I thought there were fine plans to bin this nonsense

So sick of having to plan around it and buy overpriced extra stuff I don't need

It has been consistent over the years and the same for all regardless of who you fly with.

Unlike cabin baggage sizes.

DS is flying out shortly to a European city and is just packing a toothbrush. He will get to a local supermarket and buy toiletries when he gets there. Saves all the faff.

You were wanted to travel with three months' worth of all your toiletries? In hand luggage?

Shops may be available in other countries.

Six inhalers and a Bristol Airport plastic bag would be bulging at the seams. Apparently, we asthmatics shouldn’t be allowed to breathe, wash and wear make-up on our travels!

RaraRachael · 18/06/2025 19:08

So annoying when one of your airports still does 100ml and the other doesn't

Anything with a medical prescription is exempt from both the 100ml-per-container rule and the 1-litre-in-total rule.

Was going to say this. I travel with a 300ml bottle of medication and never had a problem. They need to have the prescription label on it. I carry a print out of my repeat prescription and also a letter from my consultant. I’ve been asked for ID to check that the label matches my passport.

Valeriekat · 18/06/2025 19:21

Haven't they already done it in many airports?

Got caught out with this bringing a fancy jar or marmalade as a gift for a friend.

Have also been pulled up because of dregs of water in the bottom of my water bottle.

Last time we travelled, I was super careful. Bag got pulled out again and they spent ages going through every single item. Turned out to be because the wing of my son's toy plane showed up on the scanner looking like a knife. You can't win.

You don't need to put anything in separate plastic bags at Bristol

Chocolatefreak · 18/06/2025 20:28

Just decant things into smaller containers. Take an empty water bottle and fill it at the drinking water fountains once you're past security. Saves on plastic waste. As you said yourself - just organise your way out of this - it's really not difficult.

It wasn’t in the clear bag, correct, because I didn’t know then that it was classed as a liquid. It was in my tote bag inside my makeup bag with the rest of my (dry) makeup. The detector sent it down the Naughty Track and the security guy went through my bag and discovered my contraband. I tried to let him put it in my little liquids bag (yes there was room) and he refused 🤷🏼‍♀️

Which airport was this? I've taken lipstick and stick lipbalm through many airports as a solid (in a separate bag from liquids). Sounds like you might just have been unlucky with the security person.

Hmm well £80 for a round trip isn't cheap either way is it? Then there's the unnecessary fannying around to collect a bag I don't need. The fact that they can't organise their way out of this is I think indicative of the world just being a bit shit.

Order a click and collect to the boots in the airport, of which there is genuinely one in every airport in the UK...

you pay normal price, or just check in a bag like any sane person would

Liquids include gels and pastes.

Also remember the liquid restriction applies to staff working past security. So unable to take a pot of yoghurt with their packed lunch

A friend is a pilot, he says he's had security on the staff security section poke suspiciously at his leftover home made curry in his lunch and make noises about it being too liquidy. Not to put too fine a point on it, if the pilot wanted the plane not to arrive, he wouldn't need to faff about with liquids hidden in a Tupperware of curry.

Genuine lol at this

That’s good to hear! Every flight I’ve taken from Bristol over the last five years has had different security requirements. In May last year, it was electronics left in bags, but a maximum of one free plastic bag per person in the tray for all medication and toiletries 😬

I have too, I’ve just randomly checked Manchester Airport’s security page and it says this:

Please note: Lipsticks, lip balms, and stick deodorants are not classed as liquids, so you don’t need to put these in your clear plastic bag.

Any sane person? You don’t have to check in a bag you know . Depends on why you are travelling, how much luggage you have, if you get charged extra etc.

HuskyNew · 18/06/2025 22:43

MauriceTheMussel · 18/06/2025 16:36

And even when they did work, no guarantee the airport you’d fly back from would be the same!

This!!
I flew out on 2 flights no problems. Don’t even have to take liquids out of backpack.
Coming back and the first airport decides I have too many to fit in one trip by zip lock bag and confiscates them! Inconsistency is annoying

I flew in April.this year and all liquids are kept in your hand luggage and no limit on how many bottles you can take up to 100ml. It says this on their website

Birmingham. I’ve put it in the clear bag since but I agree I got unlucky, never had it happen before.

Ah, I've been through many airports but never Birmingham. Maybe they have different rules or you got a new / eager security person but sounds unreasonable to not allow you to then move it to your liquids bag though, even if it meant going back through scanning. I'd be gutted to have thrown a favourite item!

There isn't a Boots at Southampton airport. I don't think there's one at Exeter either. So not every airport in the UK.

dynamiccactus · 24/06/2025 16:52

I've taken lip balm separately every time I've flown. First of all it was inadvertent, and then when I realised they didn't care, I always put one in my bag and not the plastic bag. Might have to be careful about that in future!

Lol at the idea it's this strategic

LOL at the idea that it isn't. It absolutely is - different airports have different policies - and day to day. So one day you might need to take your shoes off. Another day you don't.

The liquids thing isn't strategic and that's because the machines were supposed to do away with all this hassle and then they (UK and EU authorities) decided they weren't working properly and changed the rules again. And then some airports don't have the machines yet,
