree. OP’s fault.

SparrowFeet · 18/06/2025 21:25

Not everyone actually purchases an aggressive dog. Sometimes dogs become aggressive by being repeatedly bothered by other dogs / people or by a frightening experience.
Yes that women may have owned a stereotypically aggressive dog but if you can't see around a corner and your dog isn't checking in with you then you should be training it do so. That way you can avoid someone surprising you with an XL bully or an aggressive cockerpoo.

Yes you should get rid of him apparently because other irresponsible dog owners let their dogs trot about bothering other dogs Confused.
